BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Client draping is considered an important aspect of overall service

because it contributes to the client’s safety and comfort. Draping procedure
varies according to the hair service asked by the client. Hair services are
classified as wet, dry and chemical service. Wet hair service includes rinsing,
shampooing and conditioning. Dry hair service includes haircutting and
hairstyling while chemical service includes hair coloring, permanent wave,
and chemical hair relaxing and other treatment such as hair rebonding.

Basically, there are three types of drapes based on the different hair
services: 1) shampoo drape for wet service; 2) haircut drape for dry service
and; 3) chemical drape for chemical service. A drape can also be single or
double drape. Single drape is used for a simple service such as shampooing
prior to haircutting while double drape is used for a chemical hair treatment
to provide double protection to the client.

A. SHAMPOO DRAPE
A shampoo drape, sometimes called a wet drape, is used for shampoo
and styling or a shampoo and haircutting service.
LESSON 2.1 MATERIALS AND IMPLEMENTS FOR SHAMPOO
/WETDRAPING SERVICES.

The materials needed for shampoo drape include plastic cape, towels,
and a clip.

4
Draping Procedure for Shampoo/Wet Services

A shampoo drape can be single or double drape. A single drape is used

for shampooing prior to haircutting while double drape is used when a
chemical service has been done for double protection. Before performing
shampoo drape, make sure to prepare the client following the steps discussed
in the previous lesson. The procedure for a shampoo drape prior to haircut or
a hairstyle using a single drape is as follows:

1. Sanitize hands.
2. Secure the hair using a butterfly clip.
3. Place a towel over the client’s head. Bring the two ends of the lower
portion of the towel to the front.
4. Wrap the plastic shampoo cape around the neck and fasten at the back.
Use two fingers between the plastic cape and the client's nape to make
sure not to fasten the cape too tight on the client's neck.
5. Bring the towel down on the shoulder.
6. Put the hair down.
7. Extend the shampoo cape over the chair before shampooing.

Reminders:
• Never allow the shampoo cape to come in contact with the client’s skin
to avoid contamination.
• The shampoo cape and towel should be sanitized after every use.

B. HAIRCUT DRAPE
A haircut drape is used when a client asks for a haircutting service or
other dry service. There are times that a shampoo service is given before doing
the haircut, hence a shampoo drape is first performed. Once the shampoo
service is completed, the towels are removed and replaced with the materials
for haircut drape.

Materials Needed for a Haircut Drape

The materials for haircut drape include paper neck strip, cloth or nylon
cape and clip. A neck strip is used to protect the cape from touching the neck
of the client. It also protects the skin from loose hair and sweat while the
cloth cape is used to prevent the hair from getting into the client clothes and
skin.

Procedure for a Haircut Drape

The procedure in performing haircut drape is as follows:

1. Sanitize own hands.

2. Secure the client’s hair with hair
clip or clamp when giving service to
a female client.
3. Place neck strip around the neck
and tuck end inside.
4. Place the cloth cape over the neck
strip and fasten with a clip.
5. Fold the uncovered portion of the neck strip over the cape.
6. Extend the plastic cape over the chair.
7. Unclamp the hair and begin the haircutting or any dry service.

Reminders:
• Never let the cape come in contact with client’s skin.
• Dispose waste material on a trash can.

6
C. CHEMICAL DRAPE
A chemical drape is used for chemical service or treatment such as hair
coloring, permanent wave, and chemical hair relaxing. A professional draping
is achieved when the client’s clothing remains dry and not stained after a
chemical service.

Materials Needed for Chemical Drape

In a chemical drape, the client is draped
with a nylon cape, rubber coloring collar and
two cloth towels-one placed under the cape
and one over the cape. The towels remain as
a part of the drape until the service is
completed and are regularly checked for
dryness and replaced by the stylist. A
coloring collar can be used to prevent the stan
from chemical from getting into the cape and
towel.

7
Procedure for Chemical Drape
All chemical services like hair color, chemical relaxer, permanent
waving and soft curl permanent requires a “double drape” method. The
following is the procedure in draping the client for chemical service using
double drape:

1. Sanitize hands.
2. Secure the hair with a plastic clip.
3. Place first towel over the head. Bring the ends of the lower portion of
the towel to the front.
4. Take the` second towel and wrap around the neck over the first towel.
The second towel protects client’s clothing from chemical stain.
5. While holding the ends of the towel at the front, place the plastic cape
over the towel and bring to the back. Insert two fingers inside the
cape to prevent choking the client and fasten.
6. Bring the first towel down.
7. Put the rubber collar over the towel.
8. Extend the plastic cape over the back of the chair.
