The document provides instructions for a performance task that requires identifying applications of circles, parabolas, and ellipses in the design of a roller coaster ride. Students must sketch and graph each conic section, providing the equation and properties. Draft designs are due on specified dates with the final submission due by September 11th and including scoring rubrics.
Your goal is to identify an application of a circle, parabola, and ellipse in a roller coaster ride by graphing a part of a roller coaster ride wherein you think the conic sections (circles, parabola, and ellipse) can be applied and identify its properties this includes the general and standard equation Instructions: A. Identify a part of a roller coaster ride where a circle, parabola, and ellipse can be applied. B. Sketch and design the part of the roller coaster where a circle, parabola, and ellipse can be applied. Be creative in designing each part that represents each conic section! C. Provide the equation of each conic section and identify its significant properties by showing the solution in determining its properties from the equation you provide. Be realistic in measurements! Output presentation: Write/Sketch your output on a graphing paper, one (1) graphing paper per conic section which means you are expected to submit 3 designs. Feel free to utilize online graphing tools or software to aid in the graphing process. Criterion: The output will be graded with the following criteria: Understanding of concepts, application creativity, mathematical precision and accuracy, practicality, and presentation. Important Note: This task is individual, you are expected to submit a draft of your design every after lesson. Submission of draft dates: August 10 & 11 – Circle draft August 25 & 29 – Parabola draft September 7 & 8 – Ellipse draft Final submission of output will be on or before September 11, 2023. Please compile your output and make sure to write your name and section on the upper right corner of each graphing paper. Attach a one (1) copy of the scoring rubric on top of your graphing papers.
