Design Examples

This document summarizes the design of a water tank and roof slab. For the tank wall: the thickness is designed to be 170mm with 12mm bars at 140mm c/c for bending moment and 12mm bars at 90mm c/c for hoop tension. For the roof slab: a 12mm mesh at 20mm c/c is designed for the central region and 12mm circumferential bars at 100mm c/c are designed for the edge region. Both designs meet code requirements for strength.

Design Of Vertical Wall

a)      Working Stress Method

The lengths of the walls (20 m and 25 m) are

larger when compared with the height. The
walls will act as cantilevered from the base with
some end constraints.

The bending moment coefficients are taken

from table 3 of IS 3370 (Part IV)-1965 R-1999

cxa = -.02 -0.02

cyb = -0.063 -0.06
cyc = -0.03 0.03
The corresponding bending moments are :
Mxa cxa . y . H3 -28.94
MYb cYb . y . H3 -91.16
MYc cYc . y . H3 43.41
The axial load coming on the wall from the roof
slab for the 2.5 m width is
Ps = w L/2 = 9.5 × 2.5/2 11.88

Let the self weight of the wall for 300 mm

40.50
average thickness ( assumed ) be Pg =

Total axial force 52.38

At the bottom of the wall the bending causes

tension in the concrete on the water face, so
the design of the section is controlled by
M/Z-P/A=scbt
The bending moment and the axial force at the
base are
M = (-Myb) 91.16
P= 52.38
6M/t^2-P/t<=scbt=2
t=((6M-P)/scbt)^0.5 0

The effective thickness of the wall is also

obtained for comparison by the cracked theory.

J = 0.90 0.90
, K = 0.29 0.29
Neglecting the effect of the axial force, we have
d= 233.48
Provide 520 mm thickness 520

Then the area of the tension reinforcement is 1,546.21

inner face at the bottom of the wall. As the
bending moment at the mid height of the tank is

Design a cantilever retaining wall (T type) to retain earth for a height of 4m. The backfill is
horizontal. The density of soil is 18kN/m3. Safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 kN/m2.
Take the co-efficient of friction between concrete and soil as 0.6. The angle of repose is
30°. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel.
