Global Demography TCW

This document discusses global demography and the theories affecting population trends. It explains that global demography is the study of worldwide population rather than a specific region. It also outlines the stages of demographic transition from high birth and death rates to low rates, leading to population growth and stabilization. Several theories are presented that influence demographic shifts, such as declining mortality rates due to development and the impact of diseases. The effects of global demographic changes on globalization are also examined.

THEORIES OF DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION

AFFECTING GLOBAL POPULATION
Demographic transition is the process wherein a country's population transitions from high birth and death rates to low birth and death

rates, resulting in population growth that eventually stabilizes.

The stages of demographic transition were first identified and described by demographer Warren Thompson in the 1920s.

The stages of demographic transition

In stage 1, populations have high fertility rates and high mortality rates.
-resulting in a stable population.
*Fertility rate refers to the number of births in a population.
*Mortality rate refers to the number of deaths in a population.
Stage 2 - high birth rates and declining death rates.
-medical advances and increased access to healthcare result in declining death rates while birth rates remain high, leading to
rapid population growth.
Stage 3 - declining birth rates and declining death rates.
-birth rates begin to decline as socioeconomic conditions improve and women gain more education and access to family
planning services.
Stage 4 - low birth rates and low death rates.
-both birth rates and death rates are low, resulting in a stable population with an aging demographic.
Some countries may also experience a stage 5, those countries with a low fertility rate and high life expectancy.
Ex. Japan, Italy, Germany, South Korea, and Greece.

THEORIES OF DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION

Neo-Malthusian Theory

- This theory is based on the writings of economist Thomas Malthus, who predicted that population growth
would outpace food production, creating adverse consequences. Because of the demographic transition, societies
will experience population growth, leading to dwindling resources and environmental degradation in the long term.
Effects on Global Population
Positive
-Could promote family planning,
Negative
-Unsafe abortion,

Modernization Theory
-This theory posits that industrialization and modernization lead to a decrease in birth rates. As societies become
more developed, access to education, healthcare, and family planning services, women's participation in the labor
force, and urbanization will drive demographic transition.
Effects on Global Population
- Economic Development,

THEORIES OF DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION

Political Economy Theory

- This theory focuses on the socio-economic and political factors responsible for demographic transition.
As the theory suggests, a country's political and economic structure determines its population dynamics,
mainly through its influence on social and healthcare policies, distribution of wealth, and access to
education.
Effects on Global Population
- International trade, Economic policies

Epidemiologic Transition Theory

- This theory emphasizes the impact of disease on demographic transitions. As societies become more
developed, healthcare services, better sanitation, and improved living standards reduce mortality rates and
increase life expectancy, leading to demographic transition.
Effects on Global Population
- improved health and life expectancy,
