The tidal theory proposes that a passing star caused a tidal wave in the primitive sun that stretched out into a long filament. As this filament condensed, it separated into pieces of various sizes that eventually formed the planets. However, this theory has several counter arguments, such as not explaining the origin of heavy elements in the planets and contradicting the conservation of angular momentum in the solar system.

JEANS – JEFFREY’S CONJECTURES OF THE TIDAL

TIDAL THEORY
THEORY

In the
1 beginning the ‘Primitive’ sun was a big,
stationary, incandescent, gaseous mass of matter.
Besides the sun, there was another star named as
‘intruding star’ in the universe.

The ‘intruding’ star travels along a path which takes

it to2 a near collision course to the ‘primitive’ sun.

When
3 the ‘intruding star’ comes near to the
‘primitive sun,’ its gravitational force is maximized;
thus creating a giant cigar-shaped tide, length in the
thousands of kilometers. This gigantic, cigar-shaped,
mass of matter was given the name ‘Filament’.

The Filament was much thicker in the center , and

4 end it was thinner and sharper.
at the

The contraction of the filament led its break down in

several pieces. Every piece was condensed to form
one5 separate planet. 9planets were formed due to
this process.

The remaining parts of the ‘primitive sun,’ became

our6sun (hot ball of glowing gases).
The Tidal Theory, a variation of the
planetesimal concept, is proposed by
James Jeans and Harold Jeffreys in
1918.

it suggests that a huge tidal wave,

raised on the sun by a passing
star, was drawn into a long
filament and became detached
from the principal mass. As the
stream of gaseous material
condensed, it separated into
masses of various sizes, which, by
further condensation, took the
form of the planets.

COUNTER-ARGUMENTS FOR THE

TIDAL THEORY

No explanation for the origins of heavy

elements such as iron and nickel

This theory of creation of the solar system

contradicts the abundance of solar systems in
the galaxy

The angular momentum of the system isn’t

conserved

Lyman Spitzer showed that a column of

material drawn out of the sun would
dissipate rather than condense

The current orbits of the planets don’t match
