INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODOLOGY

UNIT 2. BEING TEACHERS

READING TASK

PRE-READING
1. Before reading the chapter, reflect about the qualities or aspects that a good teacher must have.
Write a short list of the characteristics you think they must possess.
 The ability to motivate the students.
 The ability to be patience.
 The teacher needs to be a mentor or guide rather than an authority.
 The ability of adaptation
 They need to be respectful with students.
 They need to be creative.

READING
Read chapter 6 of The practice of English Language Teaching by Jeremy Harmer, that you can find in Teams
in ‘Material de clase’ folder, and:
2. Describe the definitions of the following Teacher Roles:

 Controller: like the name says, the role of this teacher is to be only for transmission and
control the whole class.
 Monitor and evidence gatherer: just to offer corrections or information about the activities
to the students.
 Prompter and editor: gives suggestions to the students to develop their skills.
 Organizer and task setter: focus on the achievements of the students, this one also likes to
summarize the information.
 A Teaching ‘aid’: this one use mime, expressions, and gesticulation.

3. Summarize the suggestions for CPD (either professional or personal) that a teacher can do for
experiencing burnout.
 Initial teacher training.
 Lifelong learning.
 Remain engaged and motivated
 Talking to others
 Exploring new things.

POST-READING
4. Think back to some teachers you have had in your life. What do you remember about them and
their lessons? The teacher’s personality? How you felt in their presence? Can you recall specific
lessons? Specific teaching techniques? What it was like to be a student in that room? What words
or phrases characterize the atmosphere of the classes?

I remember a math teacher in my marketing career. Before I had classes with that teacher I was
never good at math and, I always thought math was difficult, but with that teacher the class was
very fun and understandable. Somehow she made us understand perfectly how to solve the
exercises even for the least studious of us and thanks to her and her teachings I managed to have a
much better understanding of mathematics and she motivated me to continue learning it to the
point that I became the best in her subject.

5. Do you have a similar image of the teacher you feel you should resemble? Explain.
I think that with effort I could be a good teacher, maybe not the one who manages to empathize with all
students but I could definitely be one of those teachers who manage to solve the doubts of students
without difficulty, teach clearly the subjects taught and motivate or teach to observe different points of
view to solve the problems of their classes and activities.
In a few words, maybe I would not be the teacher they want but the one they need.
