Drilling Questions
Drilling Questions
A recommended bit program is prepared for a new well using bit performance records from
nearby wells. Drilling perforance records for three bits are shown for a thick limestone
formation at 9000ft. Determine which bit gives the lowest drilling cost if the operating cost of
the rig is $400/hr, the trip time is 7 hours, and connection time 1 minute per connection.
Assume that each of the bit was operated at near the minimum cost per foot attainable for that
bit.
SOLUTION.
The cost per foot drilled for each bit type can be computed using the following equation.
C b+C r (t d +t c+t t)
Cf¿
∆D
800+400 (14.8+0.1+7)
Cf = = $46.81/ft.

QUESTION TWO
While drilling at the dept of 13000ft there was a mechanical pipe stuck , in trying to pull out, the
drillstrilling got broken where the BHA becomes a fish. What are the possible causes of the pipe stuck?
QUESTION THREE
A 12-Ibm/gal saltwater mud is retorted and found to contain 6% of oil and 74% distilled water. If the
chloride test shows the mud to have a chloride content of 79,000mg CI -/L, what is the solids fraction of
the mud? Assume the mud is a sodium chloride mud.
SOLUTION
= 1.65× 79000
= 130,350mgNaCI/L.
From Table 2.5, a 130,350-mg NaCI/L solution of NaCI has the salinity of 12 percent . solution of NaCI
has a volume increase factor of 1.045.
Fs =1-fw Cf-fo
Fs=1-(0.74)(1.045)-0.06
Fs=0.167
QUESTION FOUR
A mud cup is placed under one cone of a hydrocyclone being used to process an un- weighted mud.
Thirty seconds were required to collect 1 qt of ejected slurry. The density of the slurry was determined
using a mud balance to be 17.4 lbm/gal. Compute the mass of sUsing the valuoes given in Table 2.7, the
average density of low-specific-gravity solids is 21.7 Ibm/gal
SOLUTION
ms+mw ρs Vs+ ρw Vw
Ρ= = = ρsfs + ρwfw
Vs +Vm Vs+Vm
Using the values given in Table 2.7, the average density of low-specific-gravity solids is 21.7 Ibm
and the density of water is 8.33 lbm/gal. Substituting these values in the above equation yields
Since the slurry is being ejected at a rate of 1 qt/30s, the mass rate of solid is
Note that to prevent the gradual loss of water from the mud, 9.65 gal of water must be added each hour
to make up for the water ejected by this single cone.
QUESTION FIVE
SOLUTION;
(a)
i. To protect the casing string from corrosive formation fluids and compounds.
iii. To prevent the movement of fluid through the annular space outside the casing
(b)
