Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys would always occupy the same spot on the table every time. It was as if he could see invisible lines drawn specifically for these things, not a centimetre more or less. Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, okay?” I was more than happy to do it. At age five, this mundane task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet. About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to ~ just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and Id already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him. 6 Today, I’m no longer a kid. Now 28, I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted. Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said: “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb? It’s been a while since I last cleaned it.” I looked at him a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink, It’s a new comb. This one’s brown. I hadn’t noticed that he’d changed it. He used to have the green one, then a pink one that he gave to me as a present but took back when his green one broke. I punched a few drops of soap from the dispenser onto an old toothbrush, and I brushed the comb. It hit me then: why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy. That routine meant that my dad was home early to spend the evening with Mum and I. It meant he would watch TV with us or play a few video games with me. It meant a happy and loving family. I passed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled, But this time, I noticed something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still as heart-warming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still organises his personal items in the same meticulous way. I guess some things never change. And for that, I'm glad. Source: Reader s Digest Australia. (2019, June 27). 19 In paragraph 1, the phrase as if he could see invisible lines drawn specifically for these things could mean that the father was A. negligent. B_ She promised to be a good daughter to her father. C__ She was exhausted when cleaning the comb. At their best, they can be useful tools for staying in touch, finding out new information and coordinating social activities. At worst, they can negatively affect concentration, communication and sleep. 27 These potential negative consequences are especially important to consider for teenagers. 8 A study on the science of distraction found that each time an office worker was distracted by a text message or email, it took them up to an average of 25 minutes to refocus on the original task at hand. That’s what makes students doing their homework with their mobile phone nearby so problematic. 28 In truth, it takes up a lot of time, energy, effort and focus to switch between two tasks. The fear of missing out (Fomo) is very common in teenagers. It is characterised by the need to know what everyone is doing and worrying that they are having more fun than you. 29 These students are more likely to experience lower overall quality in their mood, have increased anxiety, and are more likely to check their phones and social media during lessons or study time. Using your mobile phone too much in the evening can lead to going to bed later, getting less overall sleep, and lower quality sleep. 30 However, the bright backlight on a mobile phone can trick your brain into thinking it’s still day, suppressing the release of melatonin. This means being on your phone late at night still keeps your brain awake and alert at the exact time you want to be feeling relaxed and sleepy. Procrastination is extremely common in students. 31 Mobile phones might not turn students into procrastinators, but they can certainly act as a vehicle for their procrastination. Being over-reliant on a mobile phone can be bad for a person’s psychological health. 32 A study on young people and mobile phones found that 60% reported that they felt very agitated when they could not access their phone. Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow. A- MIRA, 14 years old I think for me the most difficult part is speaking. I feel very shy when I speak English in my class. I rarely speak, I just listen because I am very shy. B-WEI FENG, 16 years old - We don’t have much time for speaking because the class is usually very crowded so students don’t have much chance to speak English with each other. We have many other things to learn like writing and reading but normally reading consumes and requires more time than speaking so there is less time for speaking. C - GAYATRY, 16 years old Iam afraid of making grammar mistakes in speaking. When I make a mistake, I try to correct it, to make my speaking better. Sometimes when I say wrong words or wrong sentences I don’t realise till after. If that’s what I have said, I cannot take it back, but I try to correct the mistakes later because I know I was wrong. D-SUSAN, 15 years old English is difficult because we often do not say a word the same way it is spelled, for example the present tense and past tense of ‘read’ is pronounced differently even though it is spelled the same. There are numerous words like this that can be confusing to me. E-HELML, 15 years old I think I have problems with listening, and I can’t speak fluently because I don’t communicate with other people much and had little chance to talk to people in English. There is also a lot of slang words that are used when English is spoken in less formal contexts which is sometimes confusing. F— KIMI, 14 years old In practising English, the most difficult is grammar. But if we know the rules of grammar, I think it is very easy to talk a lot in English. But essay writing is more difficult, and for writing we have to learn more grammar. Questions 33 to 36 Which paragraph (A - F) describes the following challenges of learning English? Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet. Statements Paragraph 33. Grammar hinders my ability to speak fluently, sessesanecane 34. The pronunciation of certain words is baffling. 35 Higher number of students minimises the opportunity to speak. 36 The peculiarity of the spoken language makes it even more ssesssesee confusing.
