purposes without considering the impact we have on it. Some of the issues we are currently
dealing with include deforestation, fires, pollution, temperature rise, land degradation, ocean
pollution, and the greenhouse effect. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be too preoccupied with
their phones or other personal matters, paying little attention to what is going on around them.
Some people question the truth of global warming. Many individuals think that human
activity is solely to blame for global warming. Hurricanes are one of the many consequences of
global warming that we can see all around us. We contribute to this by increasing the amount of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which raises the earth's temperature. We increase the amount
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by producing more products from factories, cars, and cutting
down more trees. In her essay "The Siege of Miami," Elizabeth Kolbert also discussed the issue
of rising sea levels. She stated that “As temperatures climb, so, too, will sea levels”. (Kolbert,
1165). An increase in temperature will enable the glaciers to melt and the sea level to rise. She
further said that “What I said is, humans are not responsible for climate change in the way some
of those people out there are trying to make us believe, for the following reasons: I believe that
climate is changing because there’s never been a moment where the climate is not changing.”
(Kolbert, 1172). Nobody wants to accept blame or admit that we are to blame for global
warming. There must be a reason for why the climate changes so frequently, and I think humans
for human consumption, many businesses nonetheless do so. Animal experiments are costly and
time-consuming in large part because they are conducted on the animals over an extended period
of time, during which researchers gather and analyze a vast amount of data to make sure they are
not overlooking any negative consequences. Michael Pollan discusses animal liberation in his
work "An Animal's Place." He stated that “Except for our pets, real animals—animals living and
dying—no longer figure in our everyday lives. Meat comes from the grocery store, where it is
cut and packaged to look as little like parts of animals as possible.”. (Pollan, 1460). Other than
the animals we own as pets, we do not interact with or see other animals, and since we do not do
so, we do not oppose to eating or killing them. However, because we see our pets daily, we have
developed an emotional bond with them. He also stated that “Indeed, the very premise of a great
deal of animal testing—the reason it has value—is that animals’ experience of physical and even
some psychological pain closely resembles our own.” (Pollan, 1467). Animals that are used to
mimic us in experimental settings such as mice, rats, dogs, and other creatures are not humans,
by their very nature, have different genetic backgrounds that make them distinct from us. Even
though animals may feel some of the same physical and even psychological suffering that people
experience, this does not necessarily imply that the outcomes will be the same. The manner
that diseases that emerge in real people can vary greatly from the artificial methods that they are
Animals play a significant role in nature; they assist plant reproductive by transporting
pollen from one plant to another and by dispersing the seeds that will eventually develop into
plants and supply us with produce. In his work "Untamed," David Sedaris addressed the fact that
not every animal can be tamed to be a pet. In the text he stated that “He’s under the impression
that the occasional chicken carcass is enough, that anything else will “spoil” Carol-will, in fact,
endanger her.” (Sedaris, 1013). Sedaris addresses how denying animals the ability to forage for
themselves can reduce their ability to survive in the wild, for example. Someone once claimed
that their dog was a vegetarian, but when a hamburger spilled on the sidewalk, the dog ran to it,
the owner jokingly claimed the dog was only for the pickle. He also stated that “Foxes are like
gang members.” (Sedaris, 1017). Despite Carol being fed continuously by Sedaris, she is still a
wild animal, and nothing can make Carol lose her natural survival instincts.
Some of the issues we choose to neglect include animal liberation, global warming, and
the importance of animals in nature. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be too preoccupied with
their phones or other personal matters, paying little attention to what is going on around them.
