WHAT IS THEATER?

1. Theatre is derived from the Greek word, “Theatron”, meaning a place of seeing.
2. It is an activity where interacting persons mimicking some action present themselves to
another group of persons. Two groups interact- the first group acts, the second watches-
where the first performs in an imagined time and space in a second.

QUALITIES OF THEATER:

1. Theater is Temporal (it exist in time)


2. Theater is Mimetic (it recreates human life)
3. Theater is Interpretative (it presents a point of view)
4. Theater is Integrated (it synthesizes the arts merging with the other Discipline)

UNDERSTANDING AND IMPORTANCE OF THEATER:

 Theater is a reflection of life.


 Theater was created to tell the truth about life.
 Theatre promotes social awareness.
 Theater has the power to transform an audience or an individual.
 Theatre opens the hearts, minds and changes lives.
 Theatre is the greatest of all arts.
 Theater prepares you to survive the challenges of life.

WHAT IS DRAMA?

1. The term “Drama” comes from a Greek word “Dran” meaning “To do or Action”, which is
derived from “I do”.
2. It is performed by actors on a stage before the audience
3. The broad term 'drama' covers a wide area of techniques incorporating physical movement,
vocal action, and mental concentration.
4. A play for theatre, radio, or television
5. An exciting, emotional, or unexpected series of events or set of circumstances
6. It is the specific mode of Fiction represented in performance: a Play, Opera, Mime, Ballet, etc,
performed in a theatre, or on radio or television.

FORMS OF DRAMA

1. Mime – is a form of drama where the action of a story is told only through the movement of
the body
2. Pantomime – it is a participatory form of theatre. It is a musical comedy stage production.
3. Opera – generally sung throughout
4. Musicals – include both spoken dialogues and songs
5. Closet Drama – is a form that is intended to be read, rather than performed.
6. Improvisation – the drama does not pre-exist the moment of performance and performers
devise a dramatic script spontaneously before an audience.
