Emphatic Expressions An emphatic expression is one that is said with emphasis and stress to indicate importance. This type of expression is used to show you have strong feelings about what you are saying. Often emphatic expressions that are written have an exclamation point (!) at the end of the sentence.
Emphatic Forms of the Verb The emphatic forms of the verb are often used to give greater emphasis to the idea expressed by the verb. The auxiliaries do, does, and did are used to give this additional emphasis. The emphatic forms are used in two tenses, the present and past tense. In the following questions, do, does, and did are not in an emphatic form: 1. Do you have to go now? 2. Doe he want to eat tonight? 3. Did she buy that hat last week? " In the second sentence, the speaker uses teh emphatic form does work as a way of contradcting the first speaker.
Emphatic Forms of the Verb Examples of present emphatic forms (DOES): Does he run fast? - He does run fast. She does look good in that dress. He does eat vegetables, doesn't he? She doesn't like cheese, does she? -But she does like cheese! In fact, she does love it!
