Different Types of

Documentaries
Fly On a Wall
Fly on a wall is a type of
documentary which
observes the subject and
what they are doing
without interfering or
narrating over them.

These give a better

understanding of their
daily lives than if someone
was narrating over it.
Participatory
A participatory
documentary is where the
filmmaker and sometimes
the crew actively appear
on camera, participating
with the documentary
subject.

These documentaries help

involve the community
which is being
documented.
Expository
An expository
documentary uses
narration and other
techniques to present the
topic. This is the most
commonly used type of
documentary.

Expository documentaries
are usually focused on
civil and animal rights, as
well as climate change.
Interview
Interviews are when you
get the perspective of the
main subject and
bystanders and get their
account of how the event
occurred.

A lot of true crime

documentaries use this
style to let the victims and
families get their story
out.
Dramatization
A dramatization documentary
recreates the events using
actors portraying real people.
This allows the viewer to get a
better perspective.

Some Netflix shows have used

this technique as well as a lot of
true crime shows. This type of
documentary has sometimes
been known to cause
controversy.
Mockumentary
A mockumentary is a show
which is directed and shot the
same way as an ordinary
documentary, however the
events are fictional.

While mockumentary’s are

usually produced for comedic
purposes, they can still shine
a light on current issues,
often times using reactions
from the general public.
