1.What is the purpose of this text? Justify.

The purpose of the text "From Hand to Mouth" by Michael Corballis is to explain the evolution
and development of human language and communication, it focuses on how it relates to the
use of hand and gestures.
The text explores how does ability to use our gestures and manual actions played an important
role in the development of language, the author talks about how our ancestors used their
hands to do things and make signs which helped them communicate with each other. Then
over time, those gestures and signs became spoken words, which is how we talk today.

2. What is the tone? Justify.


It can be informative or analytical. When you're giving information, it should be clear and
supported with facts, also being analytical shows good reasoning. The author was presenting
the information and analyzing the topic in an objective manner, the author wasn't expressing
personal emotions or biases to the topic because evidences can be seen through his study.

Justify the following in the text:


a. FORMALITY
The text can be describe as moderately formal because it uses proper grammar and words, it is
also accessible to a general audience because it was friendly and easy to understand. I see no
abbreviations, colloquial nor idiomatic expressions.
b. OBJECTIVITY
It is objective. The author presents information without personal bias or emotion, as
mentioned above, the author was providing evidences.
c. EXPLICITNESS
The text was explicit as it states facts and concepts clearly. Every structure of the information
has precise language.
d. CAUTION
The text was cautious as it is careful in presenting its claims and conclusions. It considers
different perspectives when discussing the findings. It does not make sweeping generalizations
or unsupported statements.

3.Spoken languages, ones acquired may relay more accurate since spoken words are better
calibrated to minimize confusions .

GESTURES
(ADVANTAGES)
1.Gestures enhances the richness and texture of the messages.
2. Gestures can help mimic language by visually showing the shapes, sizes, and movements of
things all by themselves.

DISADVANTAGES
1.In order to understand a gesture, you need to pay attention and look at it closely.
2. Difficulties of sending confidential or classified information
3.Using gestures to wake a sleeping person is not as effective as using a loud sound to alert
them.
