METHOD STATEMENT FOR DETERMINATION OF TENSILE ADHESION STRENGTH


FOR CEMENTITIOUS ADHESIVES

1. SCOPE
This work procedure for the method under laboratory temperature and humidity conditions to determine the
Tensile adhesion strength of cementitious ceramic tile adhesives.

2.REFERENCES
• Standard: BS EN 12004 (BS EN 1348)

3. RESOURCES
• Ceramic tiles with facial dimensions of (50 ± 1) mm x (50 ± 1) mm.
• The concrete slab shall comply with EN 1323
• Mass capable of exerting a force of (20 ± 0,05) N,
• Square metallic plates 50 ± 1 mm x 50 ± 1 mm x thickness of 10 mm
• Tensile testing machine (Proceq)
• Notched trowel having 6mm x 6mm notches at 12mm centres.

4. TEST CONDITIONS
Standard conditions shall be (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity and a speed of air in the testing
area ·of less than 0,2 m/s.

5. MIXING OF THE ADHESIVE


Minimum quantity of 2 kg of the adhesive shall be prepared in a mixer of the type described in 4.4 of EN 196-
1:2005, using the slow speed settings (140 ± 5) r/min and (62 ± 5) r/min planetary movement.

6.PROCEDURE

Pfeparation of test units

. Will apply a thin layer of the adhesive to the concrete slab with a straight edge trowel,
o Then apply a thicker layer and comb with a notched trowel,
o The trowel shall be held at an angle of approximately 60' to the substrate at a right angle to one
edge of the slab and drawn across the slab parallel to that edge (in a straight line).
o After 5 min place tiles on the adhesive at a distance apart of 50 mm and load each tile with (2010,05)
N for 30 s,

6.1 A.DHESION STRENGT,H

o After 27 days of storage under standard conditions, attach the pull-head plates to the tiles with a
suitable high strength adhesive,
. Determine the tensile adhesion shength of the adhesive by applying force at a constant rate of (250
+ 50) N/s after 24 hours of further storage under standard conditions.
. Report results in Newton,
