(d) With the help of neat sketches, explain the role of damping on deformation
response and phase angle for a damped system excited by harmonic force under
steady-state deformation. [20 marks]

Q2.
(a) With the help of neat sketches, explain the vibration control measures of
structures for (i) wind loading and (ii) earthquake loading. [30 marks]
(b) The deformed shapes of a fixed-base and a base-isolated buildings are shown in
Figure Q2.
(i) With the help of neat sketches, draw the available degrees of freedom of the
fixed-base building and the base-isolated building. [10 marks]
(ii) With the help of neat sketches, explain the procedure of simplifying the base-
isolated building as a single-degree of freedom system for dynamic analysis.
[20 marks]
(iii) Derive the governing equation of motion of a base-isolated building with
coulomb friction type of isolators under earthquake ground motions. State
the assumptions clearly. [40 marks]

Q3.
(a) A simply supported beam of length I and mass m1 shown in Figure Q3a carries a
body of mass m2, at its mid-point. Assuming that the shape of the vibrating beam
can be represented by a half sine wave y yo sin( x l ) and the weight of the beam
m1 = 0, find the lowest natural frequency of transverse vibration of the beam using
the Rayleigh method. State the assumptions clearly. [40 marks]

(b) Two storey single bay shear frame shown in Figure Q3b has storey mass m lumped
at first and second storey levels. All beams are rigid and each storey stiffness is 2k.
Stating the assumptions clearly;
(i) Determine natural frequencies of the building. [30 marks]
(ii) Determine mode shapes of the building. [30 marks]
