Solid State Physics

Miller indices form an annotation system in crystallography for planes in crystal lattices. In particular, a family of lattice planes is determined by three integers h, k, l, and the Miller indices are written (hkl). They denote the family of planes orthogonal to the linear combination of the reciprocal lattice vectors. Miller indices are also used to designate reflections in X-ray crystallography, where the integers are not necessarily in lowest terms. Miller indices were introduced in 1839 by British mineralogist William Hallowes Miller, although an almost identical system had already been used by German mineralogist Christian Samuel Weiss since 1817.
