Aml Case Study - Original
This basic case study is designed to assess your ability to identify abnormal transaction patterns. You will play
the role of a junior financial analyst tasked with monitoring account activities for potential irregularities. Your goal
is to spot unusual transactions and recommend further investigation.
Case Scenario:
You have recently joined ABC Bank as a junior analyst responsible for monitoring customer transactions. Your
supervisor has assigned you to review the account of a customer named Pam Beesly, a 30-year-old individual
who has had a savings account with the bank for two years.
Pam Beesly is an employed individual with a steady income. She uses her savings account for everyday
expenses and occasionally transfers funds to her linked checking account. A series of small cash withdrawals
from ATMs located in a different city, far from her usual residence occurred. There were frequent online
purchases from international e-commerce websites, which is unusual for her spending habits. A large incoming
wire transfer from an unfamiliar foreign account also occurred during the review period.
Pam has not reported any issues with her account, and she appears unaware of these transactions. Her account
activity has otherwise been consistent with her normal spending habits.
Tasks:
1. Analyze the customer's transaction history and pinpoint any suspicious or abnormal activities.
2. Determine whether these transactions warrant further investigation or alerting the bank's security team.
3. Propose a plan for conducting a preliminary investigation, specifying actions you would take, information you
would gather, and any potential questions you would ask Pam.
Evaluation:
Your case study performance will be assessed based on your ability to:
Note: This case study is simplified to focus on basic pattern recognition and identification of potential irregularities
in customer transactions. Your responses should reflect your understanding of basic financial monitoring
principles and attention to detail.
