BENE01 SEATWORK 1: WHAT IS SPIRITUALITY?

CHAN, SOPHIA MARIE C 1AAC

Spirituality has a wide and has a variety of understanding among people. Spirituality is an individual
practice that has something to do with our own sense of peace and purpose. Involves the process of
developing one’s belief around the meaning of life and connecting to others. There is a wide difference of
spirituality to religion. Religion is a specific set of organized beliefs and practices usually shared by a
community or group. There are also different types of spirituality. Those are as follows:
Mystical spirituality is based around a desire to move beyond the material world and beyond our senses,
ego, and even beyond time. This approach focuses on our personal relations and our sense of unity with
all things;
Authoritarian spirituality is a strong form of spirituality based around a need for definition and rules. This
spirituality is particularly common in specific religious practices;
Intellectual spirituality concentrates on building knowledge and understanding of spirituality though the
analyzation of our history and spiritual theories also known as theology;
Service spirituality is a common form of spirituality in many religious faiths. This focuses on serving
others as a form of spiritual expression;
Lastly, Social spirituality is often practiced by people who experience spiritual feeling in the company of
others. Social support is often seen as one of the important aspects. Spirituality is also used as a way of
gaining perspective, recognizing that our role in life has a greater value than just what we do every day. It
can separate a person from dependence on material things and establish a greater purpose. Some people
also see spirituality as a way of coping with change or uncertainty.

According to Sheldrake (2016), Christian spirituality has a specific content whose origins are the Jewish
and Christian scriptures. It is associated with the following of the teachings of Jesus Christ or emulating
His values. There are great variety of spiritual traditions and writings within Christianity originated at
different times and places. However, we’ve seen a new historical and cultural context. Christian
spirituality has become a major area of study. The study of Christian spirituality is also “self-implicating”,
in the sense that is not treated in a purely theoretical way but includes for practical wisdom.

A catholic spirituality encompasses a sacramental vision that sees God in all things. According to
Cunningham (2006), within the broad of Catholic tradition, the sort of religious attention that goes
beyond the ordinary observances of practicing Catholics in the sacramental life of the church. Catholic
spirituality today provides a broad array of styles, practices, and literatures, enough to engage the
interested Catholic of whatever temperament. If there is a healthy place for “cafeteria Catholicism,” it is
clearly in the area of spirituality. Doctrine, liturgy, and authority provide the framework for the Catholic
faith; the ways in which that faith gets enfleshed, nourished, and kept vigorous is a matter of choice and
taste within the broad compass of the authentic Catholic tradition.

The crucifix is the most common symbol of my own religion, Roman Catholic. My family thought me
how to pray and have faith in God. They made me go to God and thank him for all the blessings He give
us. My teacher in Catholic school teaches us how to ask for forgiveness. Even taught us the life of God on
how he protects us from our own sins. However, the challenges in life made me keep Him and rely on
Him. I trust my problem in God that this is just an obstacle that will make me the better version of myself.
He taught me that in a world full of my enemies, me with Him is the way to keep going. We may not see
Him but we can all feel Him. We all knew that he’s the only one who can lift our own problems and
guiding us to keep on living.
