Semantics Exercise

A sentence expresses a complete thought with a subject and predicate, an utterance conveys meaning through speech or writing, and a proposition is the idea or meaning of a sentence independent of its structure. While related, a sentence is grammatical, an utterance communicates, and a proposition expresses meaning. Pragmatics studies how context influences language interpretation, focusing on language use in social situations. Both semantics and pragmatics study language meaning, with semantics analyzing word and sentence meaning in isolation and pragmatics considering meaning in context. They both seek to understand how language conveys meaning.

SEMANTICS exercise: Sentence, Utterance, and Proposition

Semantics, Pragmatics
Answer the following questions in brief
1. What is a sentence? Give one example.
2. What is an utterance? Give an example.
3. What is a proposition? Give an example.
4. What are the differences among the three?
5. What is Pragmatics?
6. What are the similarities between Semantics and Pragmatics?
7. Make some proposition for the sentence
“The family plans to pay our Aunt Mary a visit next month. “

1. A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought or idea and contains
a subject and predicate, which includes a verb and often an object or complement.
Example : I love listening to music while I work.

2. An utterance is a self-contained unit of speech or writing that expresses a specific

meaning. It can be a spoken statement, a written sentence, or even a gesture that
conveys meaning.
Example : Excuse me, could you tell me the time?

3. A proposition is the idea or meaning conveyed by a sentence, independent of its

grammatical structure. It can be evaluated as either true or false and usually contains a
subject and a predicate.
Example : Gado-gado is delicious

4. A sentence is a grammatical unit of language, an utterance is a unit of communication

that conveys meaning, and a proposition is the meaning or idea that is expressed by a
sentence. While all three concepts are related to the expression of meaning through
language, they differ in their focus and scope, and they serve different purposes in
communication.

5. Pragmatics is the study of how context influences the interpretation of meaning in

language. It is concerned with the way speakers use language in social situations to
convey meaning beyond the literal or grammatical content of their words. Pragmatics
examines the ways in which people use language to accomplish specific goals, such as
making requests, giving advice, expressing emotion, or conveying politeness. It also
involves the study of nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions, gestures,
and tone of voice, as well as the social and cultural factors that influence language use.
In short, pragmatics is the study of how people use language to communicate effectively
in different contexts and situations.
6. Semantics and Pragmatics are two branches of linguistics that are focused on the study
of language meaning. Even though they have different areas of focus, they share several
similarities. Both Semantics and Pragmatics are concerned with meaning, reference,
communication, and interpretation in language. While Semantics analyzes the meaning
of words, phrases, and sentences in isolation, Pragmatics considers how meaning is
influenced by the context in which language is used. Both approaches recognize the
importance of considering social and cultural factors when interpreting language
meaning. In summary, although Semantics and Pragmatics have distinct perspectives on
language meaning, they both seek to understand how language is used to convey
meaning in various contexts.
