DLP in 1stquarter Module 3

The document provides a lesson plan on minerals for senior high school students. The objectives are for students to be able to identify examples of minerals, appreciate their different characteristics, differentiate minerals based on their properties, and understand the importance of minerals. The lesson plan outlines preliminary activities, a review, motivation with a minerals video, a discussion of mineral characteristics and properties with 10 examples, and a grouping activity where students present on mineral topics. Students are evaluated through answering questions about mineral examples and importance. The assignment is advance research on rocks.

Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in Physical Science for SHS

I-Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be

able to;

a. identify the examples of minerals;

b. appreciate the different characteristics of
minerals;
c. differentiate minerals based on their
properties; and
d. develop awareness on the importance of
minerals around us.

II- Subject Matter

Topic: MINERALS
Reference: Earth and Science Module

III-Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
a.1. Prayer
a.2. Greetings
a.3. Checking of Attendance

B. Review

C. Motivation
- The teacher will then show short video
about Answer may Vary
- minerals

About minerals
Very Good!!!
A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic
element or compound having an orderly internal
structure and characteristic chemical
composition, crystal form, and physical
Answer may vary
properties.

Example of minerals include:

1. Diamond- diamond, a mineral composed of pure
carbon. It is the hardest naturally occurring
substance known; it is also the most popular
gemstone. Because of their extreme hardness,
diamonds have a number of important industrial
applications. And it has a hardness of 10 in Mohs
scale.
2. Corundum- Also known as: crystalline aluminum Answer may vary
oxide It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs
scale, making it one of the most durable
commercial gemstones.

Example of corundum is ruby and sapphire

3. Topaz- topaz is a crystalline mineral in the silicate

group with a hardness of 8 and a variety of colors,
topaz is a great choice for jewelry in any style and
can even make for a unique center stone in an
engagement ring.
4. Quartz- Quartz is a hard, crystalline
mineral composed of silica (silicon dioxide).
With a hardness of 7 in Mohs scale.
Answer may Vary
5. Orthoclase- or orthoclase feldspar is an
important tectosilicate mineral which forms
igneous rock. The name is from the Ancient
Greek for "straight fracture", because its
two cleavage planes are at right angles to
each other. It is a type of potassium
feldspar, also known as K-feldspar. With a
hardness of 6 in Mohs scale. Answer may Vary
6. Apatite- is a rock phosphate mineral.
Apatite can exist in many different forms,
along with other minerals, as long as the
base of apatite calcium (Ca5) and
phosphorous (PO4) exist together. With a
hardness of 5 in Mohs scale.
7. Fluorite- (also called fluorspar) is the
mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It
belongs to the halide minerals. With a
hardness of 4 in Mohs scale.
8. Calcite- Calcite is a carbonate mineral and
the most stable polymorph of calcium
carbonate (CaCO3). It is a very common
mineral, particularly as a component of
limestone. Calcite defines hardness 3 on
the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, based
on scratch hardness comparison
9. Gypsum- Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral
composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate,
with the chemical formula CaSO. 4· 2H2O. It
is widely mined and is used as a fertilizer
and as the main constituent in many forms
of plaster, drywall and blackboard or
sidewalk chalk. With a hardness of 2 in
Mohs scale.
10. Talc- Talc is a naturally occurring
mineral, mined from the earth, composed of
magnesium, silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen.
Chemically, talc is a hydrous magnesium
silicate with a chemical formula of
Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. Talc has many uses in
cosmetics and other personal care
products. With a hardness of 1 in Mohs
scale.

(The teacher well then continue discussing the

characteristics of minerals, different
characteristic based on properties and the
importance of mineral around as)

E. Generalization

1. What is mineral? Answer may Vary

2. What is the importance of mineral Answer may Vary
around us?
3. Give at least three examples of
minerals?

F. Application
This time we will have a reporting
activity but before that I will divide the class into
three group each group will given by a topic then
after 10minutes you will choose a presenter and
present Infront.

Group 1- Character of minerals

Group 2- differentiate minerals based on their

properties
Group 3- the importance of minerals around us

IV- Evaluation
Directions: In a ½ sheet of paper answer
the following questions.
1. Enumerate the example of minerals
in any order.
2. Explain the importance of minerals
around us. 5pts.
V- Assignment

Have advance research about ocks.
