DESTINY TRAINING LEVEL 3

MODULE 5
CLASS 05
A LEADER CONTROLLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
Biblical Reference: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control… (Galatians 5:22-23).

I. CLASS OBJECTIVES

1. To understand that the abilities that each one has as a leader are not our own, but are
God-given and come from allowing Him to act in our lives.

2. To put the principles of personal growth into practice in order to become effective in
leadership.

3. To remember that God is the one to perfect His children in every area.

4. To evaluate if the traits of a leader are present or not and if they are attainable.

II. INTRODUCTION

A. The Requirement of True Leadership

1. True leadership requires an intense and deep work in each person’s heart. The work of
leadership requires effort and patience in order to see fruit. If we do not become
discouraged, we’ll see extraordinary results.

2. David started with a group of men who were failures, but was able to form them into a
great army (1 Samuel 22:1-2). He worked on developing their character.

B. Our Two-Fold Task

1. Our task is two-fold: We must allow the Holy Spirit to form our character, and we must
also aid our disciples in being formed until their personality is a reflection of Jesus.
III. LESSON: A LEADER CONTROLLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

A. Internal Foundation: Christ-like Character

Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand that we should walk in them.

1. God created us to enjoy a relationship with Him, and for our lives to reflect His
character.

2. When our lives are full of God, His goodness will be seen in our actions (Matthew 7:16-
17).

3. A life that is under the influence of the Holy Spirit, will produce the “fruit of the Spirit”,
which represents the kind of character we should have…

Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

4. Jesus is the only one who can positively influence our character. If we allow Him to
govern our lives, He will remove any negative influence that we my have been affected
by in the past.

B. Fundamental Tips that Will Help Us Grow

1. Nurture your faith daily. Faith comes from hearing God’s Word, so we must be
determined to study and understand the Scriptures. Learning to live by faith will elevate
our lives above our circumstances.

1 John 5:4 (NKJV)

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has
overcome the world—our faith.

2. Be a balanced person. Avoid extremes. Paul advised Timothy to…

1 Timothy 4:12-16 (paraphrase)

Be an example in speech, conduct, and in love.
Devote yourself to Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you.
Watch your life and doctrine.

3. Involve your family in the ministry. The G12 Vision contributes to the development of
the family, so that each member is committed to God and His work. This is what it
means to be a “priesthood family.”

Exodus 19:6 (NKJV)

And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words
which you shall speak to the children of Israel.

C. The Goal: Discipleship

1. The kind of leadership that God wants exercised in this challenging and daring time is a
leadership that will help men and women grow in Christ-like character.

2. Jesus wants His character developed in our lives. This is not easy. It requires
dedication and the help of the Holy Spirit.

3. Remember, the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is reflected by fruit: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control
(Galatians 5:22-23).

D. Traits that Stand Out in the Personality of a Leader

1. Enthusiasm. This is not childish positivity but passion that comes from knowing God’s
Word and declaring it over every situation. Do not lose heart. Be renewed daily in
God’s Word. Don’t fix your attention on the temporary, but on the eternal.

1 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NKJV)

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the
inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a
moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we
do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the
things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

2. Integrity. A good leader inspires trust in others, especially from their family and
disciples. Others need to see that our lives are submitted to God’s Word.

Titus 2:7-8 (NKJV)

7 In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing
integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that
one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

3. Confidence. Someone who does not believe that God can use them will never dare to
face new challenges. Instead, they believe that if they try something, they will fail.

Numbers 13:30 (NKJV)

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take
possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”

4. Trustworthiness. We must treat every responsibility, small or great, as an important
matter. Never pursue personal gain out of what has been entrusted to you. Trust that
God will exalt you, instead of exalting yourself. People will see Jesus in you (1 Samuel
16:18).

5. Discipline. Just like an athlete trains daily in order to be successful, believers must train
in spiritual matters (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

6. Perseverance. Never give up. When a seed is planted, it takes time to grow. If you
quit, your harvest will come but you won’t be around to see it (Galatians 6:9).

7. Multiplication. Leadership is not about what you can accomplish. It’s about equipping
others to do the same. Ministry cannot end with you. We must multiply ourselves so
that others are equipped and empowered to the serve the Lord and be involved with this
vision.

Matthew 10:8 (NKJV)

…Freely you have received, freely give.

IV. CONCLUSION

You are God’s masterpiece. Christ’s character has been reproduced in you and you have self-
control. Get to know the traits of your new character in Christ. Learn to submit to the control
of the Holy Spirit. This will result in the fruit of the Spirit developing in your life, which gives
you authority in ministry.
