This document contains the questions for an end of semester exam on Dynamics of Structures. It includes 3 questions with multiple parts each: 1. Derive equations of motion for single-degree of freedom systems and discuss types of damping. Derive and plot responses to harmonic forcing. Explain the role of damping on deformation responses. 2. Explain vibration control measures and available degrees of freedom for fixed and base-isolated buildings. Derive equations of motion for base-isolated buildings. 3. Q1. Answer the following questions briefly;

(a) Derive the governing equation of motion of a single-degree of freedom system
under earthquake ground motions. State the assumptions clearly. [20 marks]

(b) Describe the over-damped, critical-damped and under-damped systems.

[20 marks]

(c) Derive an expression for the displacement response of an undamped single-

degree of freedom system subjected to a harmonic force as shown in Figure Q1
and plot the expected total response and steady state response. [40 marks]

fixed-base building and the base-isolated building. [10 marks]

(a) A simply supported beam of length I and mass m1 shown in Figure Q3a carries a
body of mass m2, at its mid-point. Assuming that the shape of the vibrating beam
can be represented by a half sine wave y  yo sin( x l ) and the weight of the beam

m1 = 0, find the lowest natural frequency of transverse vibration of the beam using
the Rayleigh method. State the assumptions clearly. [40 marks]
