Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 6 EARTHQUAKE

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for teaching 6th grade science about earthquakes. The objectives are for students to define earthquake, explain the two types, and understand the difference between magnitude and intensity. Examples and activities are used to motivate students by simulating an earthquake with jelly and objects. Key points taught include how tectonic and volcanic activity can cause earthquakes. Students learn safety precautions for before, during, and after an earthquake occurs. They practice earthquake drills and are evaluated on comprehension through short questions.

Detailed Lesson Plan In Science 6

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the pupils should be able to;
A. Cognitive
*Define what is Earthquake.
*Explain the two types of Earthquake.
*Explain the difference between magnitude and intensity.
B. Affective
*Appreciate the importance of Precautionary Measures in
case of an Earthquake.
C. Psychomotor
*Perform an Earthquake Drill.
ll.SUBJECT MATTER:
A. Topic: Earthquake
B. References: Into the Future Science and Health VI page 206-209
C. Materials: visual aids,books, jelly,sticks, marshmallow
lll.PROCEDURE:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY PUPIL’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminaries
1. Routinary Activities
A.Greetings
-”Good morning Teacher”
“Good morning class!”
-”Better than yesterday”
“How are you today?”
“Good to hear that.”
B.Prayer

“Before we start our lesson, we - (The pupils will stand up and pray.)
will pray first. Everybody
please stand.”
(The teacher will assign a pupil
that will lead a prayer.)

“Before you sit down please

under your chairs/ tables and

chairs. the class and will report.
C.Checking of attendance
The teacher will call the class -Our lesson yesterday is all about the
monitor to report in front of the class different crustal plates on earth.
the number of absent and present.
2. Review previous lesson
“What was our lesson last Crustal plates are large and small
meeting?” Please raise your hand moving rock layers.
if you want to answer.

“Very good!”
“What is a crustal plate?”
B. LESSON PROPER
1. Motivation
The teacher will show the class a
jelly, sticks and mallows. (The pupils will observe)
(The jelly will serve as the soil and
the sticks and mallows will serves
as the building.
(The teacher will let the pupils to
observe.) -“Yes, the structures moved.”

(The teacher will ask questions)

*What happened to the jelly after I - The structures moved because you
jiggle it? exerted force causing an imbalance
* Did the structures move? Why or to its position,
why not?
“Correct! The jelly moved.” - Because the pressure you applied to
What caused the structures from the container with the jelly caused

*Why do you think so?

2. PRESENTATION
Precisely! Same thing happen
when there is an earthquake. Intense
heat from the Earth;s interior affects
the plates to move. Pressure from
above and beneath the crust causes
the plates to move. The pressures
produces cracks and faults.

When energy is released from the

moving crustal plates, the
surrounding rock layer trembles and
shifts. This movement is called an
Earthquake.

There are two types of Earthquake.

1. Tectonic Earthquake
2. Volcanic Earthquake

Tectonic Earthquake
-is the shifting or the movement of the
crustal plates. Earthquake happen
when the tectonic plates rub against
each other which will make the crust
of the earth shakes.

Volcanic Erthquake
-is caused by the volcanic activity.

Intensity
- is the extent of damage/ destroyed
caused by an earthquake.

Magnitude
-is the amount of energy released by
an earthquake.

Seismograph
- is a device use to measure the
movement of the earth’s crust. It can
also detect and record the vibration of
the earths surface.

Things to do BEFORE an
EATHQUAKE

1. Practice the DROP,COVER and

HOLD.
2. Make an emergency plan.
3. Secure heavy items that are
hanged on the wall.
4. Fix structural damages that could
cause your house to collapse during
an earthquake.
5. Store flammable materials in the
safe place.

Things to do DURING an
EATHQUAKE

1. Stay under the sturdy table when

an earthquake occur.
2. If you are in a crowded place drop,
cover and hold.
3. Move away from display shelves
containing objects that may fall.
4. Move away from
buildings,wires,sinkholes and gas
lines.
5. If you are in a moving vehicle stop
as quickly and safely as possible.

Things to do AFTER an
EATHQUAKE

1. Check yourself and other for

injuries.
2. 2. call an ambulance for seriously
injured person.
3. Listen to the radio for important
information and instruction.
4. Check your water, gas and electric
lines for damage.
5. Check for damage
Or cracks to the roof and foundation
of your home.

C. GENERALIZATION
Group Activity
The class will be divided into 3
groups. Each group will perform a
short earthquake drill. After 10
minutes of preparation each group
will perform in front of the class.

IV. EVALUATION
Answer the following questions in a
1/4 sheet of paper. Fill in th blanks
with the missing terms.
1. _____is the amount of energy
released by an earthquake.
2. _____is a device that measures
the movement of the earth’s crust.
3. The shaking of the crustal plates
brought about by the release of
energy from the earths interior is
called_____.
4. _____is the point on the surface of
the earth located directly above the
center of an earthquake origin.
5. The extent of damage caused by
an earthquake is called_____.

D. ASSIGNMENT
Create an emergency plan in case an
earthquake is expected to occur.
