Science 1 Module 10

This document provides information about different habitats: 1) It defines habitat as the place where plants and animals live, and identifies four main habitats: grasslands, ponds, arctic, and desert. 2) Each habitat is described, such as grasslands being grassy and warm, and ponds being wet and grassy. 3) Examples of animals that can be found in each habitat are given, such as lions in the grasslands and fish in ponds. 4) Readers are asked to classify examples of animals like frogs and camels into their respective habitats to demonstrate their understanding.

Discussion

A habitat is a place where plants and

animals live. In a habitat, animals can find the
food, homes, and water they need to live.
Plants need soil, rain, sunlight, and animals in
their habitats to live.

There are many kinds of habitats. Some

have lots of rain. Some are dry. Some places
are windy and others are cold.

Different plants and animals need different habitats to live. These

pictures show some kinds of habitats.

Kinds of Habitat

1. Grassland

• Grassy and warm

• Grasslands are dry, often flat areas of land
that are hot in the summer and cold in the
winter.
• They are wide expanses of land filled with
low growing plants such as grasses.
• Lions, tigers, and horses are some animals
Grassland
that live in the grassland.

2. Pond

• Wet and grassy

• Pond is usually smaller and shallower than
a lake. Because it is shallower than a lake,
ponds have plants growing on the bottom
of them from one side to the other.
• Fish, toads, frogs and ducks are some
Pond
animals that live in pond.

3. Arctic

• Cold and snowy

• Arctic is a cold area at the top of the Earth
above the Arctic Circle where certain
plants and animals live.
• Polar bears, white fox, and penguins are
some animals that live in Arctic.

4. Desert

• Hot and dry

• Desert is a very dry ecosystem. It can have
less rainfall in a year than.
• It can be hot by day, at night they can be
freezing cold.
• Scorpion, camel and antelope are some
Desert
animals that live in desert.

Animals use the plants living in their habitat for food. Some animals eat
other animals that live in the same habitat. Animals also use their habitat to
hide and sleep.

Animals such as moles dig tunnels in the soil to find food and shelter.
Some insects make their homes under rocks.

Different plants need different kinds of soil to live. Some plants grow in
sandy soil and some plants grow in rocky soil.

in sandy soil.

Plants that live in dry places can hold water. Plants that live in very wet
places can get rid of extra water. They have leaves that point down so water
can roll off them.
