Level 2 English

Speaking, Listening and Communicating

What do I need to do?

You will need to prepare for the following 3 activities:

➢ An informal discussion on an unfamiliar topic; 10-15 minutes

➢ A formal presentation/extended explanation on a familiar topic; 5-7 minutes

➢ A discussion in response to another person’s presentation or extended explanation, or a

recorded presentation; 5-7 minutes

Informal discussion on an unfamiliar topic

You will partake in a discussion with at least 2 people about a specific topic to reach a decision
and/or exchange ideas.

You will be expected to ‘listen and respond’ and ‘speak to communicate’.

You will need to ensure you are prepared to take on various roles such as

❑ lead
❑ redirect
❑ question
❑ answer
❑ focus
❑ interject
❑ express opinion
❑ challenge

You cannot just state your opinion.

As a group, you should engage in discussion to establish a shared understanding about the topic,
communicating your own point of view, listening and responding to others.

The discussion topics are

October – December Are food banks really necessary in 2019?

January – March Is climate change fantasy or a fact?

April - June Should cyclists be made to take a test and hold valid insurance to ensure they are
roadworthy?

July – September Should a country impose a limit on the number of children a family can have?

October – December Is veganism a lifestyle choice or a threat to the environment?

You should be prepared to answer questions that may be asked by others.

You can use power point, flip chart, prompts, cards, etc.

Discussion in response to another person’s presentation or extended explanation, or a recorded

presentation

You will watch a presentation given by another and then be expected to ask questions around this
presentation.

SCS1 Identify relevant information from extended explanations or presentations

assessment you will be sent to a ‘Speaking and Listening Workshop’ to be assessed by an
independent assessor.

Please speak to your Skills Coach for further support.
