Aditya L1

Aditya L1 is India's first space-based solar observatory, launched in September 2023 to study the sun from the first Lagrange point (L1), located 1.5 million km from Earth. It will take Aditya L1 approximately 125 days to reach L1, where it will study the sun for 5 years using its seven scientific payloads focused on the sun's corona, chromosphere, and photosphere. Studying the sun helps provide early warnings of solar storms and coronal mass ejections that can impact Earth, and increases understanding of physics, climate change, and how the sun influences Earth's weather and satellite communications.

ADITYA L1

INTRO
ISRO's Aditya L1 was successfully launched from Satish Dhawan
Space Centre on 2 September, 2023
The launch was conducted using the PSLV-C57 rocket.
Aditya L1 is India’s first space based observatory and also ISRO’s
second astronomy observatory-class mission after Astro Sat
(2015).
Indian solar mission to study the Sun from a substantial distance
of 1.5 million kilometres. It will take approximately 125 days to
reach the L1 point and study sun for 5.2 years.
L1 POINT
Lagrange points are special positions in space where the
gravitational forces of two large orbiting bodies, such as the Sun
and the Earth, balance each other out.
This means that a small object, such as a spacecraft, can stay at
these points without using much fuel to maintain its orbit.
There are five Lagrange Points
Current L1 is home to NASA and ESA’s SOHO(Solar and Helio
spheric Observatory)
The James Webb Space Telescope orbits the Sun near L2.
LAYERS OF THE SUN
Sun has 7 layers in those 3 are inner layers and 4 are outer layers
Inner layers
1.Core(Where sun emits heat through hydrogen)
2.Radioactive zone(Takes light photons to surface of sun which
takes millions of years)
3.Convection zone(Here temperature is cooler compared to
previous layers which cools the photons and other gases to
surface
Outer Layers
1. Photosphere(Its is the layer visible through naked eye where
solar flares and sunspots forms) 6000c to 10000c
2. Chromosphere (Can only be seen in eclipse, it transfers the
heat from photosphere to outermost layer corona) 4000c to
8000c
3. Transition region
4. Corona (Where suns magnetic field is present and Cant be
seen with naked eye) can reach upto 2millioj degrees Celsius

PAYLOADS
7 PAYLOADS
1.Visible Emission Line Chronograph (VELC) take images of corona
layer and study the coronal mass ejections) Coronal Mass
Ejections (CMEs) are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field
from the Sun's corona.
2.Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT)Take images of chromo
and photosphere layers of sun and studies the UV rays emitted
from them.
3.Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS)
4.High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS) which
takes high energy x rays of sun

5.Aditya Solar wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX)

6.Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA) Will study the solar
energetic ions and winds effect on earth and L1 point
7.Advanced Tri-axial High Resolution Digital Magnetometers which
studies the magnetic fields at L1 point
OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of Aditya L1 is to get a better understanding
on suns behaviour, study the magnetic field, Solar winds, Solar
storms and CMEs on suns outer layer. Aditya L1 will primarily
focus o the 3 layers of Sun. Sun’s corona(6th layer),
chromosphere(5th layer) Sun's photosphere(4th layer)
WHY TO STUDY SUN AND SPACE?
Future of humans survival is largely based on space explorations
because we are living in universe which we have no idea what may
happen tomorrow. The CMEs on the Sun can cause highly
energetic particles and millions of tonnes of very hot, electrified
material to be expelled, sometimes on a collision course with
Earth can cause large destruction and disturbance. This material
also carries magnetic field from the Sun which is very important
when we are considering how the material will affect the Earth. If
this material manages to break its way into the Earth's normally
protective atmosphere (the magnetosphere) we can see many
effects on Earth. So early warning for such disasters may help in
taking corrective measures.
It helps us in advancing in physics by studying the suns magnetic
fields and heating mechanisms
Sun influence earths weather in different ways, Studying sun helps
in understanding the climate change on earth and also solar
storms on sun effects earth by blocking signal from satellites. So
knowing sun is very important.
