1. TITLE

Fire Alarm System Procedure for Manyar Smelter Desalination Plant Project.

2. PURPOSE

This procedure describe the requirements for the construction, installation, inspection and
test of fire alarm system at Manyar Smelter Desalination Plant Project.

4. DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURES

4.1 Preliminary to Installation

1. Identify the content, page layout and information contain within associated fire
alarm system.
2. Identify construction types and structures used in fire alarm system
3. Identify the types, size and characteristics of fire alarm system
4. Describe the basic layout and locate specific information from the construction
drawings.
5. Compile a materials list from the packing list and construction drawings.

4.2 Sag-Tension Calculation

1. Compare equipments and devices nameplate data with drawing and


specifications.
2. Verify correct location and elevation to ensure that fire alarm panel, heat detector,
smoke detector and alarms is installed in wet or damp location, in dust-laden
areas, indoors, or in any hazardous area.
3. Carry out an installation of a photoelectric or ionization detectors with a base in
accordance with all relevant codes, standards and manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Carry out the installation of an aspirating smoke detector system in accordance
with all relevant codes, standards and manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Heat detectors shall be installed in workshops, such as machine shops, electrical
shops, carpenter shops, paint shops, maintenance shops, and laboratories in
which flammable or combustible are stored or handled.
6. Smoke detectors shall be installed in computer rooms, record storage facilities,
every room containing valuable or irreplaceable materials.

7. Smoke alarms shall be installed on each storey of multi-level dwelling unit, such
that there is at least one smoke alarm on each storey.
8. Every fire alarm system including those with voice communication capability shall
be provided with a main power and an emergency power supply.
9. Manual pull stations shall be installed in each floor area, adjacent to each required
exit door and in the path of egress from the building. They shall be so located as
to be readily visible and accessible and not likely to be obstructed.
10.Audible signal appliance shall be installed throughout the building except exits, so
as to be effectively heard in all parts of the floor area above all other sound.
11.The control unit shall be located inside the building at or near the main entrance
so as to be accessible at all times to authorized personnel and the fire
department.
12.Central alarm and control facility shall be located on the street entrance floor of
the building to which the fire department would normally respond and within a
sound resistant room or enclosure of adequate size to accommodate equipment
and operating personnel.
13.Wiring for fire alarm systems should be followed in installing in installing all interior
wiring and conduit systems refer to Cable Construction Procedure (MSD-DD-
7600-CONS-PRO-0001)

4.3 Inspection and Tests

1. The inspection and tests of fire alarm system shall be carried out either by the
manufacturer of the equipment.
2. All interior Fire Alarm Systems shall be visually inspected at least once a month
by a competent person holding a certificate of fitness for inspection, to determine
that they are in proper working order and ready for immediate use.
3. Inspections and tests shall be recorded in a log book that shall be kept inside the
MECP (Master Emergency Control Panel). Detail of all service calls required or
undertaken shall be recorded in this log book.
4. Before any testing, the occupants of the building shall be advised that a test is to
be conducted. Before performing any simulated fire alarm call, the Local Fire
Alarm Monitoring station shall be contacted and advised of the impending test.
On completion of the test the Client of the building and the Fire Alarm Monitoring
Station shall be contacted to advise them that the installation has been reset and
left in an operable condition.
5. Visually check the installation, location and sitting of that equipments and
components against the system installation records.
6. Check battery float charge voltage and current. These shall be within specified
tolerances.
7. Disconnect the ac mains and measure the standby battery voltage under full
load condition. The battery voltage shall not be less than 95 percent of nominal
voltage. If less than 95 percent of nominal voltage the battery shall be tested.
8. Reconnect the ac mains and measure the current from the battery charger. This
current shall be within specified tolerances.
9. Check operation of all mechanical and electrical components of the systems.

10. Measure the audible signal level, and compare it with the level achieved at the
client requirements.
11. Check that the frequency of flashing visible signals is between 60 and 120
flashes per minute.
12. All interior Fire Alarm System manual pull stations shall be tested on to
determine that each station is in proper working order.
13. All automatic sprinkler system water flow alarm shall be tested, under the
supervision of a person holding a certificate of fitness.
14. All smoke detectors shall be clean and tested for sensitivity annually, in
accordance with manufacturer’s procedures and specifications.

7 RISK AND SAFETY ANALYSIS

7.1 For safety first when cutting, drilling, drilling and welding connections the workers should
consider with all task to provide fire extinguisher, and to wear safety glasses and hand
gloves.
7.2 Use the isolated tools when connection and testing of cable to prevent electric shock
incident.
7.3 Unnecessary materials shall be removed from the work area to prevent impact to
another (Human & Material
7.4 Inspection of all tools / equipment and its calibration certificate prior to used
7.5 Provision of appropriate barricade and signage
7.6 Floor/Cable trench opening should be identified and provided with physical barriers and
signage, cover it properly as necessary
7.7 Ensure proper illumination in the work area
7.8 Pre-work inspection, identify potential pinch/crush points and discuss with workers during
toolbox meeting.
7.9 Ensure tools and equipment used only for its intended purpose and according to proper
handling technique or manufacturer recommendation
7.10 Disconnect equipment when not in use, but do not pull cable to disconnect; pull the plug.
7.11 Provide additional fire extinguisher at hot work area and fire watch.
