DESIGN BUILDINGS:

IS 456–2000

It is a code of practice for the design of plain and reinforced

concrete.

First version released in 1953

Second version released in 1957

The third version released on 1984

The latest version released on 2000

It provides specifications or specifies other indicators of the
need for various materials used in the manufacture of concrete
for manufacture. Both strength and serviceability requirements
must be met in design.

IS 800–2007

It is a code of practice for the design of General Construction in

steel-code and practice.

First version released in 1950

Second version released in 1956

The third version released on 1962

The fourth version released on 1984

The latest version released on 2007

It provides guidelines for different types of steel, the loads to be
considered in the design, and the design method of the steel
members by the limit state method. It provides service
requirements that must be met in design.

IS 875–1984

It is the Code of Practice for Design Loads (Other Than

Earthquake) For Buildings and Structures.
It has five parts. Such as,

IS:875 (part 1) -1987 deals with dead loads of buildings

IS:875 (part 2) -1987 deals with imposed loads of buildings

IS:875 (part 3) -1987 deals with Wind Loads on Buildings and

Structures

IS:875 (part 4) -1987 deals with snow loads on roofs of

buildings

IS:875 (part 5) -1987 deals with special loads and load

combinations

It will guide us for determining these loads on the building to be

designed.

IS 1343–1980

This is the practical code for precast concrete. Provides

guidelines for material selection, specifying workability,
inspection, and testing. General design requirements and the
limit state method are provided for structural
design. durability requirements are also mentioned.

IS 1893–2002

It gives criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures.

 IS 4928–1993

Is the code of practice for Earthquake Resistant Design and

Construction of Buildings.

IS 13827–1992

Gives guidelines for Improving Earthquake Resistance of Low-

Cost Strength Masonry Buildings.

IS 13920–1997

It is the code of practice for Ductile Detailing of Reinforced

concrete structures subjected to Seismic Forces.

IS 13935–1993

Gives guidelines for Repair and Seismic Strengthening of

Buildings.

IS Codes for Reinforced Concrete Design of Structures

Following are the design codes in India: (i) IS 456: 2000 – plain and reinforced concrete – code
of practice (fourth revision) (ii) Loading standard codes The loads to be considered for structural
design are specified in the following loading standards: IS 875 (Part 1 to 5) : 1987 – code of
practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for buildings and structures (second revision).
Part – 1: Dead loads Part – 2: Imposed (Live) loads Part – 3: Wind loads Part – 4: Snow loads
Part – 5: Special loads and load combinations IS 1893: 2002 – criteria for earthquake resistant
design of structure (fourth revision). IS 13920: 1993 – ductile detailing of reinforced concrete
structures subject to seismic forces.

Design Handbooks:
The bureau of Indian Standards have also published the following handbooks which serve as
useful supplement to the 1978 version of the codes. Although the handbooks need to be updated
to bring them in line with the recently revised (2000 version) of the code, many of the provisions
continue to be valid (especially with regard to structural design provisions). SP 16 – 1980 –
Design Aids (for Reinforced Concrete) to IS456: 1978 SP 24: 1983 – Explanatory handbook on
