VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY (VSU)

History
VSU is a leading global institution in agriculture and associated subjects, located on
the island of Leyte in the central Philippines, surrounded by a high mountain range
and the Camotes Sea. Its flagship campus in Baybay City is commonly regarded as
the Philippines' most beautiful educational site. A Provincial Board Resolution
established the institution as the Baybay Agricultural School (BAS) on June 2, 1924.
It was renamed Baybay Agricultural High School (BAHS) in 1934, and with the
adoption of Commonwealth Act No. 313 in 1938, it was turned into the Baybay
National Agricultural School (BNAS). By virtue of Republic Act (RA) No. 2831, which
was passed on June 19, 1960, BNAS became the Visayas Agricultural College
(VAC). Following its conversion to Visayas State College of Agriculture (ViSCA) on
May 24, 1974, by Presidential Decree (PD) No. 470, and amendment by PD No. 700
on May 12, 1975, the institution saw fast expansion and development. In 1999, four
higher education institutions in the province of Leyte were merged with the College
to form the ViSCA system, which now has five campuses. ViSCA was renamed
Leyte State University (LSU) on August 11, 2001, thanks to RA No. 9158. By virtue
of RA No. 9437, LSU became Visayas State University (VSU) on April 27, 2007. The
Visayas is VSU's mandate. The foundation of VSU fulfilled the Philippine
government's goal of establishing three Zonal Agricultural Universities (ZAUs) to
serve the country's major regions: Visayas State University (VSU), Central Mindanao
University (CMU), and Central Luzon State University (CLSU).
