Write down all the resources that are used in your department.
How can you make sure that all the resources are used without losing time or money?

In our extract from Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll seems to capture the essence of goal setting. Alice
lacks a clearly defined goal, therefore she could not decide which road she ought to take. Any organisation
or individual who lacks goals will face the same dilemma. Given the choice of alternatives they won't be able
to decide which road to take.

a) What are the implications of not setting goals for a company?

b) What are the implications of not setting goals for a manager?

do you think would happen to the organisations if the different departments did not work well
together? Think of aspects such as buses or trucks not serviced properly and not released for
use in time.

Group A: what is meant by scarce resources and which resources in SA could be considered scarce?
Group B: what is meant by opportunity cost and give 3 different examples of opportunity cost as it could
affect imports or exports
Group C: use at least 3 products or services as examples and explain how shortages or surpluses affect
price.

Group debate
Divide the class into 2 groups. Hold a debate about the advantages and disadvantages of international trade.
One group has to be in favour and the other group against international trade. The following specific concepts
should be debated in terms of advantages and disadvantages:

a) Trade agreements: what their purpose is and how they benefit or disadvantage industries in SA?

b) Import and export tariffs

c) The risks to the importer and exporter

d) Benefits to the importer and exporter

Think of the industry in which your organisation operates. Draw a diagram of the distribution of goods from the
