MARKET OVERVIEW

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE MARKET

◼ Countries worldwide are facing the huge threat of COVID–19, the WHO has declared COVID-19 as a pandemic and has released multiple guidelines on the management of patients.

◼ There is no treatment available against this highly infectious disease, and most of the pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies are focusing their R&D departments in identifying
new molecules or leads for the treatment of this disease.

◼ According to Johns Hopkins University, as of 10th June 2020, there have been more than 7,459,741 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 419,041 deaths around the world.

◼ According to the WHO, the number of secondary infections generated from one infected person is between 2 to 2.5 for COVID-19. Therefore, on an average, one person transmits to
two other persons, leading to an exponential increase in the number of affected cases.

◼ Due to the high transmission rate and lack of treatment for the same, many countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Mexico, have suffered an unprecedented burden on both
the country’s economy and their healthcare system.

◼ The contagious coronavirus is having a potential economic impact and implications on most of the sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry. Governments all over the world are
now responding to the threat of COVID-19 with all the essential measures, such as social distancing, nationwide lockdown, travel restrictions, and large-scale quarantines that are
anticipated to negatively impact the businesses and consumer spending.

◼ Many countries have been in lockdown and have suspended the trades with other countries leading to declining in market capitalizations of major companies across the world, along
with a decline in industrial production, sales of automobiles, and other businesses.

◼ The lockdown measures across the world have resulted in decreased public mobility. As a result, the number of visits to the hospitals and clinics for dental purposes have decreased
leading to a decline in the demand for dental consumables. Dental companies across the world are showing a significant dips in income, contrary to growth rates delivered in the past
decade. They are taking significant measures to cope with the adverse financial impacts.

◼ Many countries are in lockdown and have suspended trade with other countries and implemented travel restrictions, which has led to the decline in dental services. Recent research
studies suggest that even the dental emergency services have been seen to decrease. One of the major reasons is the high risk of cross-infections, which has led to a collective fear
among the people, which have influenced the dental services.

MARKET OVERVIEW

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE MARKET

◼ A huge gap have been observed in the demand and supply of the dental products like dental cements, and the companies have been trying to retain their sales and
customers. For instance, Straumann is utilizing the lockdown to gain new customers and train existing ones through its online educational platform, the Straumann Campus.
This has helped the company to gain 20,000 additional customer leads.
◼ Straumann announced that it will shrink its global workforce by 9% this year, in order to align its costs with reduced revenues and the onset of an economic recession.
Although the group’s organic revenue decreased by 1%, the pandemic significantly disrupted the company's organic revenue growth, which was 16% in second half of 2019.
◼ Moreover, Dentsply Sirona reported that its net sales for the first quarter were down by 7.6%, or 4.3% in organic terms. Sales of dental consumables took the greatest hit in
Dentsply’s portfolio and first quarter sales of consumables were down by 16.8%. Lower patient volumes and elective procedures resulted in decline of the sales of
consumables used in the preventive and endodontic categories. Moreover, these companies are also expected to face a disrupt in the supply schedule and backorders on
many of the products.
◼ The developing regions have seen a major impact in India, government has issued guidelines to close all the dental clinics in the Red Zone (where the number of cases is very
high). Additionally, all the routine procedures and check-ups associated with oral examinations have been postponed. The first quarter revenue of Straumann was also
majorly hit by the revenues from Asia-Pacific and LATAM countries. Their revenue fell by 25.5% in the Asia Pacific region and by 12.0% in Latin America.
◼ Many other countries have issued a protocol with respect to the screening and treatment of patients which is likely to decrease the number of patient visits to the dental
clinics. One such example being, the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) developing a screening protocol wherein the initial screening may not require the person to
visit the clinic.
◼ Additionally, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), has issued a strict guidelines to the dentists that dental clinics would treat only emergency cases but
suspend all nonessential and elective dental services. As a result the treatments are being delayed with minimal visits from patients are seen. Hence, the demand of dental
products may seem to be less in these countries.
◼ Hence, a slight negative impact can be seen on the dental products and services, which, in turn, is expected to decrease the demand of dental implants due to this outbreak
of COVID-19 for the short term.

MARKET DYNAMICS

MARKET OVERVIEW
 The growing awareness among people related to aesthetic dentistry is expected to augment the number of dental
procedures. This factor, in turn, is expected to fuel the growth of the market. Additionally, the growing burden of
dental problems, such as loss of tooth, misalignment of teeth, etc., is expected to boost the demand for dental
consumables such as cements.

 The investments in the cosmetic dentistry are expected to augment the number of the dental procedures and dental
cement. The major targets of the cosmetic procedures are the women patients as most of the countries are
witnessing increased number of women opting for cosmetic dental procedures. This has led to an increasing number
of procedures related to dental implants. This factor, in turn, augmented the usage of dental cements.

 The increasing prevalence of dental caries, especially among children and older population, is expected to influence
the demand for dental cement positively. Dental caries is a condition wherein the teeth breaks down, due to acids
and bacteria. The changing lifestyle, such as an unhealthy diet, particularly the ones rich in sugars, tobacco, and
alcohol, as well as poor oral hygiene among the people give rise to the dental problems.

 Furthermore, the increasing geriatric population and the associated issues of oral health are expected to create a
healthy demand for dental cements. Some of the common dental problems faced by people aged 65 years and
above are periodontitis, root caries, coronal caries, and others. According to World Health Organization, the geriatric
population is growing at the rate of 2.5%. According to the American Dental Association, the older adults are
expected to contribute largely to the dental procedures and surgeries.

 However, the expensive treatments of dental procedures and very minimal insurance coverage are the factors that
are expected to obstruct the growth. In addition, the excessive cementing in dental implants can lead to the failure of
implants causing adverse effect. This factor is expected to add up to the cost, making the treatments more expensive.

MARKET DYNAMICS

MARKET DRIVERS
GROWING BURDEN OF GAPS BETWEEN TEETH, MISALIGNMENT OF TEETH, LOSS OF TOOTH, ETC.
◼ One of the major factors responsible for the growth of market studied is the increasing burden of teeth discoloration, gaps between teeth, misalignment of teeth, etc.
◼ The increasing popularity and awareness among the population about dental aesthetics can lead to the increasing demand for these cements. A survey by the American Academy of
Cosmetic Dentistry suggested that about 99.7% of the American adults believe that a pleasant smile is important aspect in personal life. Therefore, many of the Americans are preferring
the cosmetic dentistry procedure. This factor is expected to augment the growth of the market.
◼ Women constitute the major portion of the population undergoing cosmetic dentistry. Owing to this group, the revenue of the cosmetic dentistry segment is increasing. Thus, the
increasing investment in cosmetic industry is expected to augment the usage of dental cements.
◼ Furthermore, the increasing number of cases of tooth loss is also expected to boost the demand of bone cement. Tooth loss is a very common problem and people suffering from it are
adopting dental implants for the replacement of missing tooth.
◼ According to American Academy of Implant Dentistry, around 500,000 dental implants are carried out in the United States annually. Dental cement plays a very crucial role in the
procedure of dental implants. It works as a luting agent and helps in fixing the crowns on the abutments.
◼ Furthermore, the unique properties of bone cement also gained popularity in this aspect. According to a recent report “ Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research”, published in
2019, the self-adhesive resin and resin-modified glass ionomer cement showed better mechanical strengths for supporting the implants. Hence, it is expected that the usage of these
material might increase in the procedures of restoration of tooth.
◼ In addition, the gaps between teeth are the common problems among people and cements are used for filling the gaps in between the teeth. According to the American College of
Prosthodontists (ACP), 2019, about 178 million people in the United States have missing tooth. It is often considered to be unpleasant and unaesthetic by people. Hence, the demand for
filling the gaps in teeth is expected to increase.
◼ In addition, dental cements acts as an important tool during prosthetic treatment. These cements are designed in a way that helps in the restoration of natural teeth of the patient, with a
metallic core.
◼ Thus, owing the increasing importance of bone cement in the restoration of teeth because of dental problems, such as misalignment of teeth, gaps between teeth, loss of tooth, etc., the
market studied is expected to witness a significant growth over the forecast period.

MARKET DYNAMICS

MARKET DRIVERS
INCREASE IN NUMBER OF CASES OF DENTAL CAVITIES
◼ Cavity is one of the most common dental problems among the population, primarily among children, teenagers, and older adults.

◼ According to the World Health Organization, in 2017, around 3.9 billion people globally suffered from oral disease and almost half of this population, i.e. around 44% of the total
affected population, is affected by dental caries. About 60-90% of the school-going children suffer from tooth decay, as per the same source. Furthermore, untreated tooth decay
has is one of the most prevailing oral condition in the primary teeth, globally.

◼ Dental decay results from plaque that forms on the surface of a tooth and converts the free sugars into acids that destroy the tooth over time. Cavities occur when foods
containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), such as cakes or candies, deposit on teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a
period, these acids destroy the enamel of teeth, resulting in tooth decay by forming dental cavities.

◼ A continued high intake of free sugars, inadequate exposure to fluoride, and inadequate removal of plaque, usually lead to caries, pain, and sometimes tooth loss and infection.
According to the World Health Organization, the daily intake of sugar by an individual should be less than or equal to 10% and the sugar intake of about 60 g per day (for an
individual) increases the risk of decay of tooth.

◼ As per the facts of FDI World Dental Federation, around 65 countries in the world consume twice the amount of sugar that was recommended by World Health Organization.

◼ In addition, according to the “World Ageing Population” report, in 2019, around 702.9 million population worldwide was aged 65 years and above. Older population is often at a
high risk of deteriorating oral health, such as tooth loss, dental caries, high prevalence rates of periodontal disease, xerostomia, and oral cancer. The increasing geriatric population
is also one of primary factors contributing to the increasing number of cases of dental cavity.

◼ Hence, due to the increase in the number of patients with dental cavities, composite resins and glass ionomer cements are being safely used for restoring teeth. Dental cements
are, therefore, used to fill the gaps between restorations and the natural tooth. They are crucial in the precise positioning of dental restorations. They protect the pulp from
discomfort and injuries. The aforementioned factors are expected to drive the dental cements market.

MARKET DYNAMICS

MARKET RESTRAINT
HIGH OPERATIONAL COSTS FOR DENTAL PROCEDURES
◼ The dental procedures/surgeries are one of the expensive treatments. Hence, this factor is expected to hinder the growth of the market studied.
◼ The treatment of oral issues is the fourth-most expensive treatment among all other treatments, as per the data of FDI World Dental Federation. According to a report by the
Public Broadcasting Service in 2017, about 100 million Americans do not go to the dentist, as they cannot afford it. Instead, they end up breaking the tooth or at times
people die of the immense pain. This signifies that the poor, people from minority communities, and others do not get proper dental care, due to the lack of insurance
coverage.
◼ Furthermore, most of the people do not have dental insurance. The negligence toward dental care is one of the major factors leading to inadequate dental insurance
coverage.
◼ It is reported that 50% of the Americans do not have dental insurance and around 77% have dental insurance. The developing nations in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the
world, where people are still living in poverty, do not have these types of insurance coverage as well. Hence, the poor, the people from minority communities, and others do
not receive dental care, due to lack of insurance coverage. This factor is expected to restrain the growth of the market. As per the data of Symbol of Statistics Canada, in 2018,
about 39.1% of the people in Canada did not visit dental professionals because of the high cost. Around 13.7% did not have any insurance coverage in 2018. In addition, due
to the outbreak of COVID-19, the insurances might tend to reject the claims.
◼ The number of Korean patients treated for periodontal disease reached 14 million in 2017, with the total cost of medical care exceeding KRW 1.1 trillion. In addition, 5.9
million people received medical care for dental caries, at a total cost of about KRW 590 billion (“The socioeconomic Impact of Korean Dental Health Insurance Policy on the
Elderly: A Nationwide Cohort Study in South Korea”, Hyewon Seo, et al.).
◼ According to the World Health Organization, in most of the developed countries, dental treatment costs about 5% of total expenditure on healthcare and around 20% of the
out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare.
◼ Hence, with the increasing cost of dental procedures, individuals delay their dental procedures. These factors, thereby, are expected to restrain the growth of the market
studied.

MARKET DYNAMICS

MARKET RESTRAINT
IMPLANT FAILURES CAUSED BY CEMENT
◼ Dental implants are one of the popular treatments often used in case of fixing the loss of tooth, generally caused by periodontal (gum) diseases. However, the excessive
cementing can lead to the failure of implants. The symptoms or side effects of these cements can be observed years later after implanting.

◼ The cements acts as a foreign body in our oral system and excessive use of it can lead to various problems, such as the development of bone lesions. These bone lesions
can result in severe bone loss and the loss of the fixture. Bone loss is almost the worst complication that can be suffered by the patients with dental implants.

◼ This can lead to improper fixture leading to the permanent damage of the teeth. Furthermore, the loss of an implant not only causes significant pain, but also negatively
affects the patients’ quality of life when he or she loses function of that implanted tooth. In addition, it can have major effects on the soft tissues of the gum.

◼ Restoration in the dental implants is fixed by cementing to the crown. However, the point of fixation can be difficult to remove. It not only causes adverse effects on the
oral health of the patients, but also adds up the expenditure.

◼ Moreover, cement-retained prosthesis is often difficult to extract and it is biologically weak. It can be due to the difficulty in the removal of excess cement. Thus, these
residues remain in the gingival collar of the cavity. This factor can pose a high threat in inducing soft-tissue inflammation in the implant gingival component. These failures
occurs because of varied reasons, such as the lack of retention and resistance strength, inadequate height, improper surface area, and tapers or number of walls.
◼ It depends upon the type of other materials used and its interaction with the cements. Thus, these factors can lead to the failure of retention of the prostheses. Therefore,
people are preferring to shift toward screw-retained prostheses over cement-retaining prostheses. Careful selection of the type of materials, storage, mixing, and
proportioning are of utmost importance and they can influence the cement-retaining prostheses. Additionally, many of the recent studies talked about the cases of late
implant failures.

◼ Thus, the aforementioned factors are expected to have a negative impact on the dental cement market during the forecast period.

POLYCARBOXYLATE
◼ Polycarboxylate cement is one of the few dental materials that demonstrate true adhesion to
DENTAL CEMENTS MARKET
tooth structure. The powder is primarily zinc oxide, and the liquid is polyacrylic acid or a Revenue in USD million, Polycarboxylate, Global, 2017-2025
copolymer of that acid.
◼ Although the final pH of the set cement is comparable to that of zinc phosphate cement, its 5.02%

biologic properties are excellent. They are not considered to be irritant to the pulp. Clinical
experience suggests that their higher solubility, compared to zinc phosphate, does not pose a
significant clinical problem. 176.48 173.36
167.18
◼ For these reasons, polycarboxylate cement is useful as a base or as a luting agent, particularly 158.46

when the cavity preparation is close to the pulp.

◼ In addition, as the cement sets against the tooth structure, a chemical bond is formed between
the cement liquid and the calcium in the hydroxyapatite in enamel and dentin.
◼ Adhesor Carbofine by Kerr Corporation is a Zinc Polycarboxylate Cement. This conventional self-
curing material is based on natural adhesion to hard dental tissues and is not irritating the pulp.
The material is suitable for the semi permanent cement (strong bond nevertheless easier
removing of the long-term temporaries) and definitive cement for crowns and shorter bridges.
◼ Moreover, many small domestic players have also been involved in manufacturing the product.
For instance, PYRAX Group, an Indian company, manufactures a range of dental consumables
and cements, with polycarboxylate cement being one of them. As a result, it can be inferred that 2017 2018 2019 2020 2025

◼ Many recent studies have shown that the percentage of children in many Asian countries, who have
dental caries, is increasing over time. These countries include Indonesia, the Philippines, and
Thailand. In Thailand, dental caries have shown an increase in prevalence during the past two
decades, helping in the market growth.
◼ However, all these countries also have a growing demand for dental consumables such as dental
cement. This is majorly due to the flourishing of the high dental-medical tourism industry, which is
expanding over time. These regions are a hub for low-cost dental procedures, and hence, patients
from Australia, the United States, and several European countries avail these facilities.
◼ Thailand has managed to be developed as a hub for medical tourism, including dental treatments. 2017 2018 2019 2020 2025

◼ The GCC comprises Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain.
◼ In the GCC region, oral care practice is expected to continue developing, with growing awareness among DENTAL CEMENT MARKET
consumers. With a percentage of compulsory health insurance also covering dental care, consumer’s Revenue in USD million, GCC, 2017-2025

◼ The advent of medical tourism in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) positively affects the region’s dental CAGR
cement market. In April 2016, the Dubai Government introduced the world’s first medical tourism portal,

1.2 million patients visited Dubai as medical tourists, in which the most sought-after services were dental
procedures.
◼ As per Dubai Health Authority (DHA) estimates, in 2018, around 46% of international medical tourists came
to Dubai for dental treatments, followed by orthopedics (18%) and dermatology (10%).
◼ The oral diseases commonly found in the region include the dental cavity, periodontal diseases, oral cancer,
and hereditary lesions. In Qatar, dental caries or cavities have taken the leading position, and thus, a
significant impact on an individual’s physical, social, and mental well‐being. Therefore, oral health trends,
offering directions to develop tailored initiatives, and improving oral health conditions have helped in the
treatment of diseases.
◼ In the global perspective, the prevalence of dental caries in Kuwait is high and there is no indication of a
decrease. The periodontal diseases are common, affecting the majority of the population out there.
◼ Hence, the oral health promotion needs to be strengthened, and a defined strategy should be implemented 2017 2018 2019 2020 2025
for the improvement of the quality of life of individuals living there.
◼ Therefore, the market for dental cement is expected to grow over the forecast period.

at some point in their life.
◼ The South African government is expected to step up its campaigns in September each year. With this
campaign, September is designated as the National Oral Health Month.
◼ As South Africa’s infrastructure and medical technology is advanced compared to that of other African
countries, there are several tourists coming from near African countries for medical tourism, including
dental. This is contributing to the growth of the market studied.
◼ However, the country is still in the developing phase and lacks the advanced facilities that are present in
the developed countries. The increasing prevalence of oral diseases and the lack of success in the
management of the problem, thus, demand alternative strategies for addressing oral health issues.
◼ Thus, the South African dental cement market is expected to witness steady growth over the forecast

dental cement market growth, over the forecast period.
◼ In Iran, dental caries and periodontal disease have been considered as the most important oral health

Therefore, the high prevalence requires the dental surgeries and hence, helps in the growth of market
studied.
◼ The National Health Insurance Law (NHIL) which was implemented since 2010, has helped to improve the
oral health of children in Israel. The clinics in Israel are constantly updating their equipment to keep up with
progress and work even better, which allows for the better treatment.
◼ In Egypt, the incidence of dental caries is high among school children and therefore, there is a need for oral
programs carried out by the government targeting both the children and parents through different public
media approaches. These programs should focus on the optimal teeth brushing and the healthy nutritional
habits specialized for children and for their better oral health. It is expected that the market will be

 According to a study “System dynamics modeling for tooth decay treatment in Brazilian children” published 5.10%
CAGR 63.75
in Feb 2020, has reported that the dental caries is found to remain one of the most common chronic
diseases that affects mainly low-income children and still considered the main cause of tooth loss in

oral problems that helps in driving the dental cements market over the forecasted period.
 The Brazilian market still has potential for dental care, with many global players bringing successful
products from their international portfolios into the country, to provide local consumers with a wider
choice. Teeth whitening is a local trend that gained relevance in recent years.
 In Brazil, the advent of multi-clinic dental networks impacts the growing demand for increasingly
sophisticated dental solutions, customized/fabricated to a more exacting specification in the country.
Economic recovery, dynamic consumer behavior, the company’s promotional activities, and the presence of
various international brands have boosted the Brazilian dental cement market.
 Brazil is increasingly found becoming a favorable location for medical tourism. It has seen the number of
foreign patients rise at a 30% clip year-over-year and is poised to draw more from its neighbors and the
United States, owing to shorter flights and football-related accidents. However, with the recent COVID-19 2017 2018 2019 2020 2025

◼ In Argentina, there are an increasing number of cavities/tooth decay problems found facing by the children.
Cavities, also referred to as tooth decay, or dental caries, are the breakdown of the hard tissues of the tooth.
Therefore over the last several decades, dental researchers have made tremendous progress in the dental
cements market growth that helps in driving the overall market growth.
◼ The Argentine medical tourism is also experiencing positive trends in dentistry. Dental implant treatment in
the United States costs USD 4,000, whereas the same treatment can cost as little as USD 750 in Argentina.
Therefore due to the low cost, the medical tourists are preferring the dental treatment services as well.
◼ In addition, according to the Argentine Chamber of Medical Tourism, medical tourism in Argentina is
growing. In 2016, Argentina welcomed 14,000 foreign medical tourists who spent 300 million dollars on
medical services and tourist activities.
◼ However, with the recent COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in fewer medical tourists to the country, resulting 2017 2018 2019 2020 2025

one of the countries with a high prevalence of untreated ECC in South America. Therefore with the increase
in awareness among the individuals the market is expected to boost in the coming years.

augment the dental cement market, during the forecast period.

 The use of materials in the restoration of tooth and its structures is constantly developing. Over the past decade, newer material processing techniques and technologies have significantly
improved the dependability and predictability of dental materials, for clinicians. However, the selection of the combination of these materials still remains to be a challenge. These
materials have been advanced with respect to properties, such as chemistry, bonding capability, reduced operator time, and/or technique sensitivity.

 For instance, fluoride-based materials were used for developing cements and were introduced in dentistry. They were found to be quite effective because of their anti-carcinogenic
properties and they did not impact the retention property of the original material of the cement.

 Dental cement has a wide range of applications in the dentistry; therefore, it has been considered as the cornerstone of all advances in oral and dental medicine. For instance, use of
nanotechnology has been observed to improved the quality of many of the dental biomaterials. Nanomaterials have numerous advantages like superior properties as hardness, flexural
strength, modulus of elasticity, translucency, durability in comparison to traditional materials.

 There are many clinical studies regarding the usage of nano-particles in dental cements, to evaluate their safety and efficacy. For instance, nano-silver particles are being used in the
development of cement materials, as silver is proven to be effective against bacteria.

 The access to dental care is increasing in the emerging market, as the number of clinics and dental professionals is increasing in emerging nations. Dental tourism in the emerging markets
involves quality service at a much cheaper rate than developed nations. India, China, Mexico, Brazil, Austria, and others are few of the dental tourism locations, across the world. Dental
service providers are shifting from clinical service providers to one-stop shop for the all the services that they can offer. The increasing awareness about oral health and expanding dental
tourism in emerging markets are expected to drive the global dental consumables market, during the forecast period.

 Therefore, the use of newer technologies and methods in dental cements and the increasing accessibility to dental services in the developing countries are expected to lead to a wider
scope for dental cements.
