CHAPTER 2 SETTING UP A DRAWING LEARNING COMPETENCIES: 1. Be able to change screen LIMITS, SNAP, and GRID 2. Use coordinate entry methods and on-screen picking 3. Create simple geometry using LINE, CIRCLE, ARC and FILLET 4. Set up UNITS BRIEF INTRODUCTION Every object we construct in a CAD system is measured in units. We should determine the system of units within the CAD system before creating the first geometric entities. LESSON PROPER 3.1 Set up drawing units ie a In the Menu Bar select: Layer States Manager. This will set the measurement to the default English units, inches. > Set the Precision to two digits after the decimal point as shownin the above figure. Next, we will set up the Drawing Limits by entering a command in the command prompt area. Setting the Drawing Limits controls the extents of the display of the grid. It also serves as a visual reference that marks the working area. It can also be used to prevent construction outside the grid limits and as a plot option that defines an area to be plotted/printed. Note that this setting does not limit the region for geometry construction. In the Menu Bar select: [Format] > [Drawing Limits] Layee. Layer States Manager. Layerteoke Color. Linetype. Press the ENTER key again to accept the default coordinates <12.00,9.00>. EA~ LIMIts Specify upper right corner <12.@0,9.00>:Inside the Menu Bar area select: [View] > [Zoom] = [All] The Zoom All command will adjust the display so that all objects in the drawing are displayed to be as large as possible. If no objects are constructed, the Drawing Limits are used to adjust the current viewport. okey Fa Nore iw eh ccna 3.2 Choosing the Origin The origin or 0,0 should be the most easily accessible point on the design. If a large percentage of the dimensions on a drawing stem from one point, it should be made the origin. The coordinate readout on the bottom of the screen is there to help you find your position. The placement of the origin is important to establish a base for your readouts. It will be more important later when merging files. To move 0,0 from the bottom of the screen use the PAN command ® td You can press down on the roller ball of your mouse to get PAN. The command line equivalent is PAN or just P. The Zoom Command > by typing it on the command line, Z > using the slider bars on the top and bottom of the screen> using the pull-down menus or the standard toolbar Command: ZOOM or Z Al (A) expands or shrinks the Illodel or drawing to fit onto the ‘screen relative to your limits Center (C) _ centers the model on the screen; you must enter a magnification factor or “height” Dynamic creates a dynamic display of the item for zooming (0) Extents (E) expands or shrinks the model or drawing to fit ll of the objects on screen Previous (P) returns you to the Previous zoom factor Realtime zooms interactively to a logical extent.
