The Principles of Coaching

Introduction

As a leader, knowing yourself is a key component to effectively leading on a larger

scale. Alignment of personal values and goals with the values and goals of an organization is

important in establishing a positive organizational culture. Assessment of the current

attributes and capabilities of a leader can be effectively done through the creation of a

leadership growth plan.

My Values

Family. Family is important to me because it represents strength and togetherness. Through

family one can find a motivating factor of the strongest caliber. In most cases, family brings

out the best in us all. For me, the word family equates to unconditional love.

Trust. Trust is important because it is the ground foundation for any and all civil

relationships. Without trust it is extremely difficulty to have faith in anyone to do the right

things under the most challenging circumstances/conditions. Trust and rapport are

particularly important in the coaching process. It is very difficult for some people to bestow

trust upon someone else.

Commitment. Making a commitment to accomplish something means that you will put your

all in to make it happen, despite challenges and obstacles. With commitment comes resiliency

and perseverance. When one is committed the word quit does not exist.

Integrity. Integrity is important to me because it is a byproduct of truthfulness and honesty,

which are two of the most important qualities in a leader. Integrity is telling the truth even

when the outcome will not be favorable.

Work Life Balance: In the busy world of today, work life balance is extremely important. A

healthy work balance is important to maintaining normalcy in today’s extremely busy world.

It also reduces stress and prevents burnout.

Leadership Style

My leadership style is the delegating style, which I developed during my time in the

U.S. Army. The chain of command is the hierarchy of leadership for a military command.

Each layer of leadership and responsibility is delegated throughout the chain of command at

different levels for certain functions. To achieve performance beyond expectations, you have

to empower your subordinates and allow the to make decision. When delegating, you still

have to make sure assigned actions are completed. While delegation of responsibility is

common, accountability is not. As a delegating style leader, the aforementioned fact is

something that the U.S. Army prepared me for. A good leadership assessment is currently

Motivation

Doing a good job. Having an exceptionally high amount of pride in a finished product is

extremely motivating, especially when it is something that helps other, or you receive

positive recognition from a superior for your exceptional hard work. The need for external

gratification is not always necessary; the desire to do a good job should be in everyone.

Winning. The positive feeling that you get from winning is euphoric and highly motivating

to increase the desire to continue winning. Not to forsake having good sportsmanship, but

second place is the best loser.

Helping others. Helping others is motivating because of the positive feeling that is received

from doing a good deep that benefits someone else other than you. Volunteering at a local

homeless shelter or an orphanage is a fantastic example of something that is helpful to others

and motivating at the same time to keep helping. Church is also a good example of a place

where you can help others.

Family. Family is very motivating to bring out the best in anyone. When you put your

family and the best for them at the forefront of your mind you will achieve an unparalleled

level of motivation to succeed in order to make things better for them and to provide all the

opportunities for them to be successful in life. This holds especially true for people who have

children.

Monetary Compensation. Money isn’t everything, but it makes things easier. Motivation for

monetary compensation is necessary in order to provide for well being and a certain level of

comfort of todays world.

Competencies

Developing Subordinates. I feel very capable and competent in this area. My experiences as

a leader in the U.S. Army gave me extensive leadership training and practical experience.

My crowing leadership achievement was deploying to Iraq as a platoon sergeant and bringing

all my Soldiers back home to their families alive. Mentorship and frequent evaluation of the

Soldiers under my charge was required to accomplish bringing everyone home. I had to set

the tone for my subordinate leaders to foster a culture of safety and continuous situational

awareness.

Modeling Desirable Behaviors. I also feel very capable and competent in this area. Leading

by example has never been hard to do. I pride myself in making ethical decisions when no

one else as watching, even the simple things like picking up a piece of trash in an empty

hallway at work.

Challenging the Status Quo. I consider myself a transformational leader and I feel capable

and competent in this area. In order to get better and achieve the next level of efficiency you

have to test your comfort zone and try new things to improve processes and inefficient

workflows.

Accountability. Lastly, I feel capable and competent in this area. Following through has

always been a strong quality for me. Again reaching back to my experiences in the U.S.

Army, leaders were non-negotiable in their requirement to be accountable for their Soldiers

and their assigned equipment and building spaces. As a junior Soldier I was in charge of a

series of motor poll vehicles that were worth over 5 million dollars. The upkeep and

maintenance of the vehicles was my responsibility. As I progressed in rank and I was in

charge, I took the same approach to mold and mentor my subordinates to be accountable.
