Rainforest Newscasting Script
Recently, there were hopeful developments for tropical rainforest conservation including declines in
deforestation around Indonesia and the Brazilian Amazon. However, the outlook for tropical rainforests
remain tenuous with the impacts of environmental crisis and macroeconomic trends. Despite the
negations towards environmental advancements, lawmakers presents a formidable block to ensure
environmental protection.
Ever since the Brazil's Amazon rainforest hit its lowest level due to deforestation, the current president
"Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva", enacted institutional environmental policies in efforts to end deforestation by
2030. Brazil's government unveiled Lula's "anti-deforestation plan" and pledge to 'eliminate' if not,
'lessen' deforestation and forest fires using extensive measures including strengthened law enforcement
regarding environmental crimes and economic development. Lula also tried to persuade other countries
to pay for initiatives designed merely to safeguard the Amazon through the so-called "Amazon Fund".
Around 72% was already lost of the rainforests of Indonesia due to deforestation, threatening the
habitats of Sumatran tigers and Orangutans. It also harms the millions of people who are dependent on
the forests for food, shelter and livelihood.
Global warming is also bad news for Indonesia's Peatlands which stores around 35 million tons of carbon
dioxide, as when drained, burned and replaced by plantations, it would release tons of carbon dioxide
and set stage for devastating forest fires.
Currently, Indonesia has been taking action through petition and investigating major companies who are
responsible for deforestation all to pave way for a deforestation-free country.
As a country, Myanmar has had a greater diversity of ecosystems than any other nation in Southeast Asia
for it has the most intact natural habitats that sustains many communities of endemic and globally
threatened species.
In Myanmar's Sagaing Region, the mountainous peaks slopes down to fertile lowlands that inhabits a
fantastic number of wealthy flora's and fauna's. Clouded Leopards, Golden Cats, Banteng, Sunda,
Chinese Pangolin and a small population of Endangered Asian Elephants are all found in the forest. As
well as the iconic Vulnerable Eastern Hoolock Gibbons-- rare Asian primates, holds a stronghold within
Myanmar's rainforest.

Coming from Argentina, forest fires have affected around 1.8 million hectares of Argentina's rainforest in
2022 between October and November and lasted about the beginning of January 2023.
According to the coordinator of Greenpeace Argentina's Forests and Climate Change Campaigns, Hernán
Giardini, fires are the growing problem over the last three years in Salta all because Argentina has been
experiencing severe drought, causing "many outbreaks of fire to spread". Ever since 2019, Argentina has
been 12.8% drier than average according to a report from Argentina's National Meteorological Service
(ANMS).
Giardini also stated that 95% of Argentina's fires are mainly caused by humans, explaining that some are
accidental, some are intentional and that it is often caused by negligence. Additionally, only 5% of these
fires are caused by natural calamities.
Ana Alvarez, the President of the Chaco Argentina Agroforestry Network, explained that a large number
of forest-dependent Indigenous population inhabits the provinces of Argentine Chaco Region and that
deforestation is affecting their access to resources and is being driven away by industrialization. The
forest is home to 3,400 plant species, 500 bird species, 150 mammal species, 220 reptiles and 100
amphibian species.
Despite Argentina's Forest Law, many provinces are not willing to comply. Resulting to a great loss of
hectares and devastating decrease of the wildlife as there are no corridors left for animals to travel from
Argentine Gran Chaco to the rest of other countries.
Several countries have agreed to strengthening coordinated actions on forests and biodiversity to
combat greenhouse gasses, degradation and deforestation. Climate change have also brought upon
abrupt forest fires, burning twice as much and becoming more widespread. Amidst such calamities,
United Nation agencies, development institutions, governments, conservationists, private sectors and
key stockholders have worked under pressure to help protect the world's rainforests. According to Mario
Boccucci of the UN-REDD, we already have more evidence on taking actions on ground being effective
but at the same time, we could not afford to be complacent.
