 Dictionary skills:
A dictionary is an important reference material. You can
use it to find a word’s definition, part of speech, pronunciation, syllables and more.

How to read dictionary:


1. Understand guide words:
There are two guide words at the top of the
dictionary. These are called guide words. They tell you the first and last words
in the page. For example: abet- above.
2. Understand entry words:
Entry words are the words that can be looked up in the
dictionary. Entry words are usually printed in dark print. Lamp (lam) noun -1…
lamp (lamp) noun- a device that gives off light.
3. Understand part of speech appropriate:
In the dictionary, there are little latter after
the word telling you the parts of speech. These are called parts of speech
appropriate. A list of appropriate are:
 Adjective –adj.
 Adverb – adv.
 Verb- vb-v- or vi.
 Noun-n.
 Pronoun – pron.
 Preposition –prep.
 Conjunction –conj.
 Interjection – interj.
 Article- art.

4. Understand the pronunciation:


There are some symbolic words written
alongside of the dictionary words. The purpose of these symbolic words is to
tell the reader about the pronunciation of the words by highlighting stress and
intonation of the words.
5. Understand syllables:
Syllables are beats of sound. Place your head under
your chain and say bananas. How many times did your chain touch your hand?
That is the amount of syllables in the word for example Rab-bit.
6. Understand alphabetic order:
Alphabetic order is used in both the
dictionary and thesaurus. It mean to arrange in the order of the alphabet, ex
Apple, Banana, Carrot.
7. Understand antonyms and synonyms:
Synonyms are words that mean the
same thing and antonyms are words that mean the opposite. For example: The
synonyms for hate is dislike and the antonyms is love.
8. Understand root words:
Root words are words that can have suffixes and
prefixes added to it ex kind.
9. Understand prefixes:
Prefixes are attached to the front of the root words to
add a function. Ex unkind.
10. Understand suffixes:
Suffixes are attached to the end of the root words to
add a function. Ex kindness.
