Scientific Illustration: Art/ - . - . - Lesson Plan

This lesson plan teaches 4th-6th grade students about scientific illustration by having them draw and label the parts of a lily. Students will view a slideshow on the history and process of scientific illustration. They will then observe lily samples and use rulers to carefully draw illustrations showing the lily's structures. The teacher will demonstrate the techniques and provide differentiation. Students will self-assess their drawings against a rubric. The lesson incorporates science, technology, engineering, math and religious concepts.

Teacher’s name: Stephanie Jones Lesson grade: 4-6th grade appropriate

Room number: Art

Enduring Understanding/Unit Goals: Students will understand the importance of Art in Science,
and the career choice of a scientific illustrator.

Essential Question: How and why are scientific instructions used, and what does it take to be
a scientific illustrator?

National Core Art Standards (the last number “___a” is the grade the standard is for.):
VA:Cr1.2.4a - Collaboratively set goals and create artwork that is meaningful and has a purpose to the makers
VA:Cr1.2.5a - Identify and demonstrate methods of artistic investigation to choose an approach for beginning a work of art
VA:Cr2.3.4a - Document, describe, and or represent natural objects
VA:Cr2.3.7a - Apply visual organizational strategies to design and produce art or media that clearly communicates
information
VA:Cr3.1.4a - Revise artwork in progress on the basis of insights gained through peer discussion
VA:Cr3.1.6a - Reflect on weather personal artwork conveys the intended meaning and revise accordingly
VA:Re8.1.4a - Interpret art by analyzing characteristics of form, structure, contextual information
VA:Re8.1.6a - Interpret art by distinguishing between relevant and non-relevant contextual information and analyzing subject
matter, characteristics of form and structure and use of media to identify ideas
VA:Re9.1.4a - Apply one set of criteria to evaluate more than one work of art
VA:Re9.1.6a - Develop and apply relevant criteria to evaluate a work of art

Lesson Objective: Students will construct a scientific Illustration of a lily. Through observation, students will
investigate lily cut in half and create a drawing that differentiates and labels the parts of a lily.

Materials needed:
● A lily cut in half
● Photograph of a lily cut in half
● Paper
● Pencil
● Magnifying glass (optional)

Technology/21st Century Learning:

Teacher made Google Slide show for this assignment (see attached print out of slides)
Students will upload their artwork via ipad to their personal online artist portfolio

Slides 1-2 Discuss history/evolution of Scientific Illustration (Davinci to computer graphics)
Slide 3 - Compare/contrast scientific illustrations
Slide 4-5 - Identify and describe the makeup of a scientific illustration
Slide 6 -7 - Assignment criteria and grading rubric
Slides 8-9 - Tell students they can learn more, slideshow and links will remain on our Art Class google

Students are seated at table 5 students per table, one lily half per table
Students measure and draw an illustration of a cross section of a lily.
Students use ruler as a straight edge to create lines for labels
Students will be learning about and labeling these parts on their illustration in science class
Process: View slideshow, students create drawings based on observation, students
use a ruler to measure the lilies’ parts and use the ruler as a tool to draw their label lines.
Guided Practice: Teacher demos how to draw each part of a lily and reiterates the
importance of size, composition, and neatness.
Check for Understanding/Closure: Students can self assess comparing their
illustration to the rubric and revise their artwork accordingly. Teacher can observe if drawings are
accurate
Independent Practice: Students will measure and draw their lily based on observation.
Differentiated Instruction:
● Any students with flower allergies can use a photograph of a lily instead
● Use peer tutoring or allow students to work in pairs
● Stand near to students when instructions are giving
● Eliminate distractions from desk (ex. Give students rulers only after their
drawings are finished)
● Printouts of simple checklist of criteria for students overwhelmed with the rubric

Interdisciplinary Components:
● Science - Students will learn about a lily, its parts, their purposes, and pollination
● Technology - Students can photograph and upload their drawings to create lines and text with
computer software
● Engineering - This will lead into next lesson - Students will understand that Leonardo Da Vinci
was an artist, scientist and inventor. He invented/ engineered flying machines based on his
scientific evaluation and artwork of birds and birds in flight.*
● Math - proportions, symmetry, measuring
● Religion- The symbol of the Easter lily / Catholicism
