Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi

Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi (1564-1624) was an Islamic scholar and reformist in India who started the first Islamic reform movement. Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi: (1564 to 1624):

1. Also known as “Mujdeijadid Ali Saani/Thaani”.


2. He was born on “26th June 1564” (during Akber empire tenure).
3. Died in “10th December 1624” (during Jahangir tenure).
4. He studied Hadith, Tafseer, and Philosphy.
5. He was Islamic scholar and reformist (started first reform movement).
6. “Main purpose of this movement”, was to protect the identity of Muslims in sub-
continent.

i. Main Purpose of Reform Movement:

 The main purpose of this movement is to protect the identity of Muslims in the
subcontinent.

 Actually, when Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi was born that time Jahangir and Akber
both had involved in wrong practices.

 They established Deen-e-Illahi, thereby Muslims had far away from Deen-e-
Islam.

 Hence(lihaza) Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi started the first reform movement to


protect the Muslims identity.

ii. Situation of Sub-continent During his Time:

 People were engaged in non-Islamic activities.The education of Quraan and


Sunnah was probihited that time, Muslims followed Deen-e-Illai, if Muslims
wanted to learn Quraan and Sunnah, Therefrom political system was against
because therefrom(us waqt se) Quraan and Sunnah was banned.

 The widespreadly believed in the miracle of Saints, that misguided people,


thereby (jiski wajha se) Muslims closed to Deen-e-Illahi and far away from
Quraan and Sunnat.

 Practices against Sunnah was common (Basically when you would not follow
the Deen-e-Islaam, then your practices would not according to the Sunnah, like
prostration to Akber and they were engaged more practices like that

 Akber established a separate din called Deen-e-Illahi. He said people to call


him Zille-Illahi, prostration in front of him, and did not follow Quraan and
Sunnah.
 Jurists were not taking guidance from the Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) life or
Quraan, because Akber did not allow the practice of Islam.

iii. Objectives of Mujjadid Ali Saani/Thaani:

1. Shiekh Ahmed Sirhindi wanted to improve Mughal political system.


“Islam is a natural poltical system in every time and space”
 He believed that Islam is a natural political system.Our caliphs have told us the
one way of political system and that is implemented in every time and space.
 Mujadid Ali sani believed if Muslims came on exaltation this is possible, when
the pollical system would be improved.
 Where rules are anti-Islamic so there follow Islamic prefaces goes difficult.

2. Protection of identity. He wanted to protect identity of Muslim, being a Muslim, we


believe that Muslim(tabi protect kaa sakty hn tabi opar aa sakty ha).They never let
Quraan and sunnah, because Muslims were engaged wrong practices, thereby they far
away from Quraan and Sunaah and they started to get that type of education that which
includes in Shirk, due to wrong practices there is no difference between Muslims,
Hinduism and Sikhism.

3. Reforms in Sufism: He wanted to reforms in Sufism. To correct false practices of


Muslims engaged in anti-Islamic practices and start follow the “Deen of Allah”

iv. Letters to Mujadid ali Saani:


 He wrote 80 letters to emperor of that time Akber and Jahagir and criticized their
politicial system, also wanted to take help from Islamic jurists, how we can work for
Muslims Betterment, he worried because Muslims were loosing their identity, Over-
there “Bakti Movement” was

 What is Bakti Movement? Religious devotees (Hindu, Sikh), they checked and
balanced on Muslims growth or Islamic Growth either Islam was not spreading in that
society or someone was doing the practices of Deen-Islaam common, the condition of
Muslims was inferiority in the sub-continent.

 At that he wrote a letter to Molana Farid Khan, and mentioned followed concern.

1. If its right to kill non-Muslims who are making conspiracies against Muslims?
2. Muslims were indulged in non-Muslims practices, was it right to kill them?
3. Islam was in danger as per some Muslims,, Hence, was it not right to kill them?

1. By these letters, Mujaddid Ali Saani was trying to make it clear Muslims did not correct
there practices. If they had weak Islamic base then they cannot develop a separate
identity of their own.
v. Concept of Wahdat-UL- Wajood:

2. Sufies basically misguided the people, they generated the concept of


wahadat-ul-wajood

1. No difference between Man/Creation and Creator.

2. Worship of creatures means worship of God, there is no difference b/w


it.

3. Every man has no capacity of reaches the level of sufism. Peoples


were misguided, and therefore, that happened

4. Peoples took that thing in sense prostration in front of


stones,persons,and handmade statue,they were engaged into anti-
islamic, and came into shirk to follow “wahadat-ul-wajood”

vi. Concept of Wahadat ul Shuhood:

1. To counter Wahadat-ul-wajood, Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi generated a concept


of wahadat-ul-shuhood.
2. Collected the people and told them about “wahadat-ul-shuhood”
3. That Man and God both are different entities, it can never be equal.If
someone would worship of God, if anybody worship of Peoples is a
shirk,there is no mean of it.
4. He Realized the peoples that did not follow anti-Islamic Faith and wrong
practicing.
5. Man can never become God.Worship of Creator and worship of Man both
are different things.

vii. Mujadid Ali Saani Efforts:

1. He guided muslims to practice true islam by giving teachings of prayer and foating and other
practices,although,it was banned overthere. And he started Jihaad on it, he started to give
teaching lecture to peoples, in the light of Quraan and Sunah.
2. He announced to oppose Deen-e-Illahi, he gave advised to the Muslims to far-away from
deen-e-illahi because it is a Shirk, and its nothing.
3. Wrote Letters to Mughual Emperior Jahagir, where he criticized /targeted his political and
administrative policies and reliazed them that you are making the laws, that is totally believes
on non-Islamic practices, due to your policies Muslims are not following their islam.
4. He Proposed a political to him, follow this political system, can basis on two Islamic state ..

i. Main-Point:
 Central authority (the man in power/ the leader of the society) should live and
rule on the basis on Islamic teaching, then we produced a better Islamic state.
 Constituency (a book in which you make a policies or laws through which you
treat your Ryot, based on Quraan and sunaah.

 Criticized word “Zillah-e-iaahi” which he used for himself, and tried to guided
him by an example of pious Caliphs. Suggested him to fear God.

 Mujaddid ali saani also criticized the liberal scholar whom he used to seek
guidance and suggested him to send them away.

 Criticised his treatury that it should be utilized for the betterment of muslim
only.

 Suggested him to practice islam and good attributes so that people can follow
islam.

ii. Imprisonment of Mujaddid alif saani:


 Jahagir called him in the shahi darbaar, and asked him to prostrate in front of me but
Mujaddid ali saani refused him and said without Allah I would never prostration to
anyone.he was kept away and imprisoned in the “fort of gwabor”

 Mujaddid ali saani did a lot of work in related to islam and he come in a good books of
many governors.

 Some jahagir Governor like Mahbat khan, the Governor of kurasam and turam against
the jahagir and attacked on Gwabor and defeated Jahagir, was arrested and released
Mujaddid ali sani.

 Mehbat khan asked Alif Saani to become the emperior of Indian but, he refused it.

 Alif saani said my goal is to service of islam not come into power and position.He also
ordered to release him that he was mislead by his own courtiers, he became follower of
Alif sani.

 After restoring of deen of allah and shariyah he was died(10 th December 1624) and
buried in sirhind
