INTRODUCTION

Welcome to ENG 157!

This course aims to equip you with skills in conceptualizing, writing, and presenting
effective business documents. You will learn about the different kinds of documents
written and circulated in the workplace and the styles and principles used to create
them.

You will not only practice writing but also learn to think critically about the forms of
business communication.

If you are already working, this course can serve to refresh and augment what you
already know. If you are a full-time student, it is hoped that this course will capacitate
you with the relevant knowledge and skills necessary for producing effective outputs
for the workplace.

This course offers six modules containing lessons/discussions that aim to train you (or
enhance what you already know).

Each lesson has a set of readings and other learning materials for you to better
understand the topics. Take note of the (self) study questions per lesson to help you
digest the readings. Some modules will provide learning activities that are not
necessarily graded but are expected to enrich your insights gained and appreciation
of the discussions. You are strongly encouraged to participate and bond intellectually
with your classmates in the Discussion Forum.

Finally, graded Summative Activities (SA) will cap your learning experience.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Explain the use of oral and written English in different professions;

 Contrary ideas can enrich the discussion—as long you express them
tactfully and receive them with an open mind to broaden and deepen your
perspective.
 The nuances of what we “say” can be easily lost when they become just
words on the screen. Please review your words and phrasing before posting
to avoid any misunderstanding.
 Be concise. Avoid wordiness.
 Always cite your references.
