How to plan a lesson
Activities to engage students

A LESSON PLAN IS
LIKE A ROAD MAP FOR
A TEACHER.
And knowing how to write a lesson plan that you
can perform in the classroom is a KEY for any
educator.

Every lesson plan looks different, just as every


teacher and lesson is different, but a basic lesson
plan outlines the lesson and provides an overview
of how YOU will teach the topic.

A well-designed English lesson structure should


be:
coherent
consistent
organized
A GOOD LESSON PLAN MIGHT
INCLUDE:

An objective for the lesson


Time requirements for each aspect of the
lesson
Specific activities that will be done
Materials that will be used
The method in which you will assess students’
progress

BEFORE PLANNING A LESSON ASK


AND
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS

What will I do to explain the topic?


What will I do to illustrate the topic ?
How can I engage students in the topic?
What are some relevant real-life examples,
analogies or situations that can help students
understand the topic?
What will be the goal of this lesson and what
they should learn at the end of the lesson?
WHAT SHOULD BE THE TIMING OF
LESSON PLAN?

Plan your lesson for 10-minute chunks.


Shorter tasks keep students engaged and give you
an easy to follow structure.

If you teach a 60-minute lesson, plan for 45-50


minutes only.
to arrive and to unpack (if it is offline)

1. Technology
Ask them
to film a room with their furniture
to write a post about the movie they watched
to create a reel or a storie with quotes, songs
and so on
to make a presentation about their holidays

2. The Categories Game


For this game, students will try to identify as
many words in a category as they can. The
teacher will give the students a specific topic
and the students must quickly list words related
to that topic.
This activity can be played individually or in
small groups. So if you’re teaching online one-
on-one it will work, and if you’re teaching a
small group of about 5 or 6 students, this game
will work as well.

First, choose a category that is related to the


material the students have been learning. For
example, if you’ve been teaching a lesson about
different foods, you could make the category fruits,
vegetables, junk food, breakfast foods, etc.

Start a timer for two minutes and tell the students


they can begin. Their goal is to see who can write
down the most words that fit in that category in the
time allowed. The student/team that gets the most
words in their category wins.

3. Create a story
Ask students to write a first sentence and give a
piece of paper to another students, but this
student should ask a question: where? who?
why?
The other students writes down the answer and
do the same with another. You can play as many
rounds as you want and in the end you will have
a story to read.

You can work together with an individual student or


with online class. It is more difficult to hide so you
can just ask to type in notes and then read out loud
for example.

4. Two Truths And A Lie


This is one of the better English games for
students who are more advanced (maybe at high
school class) and it can be a fun “Get to know
you” activity as well.
Ask students to write three sentences about
themselves, two that are true and one that is
a lie.
Tell students that each person will read the
three sentences and the class will guess
which one is the lie — for one-on-one classes,
this still works between you and your student.

5. Zombie
is a speaking activity designed for teens. Preparing
teenagers for exams like the FCE can be difficult.
The materials in the book are not always as exciting
as you or your students might like so they will like
this one.

Activity Time: 10 – 15 minutes +


Materials required: notes, presentation and so on
Skills practiced: speaking.
Level: Teens and adults. Pre intermediate +

Method

1. Organise the class in to groups of 2 or 3


2. So tell them zombies are everywhere. You
choose 2-3 people and they are zombie, students
change and talk but they always hold hands.
3. THe person who is Zombie must touch another
person and he or she bacames zombie too.
4. You give like 10 minutes for example and when
the time is up ask who is zombie and how many
people are not.

5. Show and tell
YOu can play in-person and online English
classrooms because it gives the students a chance
to talk about something they’re passionate about.

For show and tell, each student is instructed to


bring one of their favorite items to class. They will
show the class the item and talk about it
.
“I got this scarf from my grandmother. I got it for
Christmas last year. It is special because it reminds
me of her. Do you have any questions about this
scarf?”
By demonstrating the show and tell first, students
see exactly what the expected output is.

For more advanced students, you can also ask:

How did you get it?
Why is it special to you?
Does the class have any questions?
