Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

Lesson 1 – The Purpose of Prosperity

I. Genesis 12:1-3 – God’s Initial Promise to Abram

A. Genesis 12:2 – “I will bless you…and you shall be a blessing.”

1. In the beginning of dealing with His covenant people, God

reveals the purpose of blessing and prosperity.

2. His blessing in our lives is so we can have the opportunity

to be a blessing to others.

3. That is why the Bible says, “It is more blessed to give than
to receive.” – Acts 20:35

4. It is a greater blessing to be in a position to be able to give

to others than to be in a position of needing to receive
from others.

B. This covenant promise is the foundation for the Biblical concept of

blessing and prosperity.

1. Here we see God at work in the lives of His people to

counter the effects of the curse.

2. This covenant promise of blessing belongs to each one of

us who has received Christ by faith.

3. Galatians 3:29 – “And if you are Christ’s, then you are

Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.”

4. Galatians 3:9 – “So then those who are of faith are blessed
with believing Abraham.”

1 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

5. Qualifiers to be blessed and to be a blessing:

a. Be in Christ and in faith that the blessing belongs to

you.

b. Too many born-again Christians exempt themselves

from the promise of blessing because of past
experience, sin, insecurity, feeling of unworthiness,
or what others might think of them.

c. Though the promise of blessing belongs to us, it

must be appropriated by faith.

II. Deuteronomy 8 – Another Look at God’s Promise and

Purpose of Blessing and Prosperity for His Covenant People

A. Deuteronomy 8:7, 9 – “For the Lord your God is bringing you into
a good land…a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity,
in which you will lack nothing.”

1. No lack and no need!

B. Deuteronomy 8:18 – “And you shall remember the Lord your

God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may
establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is
this day.”

1. This is, first of all, a promise of grace to create wealth to

each of us in covenant with Him.

2. The power to get wealth is the grace to create it.

3. The key to entering into it is our agreement and response

of faith.

2 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

a. I have the grace to create wealth to fulfill God’s

promise to me in Genesis 12, and I will be blessed to
be a blessing to others.

4. Secondly, this verse reveals God’s purpose for blessing His

covenant people with this grace to create wealth:

5. Establish His covenant.

a. Finance the gospel and any ministries that are

bringing people into a covenant relationship with the
Living God.

b. Give generously to those churches or ministries that

are reaching the lost, bringing them to Jesus, and
establishing people in the faith.

c. The purpose of prosperity is for establishing His

covenant and His Word in the hearts of men.

d. How much of your wealth or abundance is being

used for its God-ordained purpose?

e. If we don’t understand the purpose of a thing,

abuse, neglect, and failure are the result.

III. II Corinthians 9:8-10 – New Testament Definition of

Prosperity

A. II Corinthians 9:8 – God’s grace is abounding toward you to

prosper you.

1. Blessing belongs at your house.

2. It is unnecessary to chase after blessing.

3 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

3. God has ordained blessing to overtake you (Deuteronomy

28:2).

B. Always having all sufficiency in all things

1. II Corinthians 9:10 – Bread for your food

2. Always having enough to meet your needs

3. One of the biggest fears we face is not having enough.

4. God says the first priority of prosperity is to meet your

needs.

5. God’s grace and heavenly resources never run out.

C. Possess an abundance for every good work.

1. A giving account similar to a savings or vacation account.

2. We are not prospering according to the Bible definition of

prosperity until our needs are met and we have surplus for
the purpose of blessing others and advancing the Kingdom.

3. If you are content just to believe God for your needs being
met alone, you are a selfish human being!

4. It is scriptural to ask God to provide for your needs and a

supply to give from – enough and extra!

5. Whenever you are faced with a need, ask God for double –
enough and extra – and reinforce the devil’s defeat twice!

6. II Corinthians 9:10 – God gives seed to sowers.

a. If your desire to prosper is focused on you – your

needs and wants only – you are missing the purpose
of prosperity.

4 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

b. When you develop a heart to give, God will get seed

to you.

c. We were created in God’s image, and He is a giver!

7. II Corinthians 9:11-14 – Our giving not only meets the

needs of saints but also releases thanksgiving, glorifies
God, models generosity, and causes others’ prayers to go
up for us.

8. One of the best places to learn to hear God is in the area of

your finances.

9. Develop sensitivity to God about money by practicing

discerning what part of your income is seed to sow and
what part is bread to meet your needs.

D. II Corinthians 8:7 – “But as you abound in everything – in faith,

in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us –
see that you abound in this grace also.”

1. This grace of giving and receiving

2. This grace of making room in your heart to be blessed so

you can be a blessing – This is not an option!

IV. I Chronicles 4:9-10 – Story of Jabez

A. In the midst of a long list of family genealogies and related

inheritances, the story of Jabez is inserted in this portion of God’s
Word.

1. It was not an accident or coincidence that he was

mentioned in this context.

5 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

2. Something must have occurred with his father that brought

shame to his family and caused him to lose his inheritance
and covenant blessing.

a. The father passes on the family blessing.

3. Jabez’ brothers were following in their father’s footsteps.

B. Jabez was different, and He called on the covenant-keeping God

to reverse the curse in his life.

1. “Bless me indeed.”

a. “I don’t just want hope of the promise but the real

blessing that you promised others who are
Abraham’s seed – the real thing.”

b. “Bless me that I might be a blessing.”

c. “Help me become a producer, not just a consumer;

a giver, not a user and a taker.”

2. “Enlarge my territory.”

a. “Give me land, possessions, and inheritance.”

b. A base from which I can bless others

3. “Your hand with me” – Favor, grace, and anointing

4. “Keep me from evil (bondage and sin) that I might not

cause pain.”

a. “Help me not to pass down this pain to others –

especially my children.”

5. “So, God granted him what he requested.”

C. And so He will for you!

6 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 1

1. No matter how your parents or family tree have dishonored

God, or what your past experience has been, or even what
bad decisions you have made, you can still enter into the
blessing of this prayer.

2. God has blessing and inheritance for you yet.

D. II Corinthians 8:12

1. “If there is a willing mind, the gift is acceptable according

to what one has, not according to what he does not have.”

7 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 2

Lesson 2 – Overcoming a Spirit of Poverty

I. Review of the Purpose of Prosperity

A. Genesis 12:2 – “I will bless you …and you shall be a blessing.”

1. If you are Christ’s, then this promise belongs to you. –

Galatians 3:29

B. Deuteronomy 8:18 – “…it is He (God) who gives you power to get

wealth, that He may establish His covenant in the earth.”

1. Each of us has been given grace to create wealth so that

we may participate in establishing His covenant in the
hearts of men in the earth.

2. The purpose of prosperity is that you be blessed so you

can be a channel of blessing to others.

3. “Dead sea” prosperity and wealth is not Biblical prosperity.

4. Have you made room in your heart for blessing to flow

through you?

5. God can get it to you if He can get it through you!

II. Overcoming the Spirit of Poverty

A. Proverbs 10:15 – “The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the
destruction of the poor is their poverty.”

1. The rich man’s strength and protection (strong city) from

poverty is not just his present financial condition, but that
he sees himself wealthy.

8 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 2

a. A spirit of prosperity rules this man’s heart.

2. Likewise, the poor man’s destruction is not just his present

condition of lack, but that he sees himself poor.

a. A spirit of poverty rules this man’s heart.

3. Whatever spirit rules our heart determines the fruit we will

consistently experience in our lives.

B. You might have a spirit of poverty controlling your life if…

1. You break into cold sweats whenever there is a downturn

in the economy or you receive a negative financial report.

2. Your close friends call you Scrooge, tightwad, or a

pessimist.

3. Murphy’s law is more real to you than God’s Word.

4. You are constantly complaining about how much things

cost.

5. You are always trying to get things for less or for free.

6. You are holding on to and hoarding things you should be

letting go of.

7. The blessing and good fortune of others bothers you.

8. What others think about what you drive, where you live,
and what you wear is a big deal to you.

9. You are obsessed with success and the accumulation of

stuff.

10. You feel secure only if you have a certain amount of money
in the bank.

9 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 2

C. It is our assignment as ministers from the Head of the church to

eradicate the spirit of poverty from the mindset, actions, and
finances of God’s people!

1. Luke 4:18 – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He

has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.”

2. We cannot do that with confidence if we are allowing a

spirit of poverty to rule our hearts and lives.

3. You can be a tither, a hard worker, have money in the

bank, and still be controlled by a spirit of poverty.

4. It is possible to be poor and have a generous spirit.

5. It is also possible to be wealthy and stingy because a spirit

of poverty is ruling your heart.

III. Revisit the Bible’s Definition of Prosperity – II Corinthians

9:8

A. “You always having all sufficiency in all things…”

1. Always having enough in every situation!

2. We must give attention to this and meditate on it until it

becomes real to us – enough and extra!

3. The spirit of poverty paints an entirely different picture on

the canvas of our hearts:

a. There’s not enough in any situation.

b. There’s not enough money, favor, scholarships,

housing, room, time, smarts, wisdom, talent, good
paying jobs, strength, health, help, etc.

10 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 2

4. So, you’re left to yourself; whatever you can beg, borrow,

manipulate, pressure, scheme, steal, or work yourself to
death to get.

5. That is why some people have such a hard time letting go

of anything.

a. They worked so hard to get it and have no hope of

restoring it without a similar output of personal
energy.

6. Romans 4:4 – “Now to him who works, the wages are not
counted as grace but as debt.”

7. Prosperity: “God is able to make all grace abound toward

you.”

8. Question: How do you see yourself and your situation?

Enough or not enough?

B. Have an abundance for every good work.

1. This does not fit into the mindset and framework of

thinking of someone controlled by a spirit of poverty.

2. A poverty mentality will first feather his own nest, make

sure his nest egg has been achieved and financial comfort
zone has been protected.

3. Then, he can give a little bit to charity but never beyond

his comfort zone.

4. A poverty mentality toward giving is tipping.

5. They tip God, tip the poor, tip various charities to impress
others or feel better about themselves.

6. Mark 12:41 – Jesus watches how people give.

11 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 2

7. The widow giving all she had gave a greater gift in Jesus’
mind than those who gave out of their abundance.

8. The way Jesus measures the size of the gift is by the

percentage, not the amount.

9. An abundant gift for a good work that stretches one’s

comfort zone is rarely considered, much less given, by one
ruled by a spirit of poverty.

10. Why? A fear of lack.

C. Personal testimony

D. Jesus’ pattern of leadership for facing lack – John 6

1. He recognized the need. – John 6:5

2. He involved others in the process. – John 6:6-11

3. He did not allow the need and apparent lack to either rule
His heart or thinking or to dictate the final outcome. – John
6:7-9

a. He exalted the truth - what He knew about His

Father and His trust in His Father’s care and
provision - above the facts that it looked like there
was not enough.

4. He asked the people to do something – involved their faith

and action in looking to God and sitting down in order. –
John 6:10

5. He used what He had: five loaves and two fish. – John 6:9,
11

6. He gave thanks for it, instead of cursing it. – John 6:11

12 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 2

a. Far too many times, we curse or become ungrateful

for the provision we have because it seems like it is
not enough to meet the need.

b. Then we miss out on the opportunity for God to

multiply it and make a miracle provision from it.

7. He gave out of it. – John 6:11

a. He distributed from a position of apparent lack.

b. There is always something we have available to give

that keeps us from giving in to a spirit of poverty.

c. Set up a giving account to sow out of.

d. Whenever the enemy attacks you with lack ask God

for the need plus an equal amount to sow with –
prosperity mindset!

8. He stewarded the results and people believed on Him. –

John 6:12-14

Lesson 3 – Developing Right Attitudes Toward Money – Part I

I. Hindrances and Right Attitudes

A. III John 2 - There are several hindrances that need to be

removed and right attitudes that need to be developed in order to
walk in the fullness of Biblical Prosperity:

Hindrances Right Attitudes

A. Blindness The Father’s care for us

B. Fear Trust

C. Covetousness Contentment

D. Impulsiveness Patience

E. Stinginess Generosity

F. Laziness Diligence

G. Ownership Stewardship

H. The love of money Choosing relationships over money

II. The First Hindrance to Prosperity is blindness or Limited

Vision

A. Failure to see who God is and what kind of Father we have

B. This is usually a result of family or life experiences:

14 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 3

1. You may have been raised in a very performance driven or

works-oriented environment where you grew to believe
you could never do enough to earn your father’s favor.

2. Or you may have been brought up on “barely get by

street” right next to “hand me down avenue” – a place of
poverty or lack.

3. Or you may have experienced some financial failure you

allowed to become greater in your mind than God’s
promise of provision and blessing to you.

C. Too many of us have allowed our experiences to shape our view

of God and His willingness to shower us with favor and blessing.

III. The First Right Attitude Toward Money We Need to Develop

Is A Personal Revelation of The Father’s Care For Us

A. Psalms 35:27 – “…let them say continually, let the Lord be

magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.”

1. If His servant, how much more His sons and daughters?

2. The word prosperity here in Hebrew is “shalom.”

3. It means well, happy, friendly, healthy, favored, at peace.

4. If our own children’s welfare, success, favor, and peace

give us pleasure, how much more God with His children –
you and I?

B. One of the Lord’s names is “El Shaddai.”

1. It means more than enough supply – the many breasted

One!

2. He never runs out of provision for His children.

15 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 3

3. Jesus saw His Father in this light and it gave Him faith to:

a. Turn water into wine at a wedding where they ran

out of wine.

b. Feed the 5,000 plus women and children with five

loaves and two fish (supply that was grossly
inadequate).

c. Heal the lepers, the lame, the paralytics – those

beyond medical help.

4. If you know your Father loves you and His resources are
unlimited, your days of lack are over.

5. You must get a vision inside you of being favored, blessed,

and adequately provided for because of your Father, not
your job or your bank statement.

C. I Timothy 5:8 – God is not an infidel. He provides well for His

own.

D. Galatians 5:6 – Faith works best when you understand you are
loved.

E. Matthew 6:26 – Look at the birds: they have no jobs or savings

accounts, yet your Father provides abundantly for them.

1. His love and care for you is infinitely greater!

2. Meditating on His great care for you will increase your faith
for abundant provision – Galatians 5:6

IV. Another Major Hindrance to Experiencing Prosperity is Fear

A. II Timothy 1:7 – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of
power and of love and of a sound mind.”

16 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 3

1. The greatest fear related to money is the fear of not having

enough.

2. The spirit of poverty both fuels and feeds off of this fear.

3. This fear has no respect of persons; it affects the rich and

poor, the educated and uneducated, ten-talent people and
one-talent people alike.

4. Our understanding of our Father’s love and care for us will

help us to overcome this deceiving and devouring enemy.

5. I John 4:18 – “There is no fear in love; but perfect love

casts out fear…”

B. Genesis 15:1 – “After these things the word of the Lord came to
Abram in a vision, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your
shield, your exceedingly great reward.’”

1. What were these things that Abram was tempted to get

into fear over?

2. Abram had just tithed (Genesis 14:20) and had just left
money or reward on the table that could have been
construed as trusting in men instead of God for his
provision.

3. God was saying, “Don’t fear loss or lack when you obey Me
with your finances, Abram.”

4. It is not what you hold on to that protects you from lack,

but what you give in obedience: your tithe, your offerings,
your trust in Me.

5. I Am your Shield from poverty and lack and I Am your

Reward; I will reward you exceedingly whenever you trust

17 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 3

Me and follow Me as you have with your money and

possessions.

V. The Attitude to Develop Toward Money That Will

Counteract Fear is Trust

A. The real issue with our tithing and giving is not our money, but
our trust.

1. If you are still looking at your tithing and your giving as a

loss (waving good-bye to it like you’ll never see it again),
you are not yet trusting.

2. It is possible to tithe and give consistently and still not

trust.

3. If you are giving out of obligation or out of fear (that if you

don’t give your finances will be cursed), you are not
trusting.

4. God wants our hearts, not just our money.

5. Our attitude toward money reveals our hearts and who or

what we are trusting.

B. Matthew 6:21 – “For where your treasure is, there your heart will
be also.”

1. God knows that He only has your heart when He becomes

your treasure instead of your money, bank account, or
possessions.

2. Your treasure is what you trust – what you depend on to

get you by – people, money, education, talent,
manipulation, or God.

18 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 3

3. If your heart is tied to something else or someone else that

you are depending on more than God, you’ll find that He
will require that of you.

a. Example: Rich young ruler – Mark 10:21-22

4. Psalms 62:10 – “Do not trust in oppression, nor vainly

hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart
on them.”

5. Proverbs 11:28 – “He who trusts in his riches will fall, but
the righteous will flourish like foliage.”

6. I Timothy 6:17 – “Command those who are rich in this

present age not to be haughty, not to trust in uncertain
riches but in the living God who gives us richly all things to
enjoy.”

7. I Kings 17:8-16 – Story of widow of Zarephath who trusted

the Lord through the word of the prophet and overcame
famine.

8. Psalms 34:22 – “None of them that trust in Him shall be

desolate.”

C. Trust is developed through greater intimacy and knowledge of the

Lord and by experiencing His faithfulness.

19 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 4

Lesson 4 – Developing Right Attitudes Towards Money – Part II

I. Review Hindrances That Need to Be Removed and Right

Attitudes That Need to Be Developed in Order to Walk in
Biblical Prosperity:

Hindrances Right Attitudes

A. Blindness The Father’s care for us

B. Fear Trust

II. The Next Hindrance to Prosperity is Covetousness

A. Exodus 20:17 – “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you
shall not covet your neighbor’s wife…nor his ox, nor his donkey,
nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

1. Covetousness defined: to long for, set the heart on, lust

after, to plunder by fraudulence, extortion, or unjust gain.

2. Jeremiah 6:12-13 – Covetousness brings opposition from

God and sets the heart toward dealing falsely with others.

3. Luke 12:15-21 – Covetousness causes deception.

4. Colossians 3:5 – Covetousness is idolatry (idol worship)

Not good!

B. James 4:1-4 – “You lust and do not have…”

1. Whatever you are lusting for has you. You don’t have it.

20 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 4

2. Whatever we covet and lust for we are never able to

possess.

3. It is all right to ask for provision and possessions as long

as you look to God and not to men.

III. Contentment is the Antidote for Covetousness and the Next

Heart Attitude We Need to Develop Toward Money

A. Philippians 4:11-12 – “…for I have learned in whatever state I

am, to be content.”

1. Contentment is a learned behavior or attitude.

2. This is an attitude that can operate in us irrespective of our

present financial condition.

3. Paul did not allow his circumstance or the lack of support

from others to either redirect his trust or shape his
attitude.

B. Very interesting definition of contentment: raising a barrier to

ward off; like a shield.

1. Contentment is a barrier or shield for us to ward off

covetousness.

2. My trust in God’s care and provision for me especially in

the face of lack is my protection from covetousness.

3. Contentment involves exalting the truth above the facts

when tempted to yield to covetousness to achieve financial
gain.

C. I Timothy 6:5 – Financial status or gain is never the standard of

measurement for spirituality or godliness in our lives.

21 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 4

1. I Timothy 6:6 – Rather godliness with contentment is great

gain – both spiritually and financially.

2. There are many temptations to yield to covetousness

under the cloak of using financial gain to accomplish
spiritual purposes.

3. Examples:

a. “Just think how much more that I could give to the

church, missions, and the work of God if I get
involved with this deal.”

b. “God will understand that I have to miss church on

Sundays to take that second job so my family can
experience the abundant life the pastor has been
preaching about.”

c. “It won’t bother God if I tell a little ‘white lie’ to win

this new client. Besides, He knows that my tithe will
be larger.”

D. Hebrews 13:5 – “Let your conduct (life) be without

covetousness.”

1. How? “…be content with such things as you have.”

2. Knowing: “He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor
forsake you.”

3. He will not leave us in a place of lack or want.

4. “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

IV. Another Primary Hindrance to Prosperity is Impulsiveness

A. Flesh-led, emotion-led, instead of Spirit-led

22 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 4

1. Romans 8:5-6 – Being led by the flesh results in death.

2. Being led by the Spirit produces life and peace.

3. Romans 8:14 – Mature sons have learned how to keep

their flesh under and follow the Spirit of God.

B. Isaiah 48:17 – “I am the Lord your God who teaches you to

profit, who leads you by the way you should go.”

1. A major key to walking in Biblical prosperity is being led by

the Spirit in financial decisions instead of giving authority
to your emotions/flesh.

2. God will teach you to profit if you follow His Spirit.

3. Example: Elijah had to go to the brook Cherith and to the

widow at Zarephath at the instruction of the Lord to find
his provision.

4. There are some stubborn, impulsive, and broke Christians

who are sitting at the wrong brook and hanging around the
wrong crowd because they have been emotion-led/flesh-
led.

C. Oxymoron: Biblical prosperity and impulsiveness in finances

1. Learn to wait on God and not follow whatever whim hits

your flesh.

2. Example: Most of us have had children who at some time

have had a severe case of the “I wanna’s.”

a. Pressuring us to buy something for them that may

not be what is best for them or we cannot buy for
them until they have learned to keep selfishness
under control.

23 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 4

3. God has some children who have a similar case of the “I

wanna’s” who have not learned how to keep their flesh
under.

4. Proverbs 14:29 – “…he who is impulsive exalts folly

(makes foolish decisions).

5. Impulsiveness is one of the biggest thieves of the provision

of the Father from His children today.

a. Preys on Christians who can’t wait to get new

furniture, electronics, automobiles, homes, etc.

b. Personal example – Gift of T-Bird (with payments).

V. Overcome Impulsiveness With Patience

A. One of the primary characteristics of God’s voice is patience.

1. Isaiah 28:16 – “…whoever believes will not act hastily.”

2. Patience doesn’t come by praying for it but by drawing on

His nature – the fruit of the Spirit – which is in you and is
patient.

3. Confess the truth that you have patience and you are a
patient person instead of the fact (lie) that agrees with
your flesh.

4. Pressure is a bad sign – It is not from the Holy Ghost!

a. There will always be another car, house, blessing,

good deal, job, ministry opportunity, or whatever
you need to accomplish the will of God at the right
time.

24 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 4

b. God’s blessings do not cause us to compromise Bible

principles or act out of character with His nature.

5. When you learn to wait on God, He will work things out for
you.

B. Jesus did not allow people, including friends and relatives, to

pressure Him.

1. John 7:3-6 – “My time has not yet come, but your time is
always ready.”

2. Jesus did not allow others to determine His course, but He

followed God’s timing.

3. John 11:1-6 – “So when He heard that he (Lazarus) was

sick…”

a. Your response: ___________________

b. “…He stayed two more days in the place where He

was.”

4. I Peter 1:11 – Search both what and what manner of time

the Spirit indicates – you can know both the what and the
timing.

5. Proverbs 10:22 – “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and

He adds no sorrow to it.” – Prosperity without grief!

Lesson 5 – Hindrances to Prosperity – Part I

I. Review Hindrances That Need to Be Removed and Right

Attitudes That Need to Be Developed in Order to Walk in
Biblical Prosperity:

Hindrances Right Attitudes

A. Blindness The Father’s care for us

B. Fear Trust

C. Covetousness Contentment

D. Impulsiveness Patience

II. Another Major Hindrance to Prosperity is ____________

A. Proverbs 11:24 – “There is one who scatters, yet increases more;

and there is one who withholds more than is right, but it leads to
poverty.”

1. You’ve met him. Maybe you’ve even been him at one time:
Mr. Scrooge, tight wad, stingy, mangy, greedy gut.

2. He is the person who makes you beg for every dollar and
makes you feel guilty about spending it afterwards.

3. He still owns the first dollar he ever made (rather it owns

him).

4. He may have money, but he/she is ruled by the spirit of

poverty (the fear of not having enough).

26 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 5

5. Proverbs 13:7 – “There is one who makes himself rich, yet

has nothing.”

6. Riches are never intended to stop with just you; we are not
intended to become a Dead Sea!

7. Proverbs 11:26 – “The people will curse him who withholds

grain.”

a. God intended that His blessings to us also be used to

bless others, not just ourselves – that is real
prosperity!

b. Stinginess and selfishness is how blessing turns into

a curse.

B. I Samuel 25:2-12 – Story of Nabal: Scrooges’ great-great-great-

great-great grandfather

1. I Samuel 25:2 – Nabal was very rich. He was so rich if he

gave what most would consider a lavish gift, he would
never have missed it.

2. I Samuel 25:5-7 – David and his men had been a

protection and blessing to Nabal’s men (his shepherds and
shearers).

3. I Samuel 25:8-9 – David’s men requested food and

sustenance from Nabal that he could afford to give out of
his abundance.

4. I Samuel 25:10-11 – Nabal refused David’s request and

accused David of betrayal of Saul.

5. It is quite common for the stingy and selfish to attempt to

spiritually justify their failure to give and to bless others.

27 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 5

6. I Samuel 25:17, 25 – Nabal’s name and identity with

others meant infidel (unbeliever) and fool.

7. It is foolish and unbelieving to be stingy or hold a tight grip

on your money and possessions.

8. I Samuel 25:37-38 – His tightness of soul, stinginess, and

selfishness with his possessions affected him physically and
resulted in his death.

a. The result of stinginess and selfishness is never

good.

C. I Corinthians 10:24 – “Let no one seek his own, but each one the
other’s well-being (welfare).”

1. Philippians 2:4 – “Let each of you look out not only for his
own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

2. We truly are our brother’s keeper.

3. Focusing on yourself will stop the flow of blessing in your

life.

III. Overcome Stinginess by Developing an Attitude of

Generosity

A. Proverbs 11:25 – “The generous soul will be made rich, and he

who waters will also be watered himself.”

1. “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the

firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled
with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.” –
Proverbs 3:9-10

28 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 5

2. “He has dispersed abroad, he has given to the poor; his

righteousness endures forever; his horn will be exalted
with honor.” Psalms 112:9

3. Generous people are blessed, influential, eternity-minded,

anointed, and respected people.

4. Men and women of faith are generous people.

B. Abraham was an excellent example of a man of faith who had a

generous spirit; he was a giver, not a taker.

1. Genesis 13:8-12 – Abraham placed his relationship with

Lot over his own personal gain.

2. He allowed Lot to choose the best land.

3. One of the best ways to defeat selfishness and stinginess

in your life is to choose relationships over material gain.

4. Genesis 13:14-17 – After Abraham made that sacrifice,

God spoke to him about his inheritance which was far
greater than anything he had given to Lot.

5. Abraham was blessed because he gave; Lot was not

because he chose for himself – Genesis 13:13

6. Abraham was ultimately generous with God.

7. Genesis 22:12 – “And He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on

the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you
fear God since you have not withheld your son, your only
son, from Me.”

C. II Corinthians 8:2, 5 – The real key to generosity is giving

yourself to the Lord first.

1. Ask Him to make you a blessing; a giver and not a taker.

29 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 5

2. John 3:16 – “God so loved that He gave [us] His best.”

3. His very nature is a giving and generous nature.

4. We were made in His image, partakers of His divine

nature; therefore, by nature we are givers. – II Peter 1:4

5. II Corinthians 9:11 – “…you are enriched in everything for

all liberality, which caused thanksgiving through us to
God.”

6. The purpose for God’s blessing in our lives is not only to

meet our needs – II Corinthians 9:10 - but also to be
generous toward every good work that He places on our
heart.

7. Generous people produce thanksgiving to God in others.

Lesson 6 – Hindrances to Prosperity – Part II

I. Review Hindrances That Need to Be Removed and Right

Attitudes That Need to Be Developed in Order to Walk in
Biblical Prosperity:

Hindrances Right Attitudes

A. Blindness The Father’s care for us

B. Fear Trust

C. Covetousness Contentment

D. Impulsiveness Patience

E. Stinginess Generosity

II. Another Major Hindrance and Enemy to Prosperity is

Laziness

A. Another word that is used interchangeably with lazy is slothful.

1. Slothful defined: to slacken, cease, be idle, slow hesitate,

tardy, sluggish, lazy, dull

2. Sloth in Webster’s Dictionary: a slow moving, tree-dwelling

South American mammal

3. I’ve met some North American sloths – even one or two in

the church.

a. Example: Junior Samples on Hee Haw

31 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 6

4. God promised to prosper what we set our hand to, not

what we sit on – Deuteronomy 28:8; Psalms 1:3

5. Example: God supernaturally provided manna for the

children of Israel, but they still had to go out each day and
gather it in.

B. Scripture references to laziness

1. Proverbs 19:15 – “Laziness casts one into a deep sleep

(spiritual slumber), and an idle person will suffer hunger.”

a. Laziness starts with an attitude of the heart that

manifests in inactivity and lack.

2. Proverbs 20:4 – “The lazy man will not plow because of

winter; he will beg during harvest and have nothing.”

a. The lazy man always has an excuse for not working,

but his excuses never produce anything.

b. The irony is that he ends up working the begging

circuit.

3. Proverbs 18:9 – “He who is slothful in his work is a brother

to him who is a great destroyer (waster).”

a. Laziness destroys potential and wastes talent.

b. God has called us to be producers, not just

consumers.

4. Titus 2:9-10 – Not talking back to or holding back from

your employer.

a. Give your employer more than what he paid for: a

full day’s work, 110% effort, a good attitude, and
loyalty - no talking back or talking behind his back.

32 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 6

b. This is one of the ways we can adorn the gospel of

God before others.

5. Proverbs 24:30-34 – Laziness and lack of understanding

are direct causes of poverty.

C. Reasons for laziness:

1. No sense of purpose

a. Purpose and destiny energizes and motivates us to

action.

2. A sense of inadequacy

a. Doubting the grace of God in you.

3. Fear of failure

a. This person does not want to accept the

responsibility or blame for a mistake or bad decision,
so he/she does not make many decisions with much
level of risk.

b. This individual is famous for procrastination

important decisions.

c. Example of the one talent man in Matthew 25: who

hid his talent in a hole in the ground – he refused to
take a risk.

d. Jesus described this attitude as “wicked and lazy.”

Matthew 25:26

e. There are two kinds of people in life: those who get

things done and those who want to be right.

III. Overcome Laziness by Developing an Attitude of Diligence

33 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 6

A. Romans 12:11 – “not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit,

serving the Lord.

1. KJV – “not slothful in business…”

2. Would to God that more Christians would become diligent,

passionate, and excellent in their service to the Lord and
their business dealings, including their handling of money.

3. As opposed to being passive, fatalistic, and indifferent in

attitude and service.

4. How we handle our business affairs affects our testimony

with the lost and unchurched. – I Timothy 3:7

B. Diligence defined: to be alert, determined, sharp, precise

1. “An important kingdom combination to success in any area

of life is obedience and focus.” – Tony Miller

2. Divided focus drains off energy and vision.

3. Example: The secret of the power of a laser beam is

focused light.

4. I Timothy 4:14-15 – “Do not neglect the gift that is in

you…Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to
them, that your progress (success) may be evident to all.”

5. The problem most of us have is that we attempt to give

ourselves entirely to everything and we end up
accomplishing nothing.

6. “Many leaders operate under the assumption that they

need to upgrade their weaknesses into strengths.” – Andy
Stanley

34 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 6

7. The real value you provide to the organization you serve

lies within the context of your strongest and most
developed gifts, not just the number of hours you work.

8. What are the two or three things that define your success
and that add the most value to your organization?

9. Focus your energy (be diligent) in that direction and your

business and/or ministry will flourish!

10. Your weakness is someone else’s opportunity.

C. Diligence in dealing with problems:

1. Answer a complex problem by doing the next thing, not by

trying to figure out how to do the thing after the next
thing.

2. The devil uses the pile-up method to discourage us,

confuse us and paralyze us – lead us into inactivity and
away from diligence or focused Kingdom activity.

3. The response of the diligent to these attacks: “I may not

know the answer or how to unravel this complicated
situation, but I can do this (the next thing, the one thing I
know to do).”

4. The diligent are resolved that they will not allow the enemy
to paralyze them or stop their obedience and therefore
they are always successful people.

D. Greg Mohr’s definition of diligence: Focused and persistent

obedience or effort that is consistent with your strengths, gifts,
and calling.

1. That is what Paul was telling Timothy to do in I Timothy

4:14-15.

35 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 6

2. Give a focused effort (give yourself entirely) in a persistent

way on the area you are most gifted.

3. That is diligence and that is what will bring about your

success.

E. The benefits of this principle and attitude of diligence:

1. Proverbs 10:4 – “He who has a slack hand becomes poor,

but the hand of the diligent (one who makes a focused and
persistent effort in line with his gifts, talent, and calling)
makes rich.”

2. Proverbs 12:24 – “The hand of the diligent will rule, but

the lazy man will be put to forced labor.”

3. Proverbs 21:5 – “The plans of the diligent lead surely to

plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to
poverty.”

a. If you are diligent you will see and seize

opportunities others fail to see.

II. A Major Enemy to Prosperity that Most Don’t Consider is an

Ownership Mentality Toward Finances and Material
Possessions

A. It is very important for us to have a clear understanding of who

the owner and boss is in order for us to be successful in life.

B. Genesis 1:31 – God created everything and, therefore, He is the

owner of all things.

1. Psalms 24:1 – “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,
the world and those who dwell therein.”

2. Haggai 2:8 – “The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says
the Lord of hosts.”

3. This is His program that He set up that we are privileged to

participate in.

C. Genesis 1:26; 2:8,15 – Man’s part is to steward (tend and keep)

what God created and owns.

1. Whenever we get those roles reversed or mixed up, we

end up messed up and asking God why or blaming God.

2. Ownership and entitlement attitudes dominate the business

culture and even some areas of the church.

a. My ministry, my rights, my agenda, my money, etc.

3. That is not the culture of the Kingdom of God!

4. Jesus claimed ownership of the church when He said, “…I

will build My church…”

5. God declares that His laborers/stewards must build His

house according to His plan or their labor will be in vain. –
Psalms 127:1

6. Psalms 49:10,17 – “…the fool and the senseless person

perish, and leave their wealth to others…for when he dies
he shall carry nothing away.”

7. Each of us is a steward, not an owner, for a brief period of

time on this earth that constitutes a training time and
dress rehearsal for eternity. – James 4:14

8. How well we manage the owner’s gifts, talents, resources,

and time will determine our eternal reward. – I Corinthians
3:10-15

38 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 7

III. The Right Heart Attitude to Develop Toward Finances and

Material Possessions is Stewardship

A. True stewardship begins with the foundational belief that God is

the source of all that has been entrusted to me.

1. Each one of my gifts, talents, resources, possessions, and

even my very breath is a gift from God.

2. Therefore, all that I have is God’s and I am simply a

manager who has been entrusted with His resources.

3. A good manager will be diligent to handle God’s resources

according to His instructions in the Word.

4. You will deal with finances differently when you look at the
money in your possession as God’s and not yours.

5. Developing a stewardship mindset toward finances will

produce peace and security and cause you to be wise and
responsible in your handling of money.

6. A steward is one who handles the affairs of another.

7. Failure to steward God’s money after God’s instructions is

a primary cause of financial problems among God’s people.

B. Parable of the unjust steward – Luke 16

1. Luke 16:1-8 – The context is stewardship of an owner’s

money and possessions.

2. The master commended the unjust servant not for his

deceptive scheme of extortion but for using money to
prepare for the future.

39 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 7

3. Luke 16:9 – Jesus is telling us to likewise make money our

friend by investing in eternal things, and thereby preparing
others and ourselves for the future coming Kingdom.

4. Luke 16:10 – Jesus tells us here that money is the least

thing and the first thing that we must learn to steward in
the Kingdom.

a. In order for us to steward money faithfully we must

acknowledge that God is the source and owner of
our money too.

b. Following the instructions He has given us in His

Word about the handling of finances is how we
demonstrate our faithfulness in stewardship and our
trust in Him as our source.

5. Luke 16:11 – Jesus makes a remarkable statement here:

that the degree of faithfulness that we demonstrate in our
stewardship of finances will determine the measure of true
riches (eternal souls) that are committed to our trust.

a. Tithing is the first step of financial stewardship and

trust!

b. When we fail to trust God with this first step of

stewardship, we rob Him of the opportunity to pour
out His fullest blessing in our lives. – Malachi 3:8-12

c. We also stop ourselves from Kingdom promotion. –

Malachi 3:12

C. Important stewardship keys:

1. Stewardship is protecting and growing the owner’s assets

with passion and commitment.

40 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 7

a. Luke 19:16-17 – “Then came the first, saying, Lord,

thy pound hath gained ten pounds. And he said unto
him, well, thou good servant: because thou hast
been faithful in a very little, have thou authority
over ten cities.”

2. Successful stewardship is built on the foundation of trust

and integrity.

a. Proverbs 11:1 – “A false balance is abomination to

the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.”

3. Successful stewards welcome evaluation and

accountability, understanding these will make him a better
steward.

a. Luke 19:15 – “And it came to pass, that when he

was returned, having received the kingdom, then he
commanded these servants to be called unto him, to
whom he had given the money, that he might know
how much every man had gained by trading.”

4. Successful stewards are passionate about faithfulness,

persevering through the difficult times as well as the good.

a. I Corinthians 4:2 – “Moreover it is required in

stewards that a man be found faithful.”

5. Successful stewards perform their work for their earthly

owners as to the Lord.

a. Ephesians 6:7 – “With good will doing service, as to

the Lord, and not to men.”

6. The only motivation successful stewards need to perform

their tasks is the opportunity to please the owner.

41 REV 12.10.2018

a. Hebrews 13:16-17 – “But to do good and to

communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God
is well pleased. Obey them that have the rule over
you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your
souls, as they that must give account, that they may
do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is
unprofitable for you.”

7. Promotion in stewardship is determined by how we

manage the small things we are entrusted with.

a. Matthew 25:21 – “Well done, good and faithful

servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will
make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy
of your Lord.” (see also Luke16:12)

D. I Chronicles 29:10-16 – David knew that all of the abundance he

had was from God’s hand and was actually His (God’s) own.

E. Genesis 14:18-15:1 – Abram saw God as His source, not himself;

therefore, he prospered.

I. Review Hindrances That Need to Be Removed and Right

Attitudes That Need to Be Developed in Order to Walk in
Biblical Prosperity:

Hindrances Right Attitudes

A. Blindness The Father’s care for us

B. Fear Trust

C. Covetousness Contentment

D. Impulsiveness Patience

E. Stinginess Generosity

F. Laziness Diligence

G. Ownership Stewardship

II. The Last Hindrance to Prosperity that we will Deal with is

the Love of Money

A. The love of money and covetousness are kin to one another.

B. Mark 4:19 makes a distinction between the two – “and the cares
of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires (lusts)
for other things entering in choke the Word, and it becomes
unfruitful.”

1. Covetousness is the heart lusting after material things.

43 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 8

2. The love of money is a result of the heart tolerating and

accepting the deceitfulness of riches as truth.

a. If you and I allow riches to determine our peace and

security, we are deceived.

b. Our bank statement can never become a measure of

our spiritual condition. – I Timothy 6:5-6

c. Many wealthy people allow their riches to give them

a false sense of security and, therefore, feel no need
for God.

d. That is the deceitfulness of riches’ goal!

e. Revelation 3:16-17 – “So then, because you are

lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you
out of My mouth. Because you say, I am rich, have
become wealthy, and have need of nothing – and do
not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor,
blind, and naked.”

3. There is a danger if we allow our relationship with money

to become perverted.

a. The love of money (deceitfulness of riches) will

choke off the fruitfulness of the Word in our hearts.
– Mark 4:19

b. Proverbs 1:32 – “…and the prosperity of fools shall

destroy them (because they have allowed their
wealth to make them spiritually complacent).”

C. I Timothy 6:9-10 – A description of the wrong kind of relationship

with money.

44 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 8

1. It results in deception, destruction, straying from the faith

and great sorrow.

2. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

3. Psalms 97:10 – “You who love the Lord, hate evil!”

4. Proverbs 8:13 – “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.”

5. Since we are called to hate evil and the love of money is a

root of all kinds of evil, we must learn to develop a hatred
for the love of money.

6. That means it is imperative that we make the love of

money our enemy, not our friend.

7. III John 11 – “Follow not that which is evil…”

a. Don’t follow the love of money.

b. Rather hate it and follow the love of God.

III. The Right Attitude to Develop that will Counteract the Love
of Money is Choosing Relationships Over Money

A. The love of money left alone will destroy relationships.

1. Jesus cleansed the temple of those who placed financial

gain over relationship with God and others. – John 2:13-17

2. We are the temple of God today.

3. He is still zealous for cleansing His present-day temples

from the love of money.

B. Love for God and love for people drives out the love of money
from the heart.

45 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 8

1. II Corinthians 8:1-7 – The Macedonian church first gave

themselves to the Lord and then to the apostles – Love for
God and love for people.

2. That heart attitude released them to abound in the grace

of giving.

3. Their love for God and for Paul and his team kept them
from being controlled by the love of money in their giving.

4. Matthew 6:33 – “But (instead of seeking after money and

your needs first) seek first the Kingdom of God, and His
righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

5. Matthew 6:24 – Love God and money will serve you; love
money and you will serve it!

C. You know you are relating with an individual around the love of
money when:

1. You look at them as a liability or what they cost you.

2. You are constantly thinking about what they owe you.

3. Matthew 5:23-24 – Your giving will not be effective until

you get your relationships right.

4. God places a priority on relationships above money and so

should we who are made in His image.

5. I Corinthians 6:1-8 – In some cases it is better to take a

financial loss to salvage the relationship than to lose a
relationship by taking a brother or sister to court.

a. We must be willing to let these things go and forgive

everyone!

46 REV 12.10.2018
Prosperity God’s Way
Greg Mohr Lesson 8

b. Life is too short and unforgiveness and bitterness

too costly emotionally, spiritually, and physically to
hold on to it.

IV. Bible Examples of Relationships versus the Love of Money

A. Abram and Lot – Genesis 13

1. Genesis 13:8 – “So Abram said to Lot, ‘Please let there be

no strife between you and me…for we are brethren.’”

2. Abram gave up the best land for the sake of the

relationship.

3. Abram chose his relationship with Lot over material gain.

4. Genesis 13:12-13 – Lot chose material gain over his

relationship with Abram.

5. This choice led him to pitch his tent toward Sodom (evil)
and eventually cost him everything.

6. The love of money or material gain over relationships is a

root of all kinds of evil.

7. Genesis 13:14-18 – God rewarded Abram’s decision to

choose relationships over financial gain with His presence,
a vision, promised legacy and inheritance.

B. The Father, prodigal, and elder brother – Luke 15:11-32

1. The younger brother thought money could do more for him

than his relationships.

2. He discovered the hard way that was a lie.

3. He found that relationships built around the love of money

were not real or lasting.

47 REV 12.10.2018

a. As soon as his money was gone, so were they!

4. The elder brother’s focus on money kept him from

developing a close relationship with either his father or his
brother.

5. Everything he was doing and working for was for himself.

6. His focus was on how the younger brother wasted his

father’s money, not on his relationship with his brother or
on the welfare of his brother.

7. The Father’s focus: relationship – “my son is restored”,

“Son, you are always with me”.
