Issue Number One:Welcome

I was having a conversation with Mrs. Auble in the hallway one morning near the beginning of the school year. Not surprisingly, I was talking about a book that I was currently reading when weeks. It was only when I was doing some professional reading about legal issues in public schools that I realized that I have a lot more information than just book reviews that I could (should?) be sharing with you. Thats where the idea for this newsletter came from. What I would like to do is have a monthly issue that will have some personal book reviews, popular books for students, a calendar of events, curriculum and professional resources, and more. Obviously, I realize that not everyone will be interested in this stuff, and I will not be offended in the least if you choose to delete this from your inbox as soon as you receive it. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy it , and maybe youll find something new to read or recommend to your students. Old issues will be archived at address below, in case you need to find old recommendations. http:// westfieldmiddlepolicies.blogspot.com/p/wmslibrary-newsletter-archive.html

she offhandedly suggested that I should start sending book recommendations to teachers for things they might want to read. I thought it was a good idea, but I didnt do much with it for a few

What Im Reading Now

A lot of books pass my desk on any given day. Its rare for one to hold my attention longer than it takes me to put it on a cart for re-shelving. One did recently though. It was a donated* book for the staff pleasure reading library in the lounge area of the library. The book is titled Mohawk , and it is the 1986 debut novel of author Richard Russo, most famous for his book Empire Falls. Mohawk is the story of a fictional town of the same name in upstate New York. It is told from multiple points of view of different citizens of this dying town. The town once was know for its leather tanneries, but the work has been shipped to places where the labor is cheaper. This book is a funny, sad, and ultimately moving portrait of the lives of people living in transition from one era to another. If you like John Irving or Pat Conroy, you might give this one a try. *Thanks to Cindi Nelson for the donation!

Professional Resources
New Additions Weve really put a lot of effort into beefing up our professional resources over the last few years. One thing that I added recently that is very useful in a general way is a legal guide for dealing with religion in public schools. This guide has lots of advice for avoiding legal pitfalls and challenges associated with religion and religious speech. This guide contains information on topics such as the limits on
student expression of religious speech, whether or not a teacher can pray throughout the school day, what are the boundaries of teaching about religion in a classroom, etc you care to see it that way) that create a tangled mess for adolescents to navigate. This combined with zero tolerance policies creates a state in which we set our youth up for failure. It is thought provoking and will make you lose sleep at night, but it feels essential.

You Must Read This! If youve never read The Road to Whatever by Elliot Currie, you need to run, dont walk, down to the library to check it out. Curries argument is that American middle class culture is a mess of in-groups and outgroups (winners and losers if
