ANALYSIS

1. What are the skills that you can improve in using Microsoft Excel?
2. What are the advantages of using Microsoft Excel in office jobs?
3. What are the common functions used in Microsoft Excel?

ABSTRACTION
THE DEFAULT VIEW OF AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET

Microsoft excel provides an automated way of displaying any statistical data. It can be
used to automatically compute for several factors that are not easy to notice especially
when faced by a large data. Microsoft excel includes several arithmetic and basic
functions that help you compute faster.
Let us be familiar first with the default view of an excel spreadsheet.

1. The menu bar- It displays all of the menus available for use in excels. It contains
seven tabs: Home, Insert, Page Layout, Formulas, Data, Review and View.

2. Column Headings- Each Excel spreadsheet contains 256 columns. Each column is
named by a letter or combination of letters.

3. Row Headings- Each spreadsheet contains 65,536 rows. Each row is named
by a number.

4. Name Box and Formula Bar- The name box shows the address of the current
selection or active cell. The formula bar displays information entered or being
entered in the current or active cell.

5. Cell- It is an intersection of a column and row. Each cell has a unique cell address.
The heavy border around the selected cell is called the cell pointer.

COMMONLY USED MICROSOFT EXCEL FUNCTIONS

Microsoft excel performs calculations, what you have to do is to type the formula and
excel will do the others. Here are the basic formula in Microsoft excel.

 Basic Mathematical Operation Functions:

Addition (+) Multiplication (*)
Subtraction (-) Division (/)
On the formula bar, type = then the cells
you want to compute and the operation
you want to use.
Example: =a1+a2 then hit the enter key.
The operations above can be performed
as shown in the example for addition, just
replace the symbol to what you want to
use.

 Advance Excel Functions:

AVERAGE- a function used to compute for
the average of the number of a range.
Example: The average grade of the 8
subject must be computed
and shown in cell B10. In cell
B10, type = AVERAGE (Range)
Range is the cells address,
from-and-to separated by a
colon (:)

COUNTIF- a function used to count the cells
with a specified content within a
range.
=COUNTIF(B2:B9,C2)
Example: In the dataset on the right, the
teacher wants to know how
many students got score of 5. The
figure will be the criteria seen in
the dataset. Result must be
shown in cell D2. In cell D2, type
in =COUNTIF (Range,Criteria) and
hit enter.

SUMIF- a function used to compute for the summation of a range if a certain

condition met.
Example: The accountant wants to know how much sales did the company
gained in 2010 coming from a dataset on. He wants to see the amount
in cell E2. In cell E2, type in =SUMIF(Range1, Criteria,Range 2) and hit
enter. Range 1 is what we want to apply the criteria against and Range
2 is the ranged that maybe summed.

AVERAGEIF- a function used to compute for the average of the range if a certain
condition is met.
Example: The accountant wants to know the average sales of the company in
2010 coming from a dataset. He wants to see the data amount in cell
D2. In cell D2, type in =AVERAGEIF (Range1, Criteria,Range2) and hit
enter.

APPLICATION

Write the proper command/ formula to be used in the given situations below.
1. You want to get the sum of the numbers in cells A1, A2, A3, and A4. The result must be
shown in cell A5.
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. You want to get the product of the numbers in cells A1, B1, C1, D1 and E1. The result
must be shown in cell F1.
_____________________________________________________________________________
3. You want to get the quotient of the numbers in cells A1, B1, C1, D1, E1, F1 and G1. The
result must be shown in cell H1.
______________________________________________________________________________
4. You want to get the average of the grades in 8 subjects. The grades are place in cells
C2 to C9 and the result must be shown in cell C10.
_____________________________________________________________________________
5. You want to get the average number of teenage pregnancies in your community from
2011- 2020. The numbers are placed in cells B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B10, B11 and B12.
The result must be shown in cell B14.
