Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, sought support from King Charles I of Spain for a voyage to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west. In 1519, Magellan led a Spanish expedition of five ships and 270 men, becoming the first European to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean by passing through the Strait of Magellan, named after him. Though Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, one of his ships, the Victoria, completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano, proving that the Earth is round.
