Chapter 1 MS Classified

The document discusses hardware and software components of a computer system. It defines hardware as physical components like the monitor, keyboard, hard drive, and CPU. Software is defined as programs that control the hardware, like operating systems, word processors, and anti-virus software. The document also compares RAM and ROM, explaining that RAM is volatile memory that stores running programs, while ROM is non-volatile and stores startup programs. Finally, it contrasts graphical user interfaces (GUIs) with command line interfaces (CLIs), noting that GUIs are more user-friendly since icons reduce memorization of commands compared to CLIs.

9 Any four from:

− RAM stands for random access memory and ROM stands for read only memory
− RAM stores the running programs/data being processed by CPU and ROM stores startup
programs (such as BIOS)
− RAM is volatile and ROM is non-volatile
− RAM can be read from and written to while ROM can only be read from
− RAM tends to have larger storage capacity than ROM [4]

11 Four from:
−
GUI more user friendly than CLI
− In CLI the commands have to be memorized which is not the case in GUI
− Icons in GUI speed up finding instructions, CLI you have to type the commands in full
− Due to graphics GUI uses more memory than CLI
− Hard to edit a command in CLI
− In CLI, several commands have to be typed in rather than one operation in GUI [4]
