HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration

Identify the topic you chose to explore

Tulsa Massacre
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your history or experiences.
The Tulsa Race Massacre, also known as the Tulsa Massacre or the Greenwood Massacre,
occurred in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921 (Messer, 2021). In shocking racial
violence, a white mob assaulted and destroyed the rich African-American neighbourhood of
Greenwood, sometimes known as "Black Wall Street." The massacre caused the burning of houses and
businesses, killing hundreds of Black citizens and eviction of thousands of others. The incident has
received more awareness and attention in recent years as a symbol of the systematic racism and
brutality against Black communities in the United States after being mostly buried from mainstream
history narratives for decades. The entire scope of the catastrophe has been uncovered to spread
awareness and foster peace in the wake of it.
Describe your beliefs, assumptions, and values related to your chosen topic.
Many believe the Tulsa Massacre was a tragic and heinous event in American history,
highlighting the deeply rooted racial inequalities and systemic racism plaguing the country. They believe
that the early 20th century's racial unrest, economic envy, and white supremacy were the causes of the
murder (Weatherford, 2021). A dedication to addressing the past injustices experienced by the Black
community, seeking truth and healing, and striving toward a more fair and inclusive society are values
often linked with debates on this subject. People may also value education and knowledge to guarantee
that such crimes are remembered and learnt from to stop them from happening again in the future.
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or modern society.
The topic of the Tulsa Massacre remains highly relevant to current events and modern society
for several compelling reasons. It emphasizes the long-lasting effects of systematic racism in the US, first
and foremost. The massacre dramatically illustrated racial violence and the devastation of an
economically successful Black community. It was also a symbol of the racial tensions and injustice that
have permeated American history (Messer, 2021). Discussions about racial inequity, police brutality, and
the quest for racial justice are still important topics today. Understanding the Tulsa Massacre highlights
the need for significant change and reconciliation while shedding insight into the historical causes of
these current issues.
Second, arguments regarding historical truth-telling and restitution have expanded due to the
Tulsa Massacre's newfound attention in recent years. The investigation into the entire scope of the
catastrophe, recognition of its effect on the victims' ancestors, and consideration of restitution have all
gained traction (Weatherford, 2021). This symbolizes a greater cultural change that goes beyond the
Tulsa Massacre to include other racial violence and prejudice episodes in American history. This trend is
towards recognizing past injustices and demanding responsibility. In essence, the Tulsa Massacre's
continued importance comes from its ability to be a potent symbol of the need for racial reconciliation,
justice, and equality in contemporary society.
