Simple Curve Sample Problem 1

The document describes a simple curve connecting two tangents with given bearings. It provides the stationing of the point of intersection and point of curvature. It then shows calculations to determine the radius of the curve, external distance, middle ordinate, chord distance, and length of the curve.

Simple Curve Sample Problem 1

A simple curve connects two tangents AB and BC with bearings N85°30’E and S68°30’E, respectively. If
the stationing of the PI is 4+360.2m and the stationing of PC is 4+288.4m,

a. Determine the radius of the curve.

b. Determine the external distance.

c. Determine the middle ordinate.

d. Determine the chord distance.

e. Determine the length of the curve.

Sta. PI = 4+360.2m

Sta. PC = 4+288.4m

T = Sta. PI - Sta. PC

T = (4+360.2m) – (4+288.4m)

T = 4360.2 m - 4288.4 m = 71.8 m

I = 180° - 85°30’ - 68°30’ = 26°
