ROP NO. ~ 0000-996-aVM-P-483 REV 00 UNIQUE INDUSTRIAL HANDLERS (P) LTD. TEST PROCEDURE FOR ULTRASONIC = *FOCEDURE NO UNTPCIUTFIoo TEST OF SHAFTS & FORGING Sie. pe REVISION DATE 02-07-2012 PAGE NO, Page 1 of we 1.0 SCOPE 1.1 This procedure defines the requirements of equipment, calibration, examination procedure and acceptance standards of ultrasonic examination of all rolled or forged rounds of diameter above 60 mm 2.0 REFERENCE STANDARD 24 ASTMA388 3.0 EQUIPMENT 3.1 An ultrasonic, A - Scan, pulse - echo type instrument having capability of examining at frequencies from 4 to 5 MHz shall be used. The instrument linearity shall confirm to the requirements of ASTM A ~ 388 and it shall be demonstrated during testing. 3.2 LINEARITY OF THE EQUIPMENT The screen height linearity and the amplitude control linearity shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A ~ 388 at the beginning of each testing 3.3. PROBES / TRANSDUCERS Normal probe of 2-4 MHz frequency and diameter 10-24 mm shall be used depending on the size of shaft 3.4 COUPLANT Oil with good wet ability and low viscosity shall be used as couplant The couplant used for the examination shall be the same as that used for calibration 3.5 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION The personnel performing examinations shall be qualified in accordance with ASNT / ISNT meeting the requirements of the recommended practice of ASNT ~ TC - 1A. The testing and evaluation shall be carried out by ASNT / ISNT Level - Ii qualified operator. 4.0 SURFACE CONDITION 4.1. The surface of the bars shall be free from all contaminations which might interfere with probe to specimen contact 5.0 SENSITIVITY SETTING 5.1 The sensitivity of the equipment shall be set directly on the actual job (round bar). The display NAME SIGNATURE DATE 59 range of the equipment shall be calibrated in such a way that first back wall echo from the actual job (round bar) shall be distinctly visible on the screen. After calibration of the equipment, the probe is kept in sound area of the actual job (round bar) and dB gain setting shall be adjusted in such a way that first back wall echo (BWE) height becomes 100% of Full Screen Height (FSH). This dB gain setting shall be the sensitivity setting (Primary Reference Level) and shall be recorded in the Ultrasonic Testing Report format. TEST PROCEDURE FOR ULTRASONIC — PROCEDURE NO. _UIHINTPCIUTFe01 TEST OF SHAFTS & FORGING ieee | REVGON DATE 0207-019 ae PAGE NO, Page 2 of2 5.2 For scanning, sensitivity setting shall be further increased by 6 dB (from Primary Reference Level), however evaluation shall be performed at Primary Reference Level. 6.0 EXAMINATION 6.1 After sensitivity setting, the complete round bar shall be examined radially 6.2 To ensure complete coverage of the forging / bar, the search Unit (probes) shall at least 15 % overlap with each pass. 6.3 For scanning, sensi i reased by 6 dB (from Primary Reference Level), however evaluation shall be performed at Primary Reference Level. 6.3 The rate of probe movement over the job for examination shall be less than or equal to 150 mm second, 7.0 RECALIBRATION 7.4 Any change in the search units , couplant instrument setting or scanning speed from that used for calibration shall require re-calibration. Perform a calibration check at least once every 8 hour shift. When a loss of 15 % or greater in the level is indicated , establish the required calibration and re-examine all the material examined in the Proceeding calibration period. When an increase of 15 % or greater in the gain level is indicated, re-evaluate all recorded indications. 8.0 ACCEPTANCE NORMS 8.1 Any defect echo height more than 20% of Full screen height (when sensitivity level is at Primary Reference Level) is not acceptable. 8.2 Atany location, if loss in first back wall echo is observed to be more than 20% (i.e. first back wall echo height is less than 80% of Full Screen Height) when sensitivity setting is at Primary Reference Level, the same is also not acceptable. 9.0 POST EXAMINATION CLEANING 9.1 Couplant shall be wiped off with suitable material to the extent possible. 10.0 RECORD 10.1 The component details, test date, observations and examination results shall_be recorded in the form and retained for records.
