CivE 596 – Group Assignment 2 on Formwork, Planning, Estimating, & Scheduling

Due Wednesday June 21st at 5pm.

1. Forms are being designed for an 12ft high concrete wall to be poured at rate of 6 ft/h, internally vibrated at
a temperature of 90o F. Sheathing will be 4x8 ft sheets of ¾ in thick class I plywood with face grain
perpendicular to studs. Studs and double wales will be 2x4 in. lumber. Snap ties are 2500 lb capacity with
1½ in. wide wedges bearing on wales. Deflection must not exceed l/360. Determine the stud, double-wale,
and tie spacing. Allowable stresses for lumber being used for studs and wales are: Fb = 1500 psi; Fv =
140 psi; Fc = 800 psi; Fc⊥ = 485 psi; Ft = 640 psi; and E = 1,700,000. The concrete is 150 lb/cu ft and uses
type II cement with a retarder. Also, determine the spacing of 4”x6” braces (from one side) connected to
the wall at a height of 8’ and anchored to the ground at a distance of 5’ from the wall. Note: Refer to the
PowerPoint presentation on LEARN with formwork design examples.

2. Design the formwork for a concrete slab 6 in. thick. Sheathing will be 1-in. (nominal thickness) lumber, with
0.75” effective thickness and the following allowable stresses: Fb = 1075 psi; Fv = 174 psi; and E =
1,360,000. Joists are 2 x 8 in. and Stringers are 4 x 8 in. lumber. Assume that all members are continuous
over three or more spans. Commercial 4000-lb shores will be used. The weight of the formwork is 5 lb/sqft
and live load is 50 lb/sqft. Allowable stresses for the joists and stringers are: Fb = 1250 psi; Fv = 180 psi;
Fc⊥ = 405 psi; FcII = 850 psi; and E = 1,400,000. If joists are spaced at 2 feet, stringers at 8 feet span, and
shores at 5 feet spacing, check the safety of this design and suggest any changes. Also, check the bearing
of the joist on the stringer. Deflection must not exceed l/360.

3. The brickwork on the front face and one side of a house has the dimensions illustrated in the following
drawing. Perform quantity take off and duration estimation using three types of bricks: Standard, King, and
Jumbo. The bricklaying crew would be four brick masons and two laborers. The average production rates
and the brick quantities per square foot of wall surface area (includes factor for waste) are shown the
following table. Ignore the openings in the walls.

LENGTH = 59’

Brick quantity / SF Production per brick mason

- Standard 7.4 / SF - Standard 400 bricks / day
- King 5.7 / SF - King 385 bricks / day
- Jumbo 3.3 / SF - Jumbo 360 bricks / day
4. For the project network below: (a) Identify the critical path and calculate activities’ total floats; (b) What is
the effect of delaying activity H by 6 days on project duration? (c) Follow the instruction in the tutorial sheets
on MS project in the notes and compare your solution with that of MS project. Provide a screen capture that
shows all week days as working days with gridlines, in the same format as shown below.

5. The cross section of a highway under construction is shown below. You are involved with the earth-
moving subcontractor engaged in the following activities:
1.8 m 12 m 0.9 m 1.5 m

Subbase

Activity Description Quantity per 100m

1 Excavation (Common Earth, using wheel-mounted front-end loader) 684 m3
2 Prepare and Roll Sub-Base. 1620 m2
3 Base for road, 300 mm Gravel, Bank Run 1200 m2

a) Investigate and list possible methods to do the common-earth Excavation using the optional wheel-
mounted front-end loader capacities in the attached RS Means tables. What choice would you make?

b) Determine the crew type, duration, and cost of the activities above (each highway section is 300m).
6. You are to develop a plan for building your own dream bungalow home of one floor and a finished basement, using
the activities shown in the figure below:

a. Check several web resources on house construction, including the video on Learn;
b. Divide the activities into two categories: substructure; and superstructure. List important construction
precautions that should be followed to ensure quality in each category (10 each). Provide references;
c. Create a table with a list of the activities involved in each category. Identify the relationships among the
activities and draw an AON for the construction plan.

7.
a. Why is a WBS needed?
A To suit our CPM needs. e. This relationship means:
B To facilitate work packaging and estimating.
C To perform forward pass calculations.
D To draw the Bar Chart.
A The start of B is after the start of A by 3 days.
B B is a successor to A.
b. What do the categories in the MasterFormat represent? C Lag time of B is 3 days.
A 16 categories of possible building tasks. D All of the above.
B All WBS tasks of a project linked to the OBS.
C 4 categories: FS, SS, SF, and FF
f. Select the TRUE statements:
c. Critical activity is one that: A Delaying a non-critical activity decreases its total float
A Lies on the longest path in the network B CPM takes into account project deadline
B Has negative total float C Slow construction methods are less costly than fast ones
C Has positive total float

d. Which statements are correct? g. Which of these statements is TRUE?

A This is a critical task A C depends on both A and B.

B It's a Non-Critical Task with ES = 1 and EF = 11 B D depends on B only.
C LS = 3 C D depends on both A and B.
D Total float is only 4 days because it is delayed 2 days
h. What are the values of: FF for C, and TF for C?

l. Which activities are critical in the following table?
