4a ANSWERS Periodic Patterns (2017)

1. The document provides questions and answers about periodic patterns and the periodic table. It asks the student to label different parts of the periodic table including group numbers, period numbers, and different families of elements. It also asks the student to explain what a group and period are in terms of valence electrons. 2. The document states that the elements in the periodic table are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. 3. It notes that the graph of melting points for periods 2 and 3 show a periodic pattern that repeats, with the pattern being the same across both periods.

Island School Chemistry ANSWERS PT & E 4a

Periodic Patterns
Aim: Understand the terms group and period. Recall the positions of metals and non-
metals in the Periodic Table. Understand that the Periodic Table is an arrangement of
elements in order of atomic number. Give examples of periodic patterns.

Questions:
Use your textbook or the internet to find websites which will give information about the
Elements and the Periodic Table and answer the following question.

1 On the copy of Periodic Table provided, label (or use crayons, and a key, to shade) the
following parts of the Table:

 Group numbers
 Period numbers
 The alkali metals
 The alkaline earth metals
 The halogens
 The noble gases
 The transition metals
 The division between metals and non-metals

a. Explain what a group is on the periodic table, mention valence electrons in

your answer.
 A vertical column
 All elements in a group have same number of valence electrons

b. Explain what a period is on the periodic table, mention electrons in your

answer.
 A horizontal row
 All elements in a period have the same number of occupied shells

c. For each of the groups of elements you have labelled, find out two similarities
that each of the elements in the group share. Annotate your periodic table
with the information you have collected.
d. Describe the general characteristics of metals and non-metals:
E.g

Metals Non-metals
Conduct electricity and heat Don’t conduct electricity or heat
Malleable; ductile Brittle
Shiny Dull
Sonorous Sonorous

2. How are the elements of the Periodic Table arranged?

 In order of ATOMIC NUMBER

3. The graph below shows the melting points of the period 2 and period 3 elements.

The melting points show a periodic pattern. Explain what this means.
THE PATTERN REPEATS AT REGULAR INTERVALS/ THE PATTERN ACROSS

PERIOD 2 IS THE SAME AS THAT ACROSS PERIOD 3

4

Li+ O2- F-
Na+ Mg2+ S2- Cl-
K+ Ca2+ Br-
Rb+ Sr2+ I-

 IONS IN THE SAME GROUP HAVE THE SAME CHARGE

 POSITIVE ION CHARGE = GROUP NUMBER
 NEGATIVE ION CHARGE = GROUP NUMBER - 8
