COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course explores the application of management techniques to computer capabilities,
informational system requirements and design. Topics include the system approach to data
communication, system design and system analysis. Emphasis is placed on equipment
configuration, contract negotiation, cost containment techniques, and software evaluation.

The effective management of an organization in today’s environment without at least some


knowledge of information systems would be difficult, if not impossible. This course
Management Information Systems examines some general management concepts and the role
information systems play in the development of an organization. The different types of
information systems will be identified – how they affect the organization and its employees, and
how they can bring about a competitive advantage.

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. To equip students with information about the applicability of various network alternatives
and software applications within a particular business environment
2. To identify the requirement, challenges and issues associated with the management of
technology systems, resources, processes and support systems.
3. To assess computer security concerns and vulnerabilities associated with information
technology and systems within an organization.

1. Describe the evolution, current state, and trends in information technology as well as
their business implications.
2. Explain how information systems can be used for strategic competitive advantage.
3. Analyze and explain the applicability of various network alternatives within a
particular business environment, and explain the requirements and challenges
associated with the management of same.
4. Analyze and explain the applicability of various software applications within a
particular business environment, including decision support systems, intelligent
systems, and executive information systems.
5. Assess computer security concerns and vulnerabilities associated with information
technology and systems within an organization.
6. Explain the relevance and evaluate the potential of e-commerce, e-business, and m-
business with respect to a particular business environment
7. Identify opportunities that exist for information technology applications in a
particular business environment
8. Appreciate the issues involved in the effective management of information system
resources, processes and systems.
9. Demonstrate the ethical, legal, and privacy issues associated with information
technology and information systems. Apply database systems and data mining within

Course Overview and Introduction/Expectations

Welcome to MGMT485: Management Information Systems.

This course will be conducted Online via PowerPoint and discussions based on the text,
supplemental materials, and individual assignments. Discussions are designed to enhance
collaborative learning and assignments; quizzes and tests are to enhance an understanding of the
material presented in the course.

The course is designed to assist at least 97 percent of the class to pass the course with a C or
higher grade during the term.

Presentation of Subject Matter:


This is a theoretical course; class activities and short lectures will also be used presenting and
explaining the concepts. Included in the class activities will be learning units that require
analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills.

Class Conduct
▪ Regular attendance is expected (see bulletin regarding absent policy)
▪ Lateness is not accepted
▪ Cell phones are not allowed to ring or to be used in class
▪ Proper dress code adherence is required. General modesty
▪ Participation in class discussion is required and should be kept civil, along established
parliamentary procedure
▪ There should be no wearing of jewellery in class.
▪ Acquire and read prescribed texts
▪ Late assignments will not be accepted
▪ Any changes in syllabus will be announced. It is your responsibility to record such
changes
▪ All work must be referenced APA style. Plagiarism is NOT allowed!
▪ There should be no eating or drinking during class session
▪ SMS/LMS use is mandatory
▪ Any assignment/test, quiz or discussion that is not submitted for grading via the
Moodle system will automatically receive a score of 0.

- Enjoy maximizing your learning. See assignments and discussions as ways of vigorously

Grading Information /Course Work Weighting

Coursework

Weight 60%

Coursework should include:


Online Discussion –four (4) discussion questions will be posted on Moodle platform. Students
are required to participate in all discussions in order to receive the maximum points.
Participation will only be accepted via the Moodle system. 10%

Assignments (faith and learning reflection and student presentation) – These are
individual activities. (See rubric – course resources on the Moodle system 20%

Quizzes – two (2) quizzes will be given as open book timed quizzes, (quiz 1 – chapters 11-12
consisting of 20 multiple choice questions, quiz #2 – chapters 13-14 consisting of 20 multiple
choice questions, These quizzes will be administered through the Moodle – Safe Exam Browser
(SEB) 10%

Test – There are two (2) sectional tests will be given as open book timed tests – test # 1
chapters 1-4; test #2 and chapters 5-8 – There are short answer questions. These quizzes will
be administered through the Moodle – SafeExam Browser (SEB) 20%

Final examination
The final examination is comprehensive examination. It consists of sixty (30) multiple choice
and four (4) Short essay questions. This will be administered through the Moodle – Safe Exam
Browser (SEB) (Please monitor your email and NCU E-bulletin boards for the time and dates.)
(40%)

CLASS DISCUSSION/ PARTICIPATION:


Participation in the course is measured by your involvement in four (4) discussion questions for
the semester. For you to earn full score for class participation you should be in class/online each
week and participate in all discussion topics posted. The discussion questions are all posted and
opened on the Moodle system. These questions will close on the dates specified.
Your first discussion will close on September 18, 2023. The class will use the threaded
discussion feature in the Moodle system to facilitate discussion/participation. Each student must
make at least one original contribution to each discussion topic each week. Your substantive
contribution should be at least two paragraphs (one hundred fifty (150 words) with source to
support your argument. Each student must also respond to or comment on the contributions of at
least two other students’ posting (At least one paragraph- with thirty (3) words) for each
discussion topic. Please note that your contributions should be substantive and worthy of your
effort. (Responses that merely state something along the lines of “I agree, good point, thank you
for stating that interesting point” do not meet the criteria of ‘substantive.) In addition, I will
contribute and ask follow-up questions where necessary. If a follow-up question is directed to
you, be sure to respond. Discussion/participation, in the form of these contributions, represents
10 percent of your final grade. Remember that in addition to your discussion contributions, you
are required torespond to at least one (2) other students’ comment for each discussion topic.
You are to post your comments on the discussion thread in Moodle.

Rubric for Discussion:


If you make all 3 contributions per discussion and all are substantive, you will receive up to 100
percent per question; 2 substantive contributions, 67%; 1 substantive contribution, 33%; no
contributions, 0 percent.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

Classroom instruction consists of traditional lectures, demonstrations, and individual learning


activities. To be successful, it is important for the student to be familiar with the material before
class meets. Students should expect to do these learning activities to be assigned for completion
outside of regular class hours.

All work must be referenced APA style. Plagiarism is NOT allowed!

Assignments
Assignments will be in the form of faith and learning reflection and student presentation).All
assignments must be turned in on time in order to receive appropriate credit for them. Late
assignments will be subject to penalty.

When doing assignment please keep in mind the following policies.


1. More than adequate time will be given for assignments. Late assignments will send a signal
to the instructor that the student is not putting enough time for the class.
2. All work must be turned in on time via the assignment board on the Moodle system
3. Any assignment/test, quiz or discussion that is not submitted for grading via the the Moodle
system will automatically receive a score of 0.
Quizzes
Two (2) quizzes will be given covering the current chapter. They must be taken during the time
period allotted. Only students with legitimate excuse will be granted extension or resubmit and
then only within one class period of the date when the student notify the lecturer. These quizzes
will be administered through the Moodle – Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

Sectional Tests
Two (2) sectional tests will be given covering the current chapter. These tests must be taken during
the time period allotted. Only students with legitimate excuse will be granted extension orresubmit
and then only within one class period of the date when the student notify the lecturer. These quizzes

Attendance
Attendance at class is very important. Each class, new material is covered, and assignments
given. Students must also be in class on time.

While in class all cellular phones must be shut down or silenced.

It is an offence to engage in the act of plagiarism. All sources used in any presentation must be
properly cited. Violation of this procedure will result in a failing grade (zero), for the work being
submitted. ‘Cutting and pasting’ will not be accepted as students’ legitimate work, as this
constitutes fraud, which is a criminal offence.

grade.
▪ All papers and assignments submitted should include a certificate of authorship digitally
signed by the student.
▪ Be aware that any submitted work for this course may be subjected to detection of
plagiarism and breach of copyright.
▪ Participation - students are required to login regularly to the online course website
(frequency will be designated by instructor, e.g. 5 times per week). An audit/tracking
feature embedded in the eLearning system - SMS, will be utilized to monitor student

activity. Students are also required to participate in all class activities such as discussion
forums, online chat or conference sessions and group collaboration.

▪ Conduct within the Online Learning Environment - the same guidelines that apply to
traditional classes should be observed in the e-Learning environment. Please use proper
netiquette when interacting with class members and the course instructor.

Learning Activities and Learner Interaction


Course Format
Students are expected to allocate their time among a set of interrelated activities in and outside of
the classroom. The following activities will be expected from each student.
1. Independent reading and completion of chapters exercises, quizzes, and preparation for class
discussions
2. Independent preparation of assignments, tests and quizzes
3. Presence online. You are expected to log each class session to be considered present in this
class.

ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY


All students are expected to maintain a high level of responsibility with respect to academic
honesty. Students engaged in cheating or academic dishonesty of any form will be subject to
disciplinary penalties which include the possibility of failure for the course and/or dismissal from
the University. Cheating, dishonesty, plagiarism, copying portions of another student’s work are
totally unaccepted and will be dealt with seriously. A minimum penalty will be a zero for the
course work submitted. Further action may be taken at the instructor’s discretion. In view of the
fact that such dishonesty harms the individual, all students and the integrity of the University,
policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.
