Listen up! Here's how you represent

A decimal as a percent
Move the decimal point two places right;
Then write a percent sign

A decimal is a fraction whose denominator

is a power of ten
A percent is a portion (student will watch)
out of one hundred

And the workload is minimal to convert

A percent to a decimal
The decimal point moves left two places;
then percent sign erases.

2. Reviewing previous lesson

Let’s have a review on our previous lesson. Get a

piece of paper and let’s have a review.

Mengie’s flower shop has five (5) varieties of

flowers. Her shop has 350 flowers in all. The pie
graph on the right shows the percent of flowers in
each variety. How many percent of flowers are
tulips? How many are the tulip flowers?

1. How many roses are there? There are 105 pieces of roses.

Yes you are right! The pie graph shows that 30% of
the 350 flowers of Mengie in her flower shop are
roses. Let N = the number of pieces of roses 30% of
350 = N 0.30 x 350 = N N = 105. So, there are 105
pieces of
roses.

Yes, you are right! The pie graph shows that 30% of
the 350 flowers of Mengie in her flower shop are
roses. Let N = the number of pieces of roses 30% of
350 = N 0.30 x 350 = N N = 105, so, there are 140
pieces of orchids and anthurium.

3. How many pieces are carnation flowers? There are 49 pieces of carnation flowers.

Yes, you are right! The graph shows that 14% of

flowers at Mengie’s flower shop are carnations. Let
N = the number of pieces of carnation flowers. 14%
of 350 = N 0.14 x 350 = N N = 49 Therefore, there
are 49 pieces of carnation flowers.

Therefore, there are 49 pieces of carnation flowers.

How do you again compute a number through using Convert the percent to decimal and multiply it to a

Very good! You’ve done well.

Likely, unlikely, impossible and certain are words

we used to describe an event.

Are you ready to describe an event? Yes ma’am!

B. Presenting the lesson

Let’s start our lesson!

The weather forecaster says that there is a 75%

chance of rain today. Does it mean that there is a
great chance that it will rain today? Is it

likely
unlikely
impossible
certain…

…will it rain today? Explain your answer. Yes ma’am. It will rain today, because the chances
are high.
To answer the question above, we need to know the
concept of probability. The chance that it will rain
today is 75%. Using the number line ranging from 0
to 1, we can locate 75%.

Based on the number line, we can say that the event

that it will rain today is likely to happen because
the number is closer to 1 or 100%.

The chance that something will happen is called

probability. Probability is used to describe how
likely or unlikely something will happen.
Probability may be given in fraction, decimal, or
percent.

What do we call the chance that something will Probability ma’am!

happen?

In what wat probability can be presented? It can be presented through fraction, decimal or
percent.

The value of probability ranges from 0 to 1 (0

means the event is impossible to happen, while 1 or
100% means the event is certain to happen).

If the probability is 1, what is the probability of an Certain.

event?

An event that is most likely to happen has the

probability between 0.5 and 1, however, it is very
difficult to exactly measure the certainty of that
event unless the probability is 0 (it will never
happen) or 1 (it will surely happen).”

If the probability ranges between 0.5 and 1, what is It is most likely to happen ma’am.
the probability of an event?

The closer its probability to 1, the more likely an

event will happen. The event is most unlikely to
happen when its probability is between 0 to 0.5.
like winning a jackpot in a lottery where you only
have one time in a million chances of winning. The
closer the probability of an event to 0, the most
unlikely an event will happen.

If the probability ranges between 0 to 0.5, what is It is most unlikely to happpen

the probability of an event?

Now, Let’s look at the spinners. Tell “certain”,

“most likely”, as “likely as unlikely”, “most
unlikely”, or “impossible” to describe the
probability of landing on the shaded part of the
spinner.

Are you ready? Yes, ma’am!

Let’s get started!

1. There are 2 shaded parts out of 4 parts in the likely as unlikely

spinner (2/4 or 50%)

Yes, you are right! it is likely as unlikely.

2. There NO shaded parts in 3 parts of the impossible

spinner (0/3 or 0%)

Yes, you are right! it is impossible.

3. There are 1 shaded parts out of 3 parts in the

spinner (1/3 or 33%) most unlikely

Yes, you are right! it is most unlikely.

4. There are 4 shaded parts out of 6 parts in the

spinner (4/6 or 66%) most likely

Yes, you are right! it is most likely.

5. There are 6 shaded parts out of 6 parts in the

spinner (6/6 or 100%) certain

Yes, you are right! it is certain.

2. Practice exercise

you have a partner now? Yes ma’am

Answer the following questions. Use impossible,

most unlikely, as likely as unlikely, most likely, or
certain to describe each statement.

1. What is the probability that you will get wet by

standing under heavy rain without a raincoat or an
umbrella? Certain

The answer is “certain”. You will definitely get we

if you stand under a heavy rain without a raincoat!

2. What is the probability that you will pick an ace of

hearts from a deck of cards? Most unlikely

A deck of card has 54 cards and has 4 aces. It is

most unlikely that you will get an ace.

3. What is the probability of getting the jackpot in a Most unlikely

lottery?
You can still win on a lottery, but it would be most
likely because there are a billion ways numbers can
be combined and there is only one combination of
numbers that will one in the lottery.

4. What is the probability that you will see a rainbow Most unlikely
on a summer sunny day?

Rainbows usually appear after raining. The chance

of raining on summer day is most unlikely.

5. What is the probability that a turtle will grow Impossible

wings and fly?

Well, that’s pretty obvious.

6. What is the probability that the sun will rise Certain

tomorrow?
Yas, you are right!

7. What is the probability that the sun will go down Certain

tomorrow?

Yas, you are right!

8. What is the probability that the fish can walk? Impossible

9. Observe the spinner below. What is the probability

of the spinner landing on a planet other than Jupiter? Most likely

Yas, it is most likely.

10. There are 1 yellow, 2 blue, and 2 green cubes in

a box. Without looking, what is the likelihood of Most unlikely
picking a yellow cube out of the box?

Yas, it is most unlikely.

Wow! It seems like you really learn how to describe

a probability!

Life is a game of probability. We are not always

sure of things. We are not always sure if the sun
will shine tomorrow. So we better be prepared to
bring an umbrella with us. We are not always sure if
things will still be good tomorrow. What if you get
in an accident later? What if a war sparks
tomorrow? That is why, we better be prepared for
everything. We should always be ready.

Why do you think we should always be ready for We should always be ready for tomorrow,
tomorrow? because we are not always certain of all things.

Yes, you are right!

3. Generalization
The probability line can be used to predict and
describe the possibility of an event to happen or not
to happen. Words such as certain, most likely, as
likely as unlikely, most unlikely, and impossible
can be used as expressions to describe the chance of
an event to happen. It is the number that we use to
describe and express that likelihood.

The event is most __________to happen when its The event is most unlikely to happen when its
probability is closer to 0 – 0.5. probability is closer to 0 – 0.5.

The event is ________________ if its probability is The event is most likely to happen if its
between 0.5 and 1. probability is between 0.5 and 1.

The probability of an event can be described as The probability of an event can be described as
“___________________” when the chance of it to “as likely as unlikely” when the chance of it to
happen is the same as the chance that it will not happen is the same as the chance that it will not
occur. Its probability is 0.50 or 50%. occur. Its probability is 0.50 or 50%.

An event that is _______will surely happen. Its An event that is certain will surely happen. Its
probability is equal to 1 or 100%. probability is equal to 1 or 100%.

An _________event cannot happen. Its probability An impossible event cannot happen. Its
is 0 or 0%. probability is 0 or 0%.
